Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making Catholic America, William S. Cossen shows how Catholic men and women worked to prove themselves to be model American citizens in the decades between the Civil War and the Great Depression. Far from being outsiders in American history, Catholics took command of public life in the early twentieth century, claiming leadership in the growing American nation. They produced their own version of American history and claimed the power to remake the nation in their own image, arguing that they were the country's most faithful supporters of freedom and liberty and that their church had birthed American independence. Making Catholic America offers a new interpretation of American life in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, demonstrating the surprising success of an often-embattled religious group in securing for itself a place in the national community and in profoundly altering what it meant to be an American in the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Catholic places the rise of the United States' political conservatism in the context of ferment within the Roman Catholic Church. How did Roman Catholics shift from being perceived as un-American to emerging as the most vocal defenders of the United States as the standard bearer in world history for political liberty and economic prosperity? D. G. Hart charts the development of the complex relationship between Roman Catholicism and American conservatism, and shows how these two seemingly antagonistic ideological groups became intertwined in advancing a certain brand of domestic and international politics. Contrary to the standard narrative, Roman Catholics were some of the most assertive political conservatives directly after World War II, and their brand of politics became one of the most influential means by which Roman Catholicism came to terms with American secular society. It did so precisely as bishops determined the church needed to update its teaching about its place in the modern world. Catholics grappled with political conservatism long before the supposed rightward turn at the time of the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Hart follows the course of political conservatism from John F. Kennedy, the first and only Roman Catholic president of the United States, to George W. Bush, and describes the evolution of the church and its influence on American politics. By tracing the roots of Roman Catholic politicism in American culture, Hart argues that Roman Catholicism's adaptation to the modern world, whether in the United States or worldwide, was as remarkable as its achievement remains uncertain. In the case of Roman Catholicism, the effects of religion on American politics and political conservatism are indisputable.

Book excerpt: Set in our nation’s capital, here is a chillingly realistic tale of people caught in the collision of science, technology, and the consequences of global warming. When the storm got bad, Frank Vanderwal was in his office at the National Science Foundation. When it was over, large chunks of San Diego had eroded into the sea, and D.C. was underwater. Everything Frank and his colleagues feared had culminated in this disaster. And now the world was looking to them to fix it. But even as D.C. bails itself out, a more extreme climate change looms. The melting polar ice caps are shutting down the warm Gulf Stream waters—meaning Ice Age conditions could return. And the last time that happened, eleven thousand years ago, it took just three years to start.…

Book excerpt: Porsche AG, today the most profitable car company in the world, was in 1975 a small but headstrong German automaker on the verge of its most significant development. New national laws were changing the way manufacturers designed their products, but the auto consumer was also craving more exciting and innovative design. That innovation came in 1975 with the release of the revolutionary Porsche 924. This book begins its analysis with the creation of the Porsche 924 and the impact it made on the automotive world. During the 1980s, Porsche honed earlier 924 designs to create the 944 and its Turbo and convertible variants, and later the 968, completing a line that has produced some of the most respected sports cars of the modern era. The text also follows in detail the long production life and development of Porsche's V-8 powered high performance grand tourer, the 928--introduced in 1977, named the 1978 European Car of the Year and culminating in the 350 bhp 928 GTS of the 1990s. This history of the dynamic Porsche family gives a full account of each model and reveals the unique contributions each has made to a constantly evolving automotive world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the NZ Post Award this fascinating, innovative biography is of a true original and significant figure in NZ's early colonisation. "I love doubters: of a truly honest doubter I have great hope." Printer, botanist and missionary, William Colenso was a nineteenth-century maverick, a true original. He protested at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, arguing that Maori did not fully understand its implications. He became a troubled conscience during the white-hot period of colonisation, maintaining his dissident voice throughout his career. Peter Wells refreshes our vision of this awkward, highly talented man, who lost his family after the church expelled him for fathering a child by a Maori woman. Rejected by church, family and friends, Colenso made botany his home and lovingly described the plants of New Zealand. At the same time he wrote a series of remarkable pamphlets that open up our past. 'I write for future generations,' he noted in 1881. The time has come to welcome Colenso back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time that Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, the list of crimes liable to attract the death penalty had effectively been reduced to murder. Yet, despite this, the gallows remained a source of controversy in Victorian Britain and there was a growing unease in liberal quarters surrounding the question of capital punishment. Unease was expressed in various forms, including efforts at outright abolition. Focusing in part on the activities of the Society for the Abolition of Capital Punishment, James Gregory here examines abolitionist strategies, leaders and personnel. He locates the 'gallows question' in an imperial context and explores the ways in which debates about the gallows and abolition featured in literature, from poetry to 'novels of purpose' and popular romances of the underworld. He places the abolitionist movement within the wider Victorian worlds of philanthropy, religious orthodoxy and social morality in a study which will be essential reading for students and researchers of Victorian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Unrepentant Liberal is a book of writings by an American professor of political science over a particular period of history. It includes an introduction by the author, who envisaged this book in his lifetime. Unfortunately, he died before its completion. There is, in addition, a preface by Ann Karson, his widow. This book contains a chapter from Dr Karsons major work, American Labor Unions and Politics, 1900-1918, and one from a previous writing on which it was based. Among other things, these and some of his scholarly articles and reviews about American labor tell of the discovery for which he is known, that the influence of Roman Catholicism should be added to previously noted factors accounting for the relative conservatism of American unions and the absence of a Labor Party in the United States. American labor in the early 20th Century was his research specialty. Other articles and reviews concern aspects of American government and politics, on which he regularly taught, and world affairs, as well as health issues and education. Topics include race relations, civil liberties, religion, socialism, the left, the right and foreign affairs.
