Book Synopsis Taiwan's Economic Transformation by : Tai-Chun Kuo
Download or read book Taiwan's Economic Transformation written by Tai-Chun Kuo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of Taiwan’s economic revolution—how Taiwan transformed itself from a planned economy into a market economy between 1949 and 1965. The authors posit that it was the Kuomintang Government's endorsement of property rights reform and institutional change that enabled Taiwan to transform from an impoverished command economy to one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The book gives special attention to how a small group of political and economic leaders began adopting the new ideas and beliefs that created the vision that enabled them to embrace institutional and organizational innovations, actions which led to the formation of the new market economy. Using first-hand interview material with key government officials from the period, and analyses of hitherto unused Chinese-language archives including: the diaries of Chiang Kai-shek, Kuomintang party archives, and personal papers of Kuomintang leaders, as well as newspaper and journal articles published in Taiwan between 1949 and 1965, this book is both empirically rich, and gives the reader insights into Taiwan's developmental experience and the direction in which, under different circumstances, China's post-war expansion might have proceeded. Taiwan's Economic Transition will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the economic and political history and development of Taiwan. More broadly it will also appeal to scholars and students of China's historical and contemporary development, Asian economics, and Asian studies.
Book Synopsis Industrial Development for the 21st Century by : David O'Connor
Download or read book Industrial Development for the 21st Century written by David O'Connor and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With very few exceptions, industrial development has been central to the process of structural transformation which characterises economic development. Industrial Development for the 21st century examines the new challenges and opportunities arising from globalization, technological change and new international trade rules. The first part focuses on key sectors with potential for developing countries, focussing on two key themes. First, traditional points of entry for late industrializers - like textiles and clothing - have become even more intensely competitive than ever before, requiring more innovative adaptive strategies for success. Second, countries now recognize that manufacturing does not exhaust the opportunities for producing high value-added goods and services for international markets. Knowledge intensity is increasing across all spheres of economic activity, including agriculture and services, which can offer promising development paths for some developing countries. The final section addresses social and environmental aspects of industrial development. Labour-intensive, but not necessarily other patterns of industrial development can be highly effective in poverty reduction though further industrial progress may be less labour-intensive. A range of policies can promote industrial energy and materials efficiency, often with positive impacts on firms' financial performance as well as the environment. Promoting materials recycling and reuse is an effective, if indirect means of conserving resources. Finally, the growth of multinational interest in corporate social responsibility is traced, with consideration given to both the barriers and opportunities this can pose for developing country enterprises linked to global supply chains.
Book Synopsis Economic Development Of Taiwan: Early Experiences And The Pacific Trade Triangle by : Frank S T Hsiao
Download or read book Economic Development Of Taiwan: Early Experiences And The Pacific Trade Triangle written by Frank S T Hsiao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwan's economic growth since the 1970s has roots in its pre-war development and post-war formation of the Pacific trade triangle. By highlighting the historical perspective of the Japanese linkages and the geographic vantage point of Taiwan-Japan-USA trade triangle, Economic Development of Taiwan features a collection of papers by Frank S T Hsiao and Mei-Chu Wang Hsiao. Published mostly between 1989 and 2002, their analyses on Taiwan's pre-war and post-war early economic history debunk the myth of the country's post-war rags to riches story and revalue the myth of 'wise' government policy. Timely and accessible, this unique volume shows how early Taiwanese experiences of economic development can be valuable paradigms for emerging economies of Asian, African and Latin American countries in this age of globalization.
Book Synopsis Global Competitiveness and Industrial Growth in Taiwan and the Philippines by : Cheng-Tian Kuo
Download or read book Global Competitiveness and Industrial Growth in Taiwan and the Philippines written by Cheng-Tian Kuo and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuo contrasts the economic evolutions of Taiwan and the Philippines as the product of government and industry relations. The two nations shared many economic similarities-yet Taiwan moved from clientelism to state corporatism, while in the Philippines clientelism remains deeply entrenched. Kuo's case studies in the textile, plywood, and electronics industries support these general arguments. He finds that clientelism invariably leads to economic problems, while a laissez-faire approach is unpredictable. The best formula for industrial success in a developing nation is close cooperation between business and government.

Book Synopsis Making Of An Economic Superpower, The: Unlocking China's Secret Of Rapid Industrialization by : Yi Wen
Download or read book Making Of An Economic Superpower, The: Unlocking China's Secret Of Rapid Industrialization written by Yi Wen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China is no doubt one of the most important events in world economic history since the Industrial Revolution. Mainstream economics, especially the institutional theory of economic development based on a dichotomy of extractive vs. inclusive political institutions, is highly inadequate in explaining China's rise. This book argues that only a radical reinterpretation of the history of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the West (as incorrectly portrayed by the institutional theory) can fully explain China's growth miracle and why the determined rise of China is unstoppable despite its current 'backward' financial system and political institutions. Conversely, China's spectacular and rapid transformation from an impoverished agrarian society to a formidable industrial superpower sheds considerable light on the fundamental shortcomings of the institutional theory and mainstream 'blackboard' economic models, and provides more-accurate reevaluations of historical episodes such as Africa's enduring poverty trap despite radical political and economic reforms, Latin America's lost decades and frequent debt crises, 19th century Europe's great escape from the Malthusian trap, and the Industrial Revolution itself.
