Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phosphate Deposits of Florida: A Dissertation Lithologic character. - The Vicksburg group includes white \or light colored porous limestones, which are generally soft and crumble So easily that it is difficult to obtain good specimens. On exposure to the air, however, the surface of the limestone hardens as a result of the deposition of calcium carbonate in the outer pores of the rock. Samples obtained in drilling deep wells show that these rocks are remarkably uniform in color and texture to a depth of several hundred feet beneath the surface in the peninsula of Florida. However, the upper part of the limestones of the peninsula include a slight admix ture of land-derived sediments, such as clay and fine sand, and well records indicate that similar conditions exist in western Florida. Layers of light-blue or gray chert, ranging in thickness from a fraction of an inch to several feet, occur in the limestones of this group. Irregular masses and bowlders of flint are found at many places where the rocks belonging to this group are at the surface, and the shells embedded in this flint serve as a valuable guide to determine the areal extent of the rocks of Vicksburg age. Distribution - The limestones of the Vicksburg group underlie all of Florida, but except in small areas in the peninsula and in western Florida they are covered by younger beds of sand, clay, or limestone. In the peninsula the principal area in which these limestones lie at or near the surface extends from a point near Sutherland, Hillsboro County, and Dadc City, Pasco County, northward nearly to Fort White and Lake City Junction, Columbia County. The best expo sures are in Pasco, Sumter, Lake, Citrus, Hernando, Marion, Levy, Lafayette, Alachua, Suwannee, and Columbia counties. Near the margin of the area of the Vicksburg (see map, Pl. 1, in pocket) there are many more or less isolated exposures, the best known being the outliers in Taylor, Jefferson, Columbia, and Suwannee counties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preliminary Sketch of the Phosphates of Florida Development of the Industry. The existence of phosphate of lime within the State of Florida has been known for over a decade; but until the spring of 1887, the extent and value of its deposits, possibly with one exception, were unsuspected. In that year Col.T. S. Moorehead, induced by a statement made by Mr. J. F. Le Baron, examined the gravels of the Peace river, recognized the importance of the deposits-, acquired such tracts as were regarded as desirable, and established the pebble-phosphate industry, making his first shipment in May, 1888, to the Scott Manufacturing Company, of Atlanta, Ga. The establishment of the pebble-phosphate industry upon Peace river was followed, a year later, by the discovery in Marion county of an entirely different class of phosphate, now commonly known as hard-rock phosphate. This discovery was made early in June, 1889, by Mr. Albertus Voght, in a well which he was sinking upon his place near the site of the present town of Dunnellon, about 20 miles southwest of Ocala. To it, more than to any other cause, is due the rapid and remarkable development of the present great industry of the State. It was, however, Mr. John F. Dunn, of Ocala, who turned to advantage the accidental discovery of Mr. Voght. After acquiring a knowledge as to the chemical composition and value of the material, Mr. Dunn and his associates purchased several thousand acres of land and organized the Dunnellon Phosphate Company for active operations. From Dunnellon as a center, prospecting rapidly extended in all directions, until at the present day important mines have been opened over a well-defined tract more than 200 miles long and about 6 miles wide. This tract lies parallel to the Gulf coast, at an average distance from it of about 20 miles, and extends from the vicinity of Richland, in Pasco county, northward and westward nearly to the Apalachicola river. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida, South Carolina, and Canadian Phosphates: Giving a Complete Account of Their Occurrence, Methods and Cost of Production, Quantities Raised and Commercial Importance Although there is an abundance of literature upon the subject of the geological formation and chemical analysis of the various phosphates which have hitherto been discovered, yet it appears to me that the practical, though possibly sordid, side of the question has been rather neglected. Since, however, the phosphate mining industry is being carried on with the primary intention and hope of obtaining satisfactory returns from a pecuniary rather than a scientific point of view, I have ventured to give in the following pages an account, from a practical standpoint, of my personal investigations during the past few years in the phosphate fields of Florida, South Carolina and Canada. This book is therefore addressed to those who are commercially interested in phosphates, and should it be the means of giving them fuller information than they would be likely to gather elsewhere, then my efforts will be amply rewarded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century in Phosphates and Fertilizers: Sketch of the South Carolina Phosphate Industry The phosphate region of South Carolina lies along the coast, and practically parallel to the shore line, for a distance of abour seventy miles, extending from the Wando River, on the north, to Broad River, on the south, and at a distance of from ten to thirty miles from the ocean. North of this region occasional specimens have been reported in this State, notably in the neighborhood of Georgetown, but no deposit has ever been developed. The beds discovered still further north, in North Carolina, are of low grade and no com mercial importance. South of Broad River, with the exception of a few isolated specimens found in some of the Georgia coastal rivers, a similar condition of affairs prevails until the State of Florida is reached. Even here the deposits located on the eastern coast, unlike the valuable beds of the western and central portions of the State, have proven of no commercial value.
