For America, reliance has been placed on Professor Max Farrand's Development of the United States and C. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Puritans HE work here presented to the reader is intended to give, within moderate compass and in the light of recent research, the history of the rise, growth and decline of that puritan movement which, for a hundred years, so vitally affected the course of our national life. It aims at a middle course. There have been historical monographs dealing with separate portions of the movement; and there have also been connected histories of it as a whole; but the mono graphs were necessarily sectional and incomplete; and on the other hand the connected histories were too elaborate and therefore too lengthy for readers with only limited time at their disposal, but who yet wished to arrive at a fairly trustworthy knowledge of the subject. It is hoped this little book may to some extent meet the needs of readers of this class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Puritans: 1570 1660 The history of the Reformed Church of England between the years 1570 and 1660 is too often treated as if it were but the history of a Government department of education and morals. The close connexion which undoubtedly existed between Church and State under the Tudors and the Stuarts has tended to obscure the fact, that during those years within the bosom of the Church itself was being worked out, independently of the Government, a problem which was essentially religious in its nature, and which only affected politics when men felt bound to put their principles into practice and try to enforce them upon others. That problem was no less than whether England as a nation should or should not cut itself off from historical Christianity, from the principles of Christianity as they had been understood for sixteen centuries; or, in other words, whether Puritanism should or should not succeed in establishing itself as legitimately within the pale of the English Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Puritanism in England The six lectures here published were delivered in Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoons during Lent this year. They are published without alteration. The circumstances of haste and pressure in which they were composed are sufficiently disclosed by their slightness and penury of reference. But the opinions and judgments they express have not been arrived at quickly, or without labour. I have added three Sermons which bear more or less directly on the main theme, and will serve to supply some lacunae in the Lectures. Download or read book English Puritanism written by John Spurr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1998-08-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puritans of seventeenth century England have been blamed for everything from the English civil war to the rise of capitalism. But who were the Puritans of Stuart England? Were they apostles of liberty, who fled from persecution to the New World? Or were they intolerant fanatics, intent on bringing godliness to Stuart England? This study provides a clear narrative of the rise and fall of the Puritans across the troubled seventeenth century. Their story is placed in context by analytical chapters, which describe what the Puritans believed and how they organised their religious and social life. Quoting many contemporary sources, including diaries, plays and sermons, this is a vivid and comprehensible account, drawing on the most recent scholarship. Readers will find this book an indispensable guide, not only to the religious history of seventeenth century England, but also to its political and social history.
