Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Revision of the Coleopterous Family Coccinellidae Having spent many happy hours with the lamented author in the examination of the beautiful forms of which this book treats, I have felt it a pleasant thing to be associated, even in so humble a capacity, with its introduction to the Entomological world; and the little service I have had the privilege of rendering in the revision of the proof-sheets of the latter half of the work, has been quite a labour of love - enabling mo to offer a slight testimony of affection to a kind friend, and of my personal interest in that family of the Coleoptera which had first attracted my attention by the singular loveliness of its numerous species. A careful revision by the author himself would have been of incalculable value to the work; its usefulness would also have been greatly enhanced, had it been possible for him to have made those modifications and additions which his investigations in America afforded materials for. But, of course, this was not possible. There is, however, the consolation of knowing that the student can obtain the results of those later researches, in the author's memoir, entitled "Revision of the Coccinellidae of the United States," to which Mr Janson refers in the note which follows this preface. Book Synopsis Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles (Coccinellidae) by : Ivo Hodek
Download or read book Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles (Coccinellidae) written by Ivo Hodek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ladybirds are probably the best known predators of aphids and coccids in the world, though this greatly underestimates the diversity of their biology. Maximising their impact on their prey is an important element in modern conservation biological control of indigenous natural enemies in contrast to the classical approach of releasing alien species. Ivo Hodek is one of the most internationally respected experts on coccinellids who has researched these insects for his entire career. He has now brought together 14 scientists of international standing to author 12 chapters, making this book the definitive treatment of coccinellid biology and ecology. This volume covers the rapid scientific developments of recent years in the understanding of coccinellid phylogeny, the semiochemicals influencing their behaviour and of molecular genetics. Recent insights in relation to intraguild predation and the assessment of the predatory impact of coccinellids are also covered. Other special features of the volume are the extensive references covering the literature from both East and West and a taxonomic glossary of the up-to-date nomenclature for species of coccinellids as well as of other organisms mentioned in the text. While aimed at researchers, university teachers and agricultural entomologists, the book is readable and appropriate for others who just have a liking for these interesting and attractive insects.
Download or read book Indian Insects written by S Ramani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most interesting and diverse group of organisms on earth, many of which are useful as pollinators of crops and wild plants while others are useful as natural enemies keeping pestiferous insects in check. It is important to conserve these insects for our survival and for this the diversity of insect species inhabiting the different ecosystems of our country must be known. The cornerstone to studies of any kind of organismal diversity is their taxonomic identity. Even after over two and half centuries of studies, so little is known of the insect wealth of our country. It has contributions from taxonomists who have been studying Indian insects for long, this book offers up to date information on many important groups of Indian insects seeking to fill the lacuna of a long felt need for a comprehensive work on the taxonomy of Indian insects. Salient features: Provides an up-to-date taxonomy of major insect groups of India Presents identification keys with illustrations of several important groups of Indian insects Gives a new insight into why insects are so abundant Addresses fundamental questions in mechanoreception and cross kingdom interactions using insects as model systems Indian Insects: Diversity and Science is a festschrift to Professor C. A. Viraktamath, an insect taxonomist par excellence. It has been designed to cater to the needs of academicians, researchers and students who wish to identify insects collected from local environments and will be an invaluable aid for those working in the areas of systematics, ecology, behaviour, diversity and the conservation of insects.
Download or read book Ladybirds written by Helen E. Roy and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of Ladybirds provides a succinct but comprehensive and accessible overview of the biology of ladybirds and their parasites, focusing on ecology in an evolutionary context. It provides the latest information, coverage of recent additions to the British list including the harlequin ladybird, and makes suggestions for further research, both short and long term, highlighting gaps in knowledge and showing readers how to get involved with recording and studying ladybirds. It includes updated keys for the identification of ladybirds at late-instar larval and adult stages, and techniques for studying ladybirds and their parasites in both laboratory and field. The authors hope that this book will be a valuable resource, not only for students, from school to university and beyond, but also for anyone with an interest in natural history, whether professional or recreational.

Download or read book The Ladybirds (Coccinellidae) of Britain and Ireland written by Helen E. Roy and published by Fsc Publications. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the Field Studies Council of behalf of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology's Biological Records Centre. Stunning full colour atlas providing information on the ladybird (Coccinellidae) family, comprising a diverse group of beetles. There are 47 species of Coccinellidae resident in Britain and Ireland. Some species are brightly coloured and these are colloquially termed ladybirds. Others are small and inconspicuous, although these, on closer inspection, are just as attractive as their charismatic counterparts. In this atlas, we describe the distribution of ladybirds in Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, using data collated through the Biological Records Centre Coccinellidae Recording Scheme (including the UK Ladybird Survey) since 1964. As well as distribution maps, the book uses terrific colour photographs and text to help with the identification of ladybird species in Britain and Ireland, from the largest to the smallest, and to provide information on life histories, behaviour, host plants and prey, and details of the enemies of ladybirds, especially their parasites.

Download or read book Born to Kvetch written by Michael Wex and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the main spoken language of the Jews for more than a thousand years, Yiddish has had plenty to lament, plenty to conceal. Its phrases, idioms, and expressions paint a comprehensive picture of the mind-set that enabled the Jews of Europe to survive a millennium of unrelenting persecution: they never stopped kvetching---about God, gentiles, children, food, and everything (and anything) else. They even learned how to smile through their kvetching and express satisfaction in the form of complaint. In Born to Kvetch, Michael Wex looks at the ingredients that went into this buffet of disenchantment and examines how they were mixed together to produce an almost limitless supply of striking idioms and withering curses (which get a chapter all to themselves). Born to Kvetch includes a wealth of material that's never appeared in English before. You'll find information on the Yiddish relationship to food, nature, divinity, and humanity. There's even a chapter about sex. This is no bobe mayse (cock-and-bull story) from a khokhem be-layle (idiot, literally a "sage at night" when no one's looking), but a serious yet fun and funny look at a language that both shaped and was shaped by those who spoke it. From tukhes to goy, meshugener to kvetch, Yiddish words have permeated and transformed English as well. Through the idioms, phrases, metaphors, and fascinating history of this kvetch-full tongue, Michael Wex gives us a moving and inspiring portrait of a people, and a language, in exile.
