Download or read book The Black Robin written by David Butler and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the rare Chatham Island black robin. It will inspire all those concerned with the conservation of endangered species and demonstrates that recovery is possible even in the most extreme cases. In fact, the black robin was nearly extinct--reduced to one surviving breeding pair--when the program described here was put into effect. The innovative techniques used by the team responsible for this effort are described in detail and will allow wildlife biologists around the world to adopt similar strategies suited to their own needs. One of the book's co-authors led the black robin program, and the other was one of the scientists on the team. Written in a lively, nontechnical manner, this book will be of interest to a wide range of conservationists, wildlife biologists, and general readers.

Book Synopsis Research Into the Status and Distribution of Chatham Islands Endangered Invertebrates by : Rowan M. Emberson
Download or read book Research Into the Status and Distribution of Chatham Islands Endangered Invertebrates written by Rowan M. Emberson and published by . This book was released on 1996-10 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of public collections in New Zealand has established the former distribution of three protected beetle species, the Chatham Islands click beetle (Amychus candezei Pascoe), the coxella weevil (Hadramphus spinipennis Broun), and the Pitt Island longhorn beetle (Xylotoles costatus Pascoe). It has shown that there has been a significant contraction in the distribution of all species to the outer predator-free islands of the Chathams group. A field expedition in November and December 1992 was successful in locating all three species and extending the known distribution of A. candezei to Mangere Island. However, only a single specimen of X. costatus was found. One of the main findings of the expedition was the contrast in diversity and abundance of the ground-dwelling insect fauna between the predator-free islands and Chatham and Pitt Islands. This demonstrates what has already been lost from the larger islands of the group and the extent of the problem facing the Pitt Island restoration project.

Book Synopsis Endangered Species by : Sonia Benson
Download or read book Endangered Species written by Sonia Benson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endangered Species, 2nd Edition, presents information on endangered and threatened mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mollusks, insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and plants. Its 240 entries -- including 40 new species added to the 2nd Edition -- were chosen to give a glimpse of the broad range of species currently facing endangerment. While well-publicized examples such as the American bison, northern spotted owl, and gray wolf are examined, so, too, are less conspicuous -- yet no less threatened -- species such as the Australian ant, Cape vulture, and Peebles Navajo cactus. The entries are spread across three volumes and are divided into sections by classes. Within each class, species are arranged alphabetically by common name. Color locator maps outlining the range of a particular species are included in each entry to help users find unfamiliar countries or locations. More than 200 color photographs provide a more concrete vision of the species. Sidebar boxes containing interesting and related information are also included in some entries.
