Download or read book Paradoxes in Geology written by U. Briegel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interesting volume presenting the papers collected for the Festschrift "Paradoxes in Modern Geology" in honor of Professor Ken Jinghwa Hsu on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Paradox, as defined in a dictionary, is a statement contrary to accepted opinion. That a broad discussion of paradoxes is fruitful for the advancement of science in general, and geosciences in particular, has been amply demonstrated by Professor Hsu throughout his distinguished career. Not only has he propelled the geoscience community forward with his controversial statements, a number of his former students, who are currently in key positions at universities and in industry, are influencing in a similar open minded way the present day thinking. The wide scope this reasoning encompasses is demonstrated by the contributions to this book, delineating paradoxes and problems in the fields of tectonics, basic and applied geosciences, petrology, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and paleogeography, kinematics and modelling.

Book Synopsis Engineering Geology for Society and Territory - Volume 6 by : Giorgio Lollino
Download or read book Engineering Geology for Society and Territory - Volume 6 written by Giorgio Lollino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-30 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one out of 8 IAEG XII Congress volumes, and deals with the theme of applied geology, which is a critical theme for the global economy. In the international, multidisciplinary approach to major engineering projects (either to macro- or mega-scale), the application of geological investigation techniques is fundamental for properly selecting the location sites, planning the construction and maintaining the infrastructures. The contributions in this book include not only engineering constructions but also case studies related to large projects on geo-resources exploration and extraction (minerals, petroleum and groundwater), energy production (hydropower, geothermal, nuclear and others), transportation (railway and highway) and waste disposal as well as the environmental management of these and other activities. The Engineering Geology for Society and Territory volumes of the IAEG XII Congress held in Torino from September 15-19, 2014, analyze the dynamic role of engineering geology in our changing world and build on the four main themes of the congress: Environment, processes, issues, and approaches. The congress topics and subject areas of the 8 IAEG XII Congress volumes are: 1. Climate Change and Engineering Geology 2. Landslide Processes 3. River Basins, Reservoir Sedimentation and Water Resources 4. Marine and Coastal Processes 5. Urban Geology, Sustainable Planning and Landscape Exploitation 6. Applied Geology for Major Engineering Projects 7. Education, Professional Ethics and Public Recognition of Engineering Geology 8. Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

Download or read book Chi-Chi, Taiwan, Earthquake of September 21, 1999 written by Christopher Arnold and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is about the disastrous 7.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred near the village of Chi-Chi in central Taiwan on September 21, 1999. More than 2,400 people were killed and 11,000 injured. Tens of thousands of residential units were damaged or destroyed, leaving more than 100,000 people homeless. Massive landslides destroyed everything in their paths, and in some remote areas, thousands of people were isolated for days. Lifelines were severely damaged or disrupted, and highways, bridges, and other infrastructure components sustained heavy damage. Damage estimates, including lost productivity, range from $20 billion to $30 billion (U.S.). This 184-page volume covers the topics of strong-motion instrumentation and data, fault-related surface deformation, soil liquefaction, landslides, performance of structures, highway bridges, lifeline performance, and emergency response and recovery. The report is the result of a cooperative effort among many engineers, scientists, and organizations.
