Book excerpt: Report to the federal ministers of Environment and Indian & Northern Affairs, Alberta's Minister of Environmental Protection, and NWT's Minister of Renewable Resources. Summarises the main scientific findings of the Northern River Basins Study, which was established to examine the relationship between industrial, municipal, agricultural, and other development and the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave River basins. Reviews the characteristics of the northern river basins and their peoples, the organisation of the Study, and major findings in the areas of environmental overview, use of aquatic resources, traditional knowledge, flow regulation, fish distribution and habitat, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, contaminants, drinking water, ecosystem health, modelling, human health, and cumulative effects. Recommendations by the Study Board, First Nations, and scientific advisors regarding such issues as basin management, monitoring, research, public participation, and a successor organisation are then presented. Also includes a summary of opinions, suggestions, and recommendations expressed at 17 community workshops held throughout the northern river basins area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the potential for off-flavour tainting of water and/or fish in the Athabasca River by compounds discharged from pulp mills. Three different analytical methods commonly used in monitoring for the presence of odorous compounds in water supplies are described and results are presented: odour characterization by a trained flavour profile panel; olfactory gas chromatography; and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. The usefulness of each method in providing different types of information is noted. The results are compared with those of an earlier survey to indicate the impact of combined effluents at Hinton on the odour of the Athabasca River.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the findings of various field and laboratory projects that studied fish distribution, movement, habitat utilization, and gross pathology in the northern Alberta river basins. Begins with a description of the river basins and related water bodies, a list of fish species found, and an overview of fish distribution and relative abundance in the mainstem rivers. This is followed by a synthesis of available information on movements of fish through space and time, as collected from fish tagging and radio telemetry studies. Movements of individual fish are also described (spawning movements and movements to summer feeding and winter habitats). Finally, critical fish habitats (spawning, feeding, and overwintering) are noted, food chain studies are summarized, and responses of fish to changes in water quality (including pathological manifestations) are reviewed.

Book excerpt: Summarizes levels of polychlorinated dioxins and furans in fish observed in various studies on the Peace and Athabasca rivers in Alberta and assesses temporal trends in these contaminants by comparison with previously published data. Begins with background information on chlorinated dioxins and furans, and describes site locations, sampling, and field and laboratory methodologies used. Spatial trends in relation to industrial pollution sources are also noted and risks to humans, fish, and wildlife are evaluated. Fish species analyzed include longnose sucker, burbot, mountain whitefish, and northern pike.

Book excerpt: The development of water and other natural resources in the Upper Colorado River Basin will continue to have an impact on the ecology of this unique ecosystem. Numerous water-development projects have been completed on the river, others are in progress, and still others are contemplated, to provide water necessary for municipalities, irrigated agriculture, and energy production. Although much information is already available on this river, it is widely scattered in the published literature and unpublished reports of various state and federal agencies. This annotated bibliography contains 1,109 published or readily available unpublished references that should be useful in decisions regarding effective management of the Upper Colorado River Basin. Selected key words were assigned to all references and indexed for ease of locating references on particular subjects.

This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review presents summary information on 45 river and great lake basins of the world, which support inland fisheries. The information presented is drawn from published information in peer-reviewed journals as well as grey literature. Each basin summary is presented in a common format, covering the description of the fishery, estimates of catch and numbers of people engaged in the fishery, important biodiversity features and threats to the fishery. An analysis of the replacement costs of inland fish of the basin is also presented. This is expressed in terms of the water, land and greenhouse gas footprint that would arise if the inland fish that are currently produced had to be replaced with other forms of food (such as aquaculture fish, livestock or field crops).

This book was released on 2002-09-22 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 2001, a severe drought occurred in the Klamath River Basin. The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) determined that the newly issued biological opinions and their RPAs must prevail; thus, water that would have gone to irrigators was directed almost entirely to attempts to maintain minimum lake levels and minimum flows as prescribed in the two RPAs. The severe economic consequences of this change in water management led DOI to request that the National Research Council (NRC) independently review the scientific and technical validity of the government's biological opinions and their RPAs. The NRC Committee on Endangered and Threatened Fishes in the Klamath River Basin was formed in response to this request. The committee was charged with filing an interim report after approximately less than 3 months of study and a final report after about 18 months of study. The interim report, which is summarized here, focuses on the biological assessments of the USBR (2001) and the USFWS and NMFS biological opinions of 2001 regarding the effects of Klamath Project operations on the three listed fish species.

This book was released on 2008-04-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Klamath River basin, which spans parts of southern Oregon and northern California, has been the focus of a prominent conflict over competing uses for water. Management actions to protect threatened and endangered fish species in the basin have left less water available for irrigation in dry years and heightened tensions among farmers and other stakeholders including commercial fishermen, Native Americans, conservationists, hunters, anglers, and hydropower producers. This National Research Council book assesses two recent studies that evaluate various aspects of flows in the Klamath basin: (1) the Instream Flow Phase II study (IFS), conducted by Utah State University, and (2) the Natural Flow of the Upper Klamath Basin study (NFS), conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). The book concludes that both studies offer important new information but do not provide enough information for detailed management of flows in the Klamath River, and it offers many suggestions for improving the studies. The report recommends that a comprehensive analysis of the many individual studies of the Klamath river basin be conducted so that a big picture perspective of the entire basin and research and management needs can emerge.
