Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Restoration of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus Wren bases his design on the proportions of the Doric order. The lowest part consists of columns, with statues seven feet high on the cornice; on the sixteen inner columns rose the pteron, consisting of a pedestal twenty feet high, pilasters of twenty-four feet with a cornice of six feet, and a stone covering of twenty-four feet, the steps being twelve inches high and six inches saile.' I have omitted, ' he says, the triglyphs in the frieze, which I take to be the only place for the inscription, and monuments never were Without.' There might be round upon the first order twenty statues, sixteen more below upon the solids in niches, and twelve in niches of the pteron, in all forty-eight, each statuary taking t'welve.' Book Synopsis Cityscapes and Monuments of Western Asia Minor by : Eva Mortensen
Download or read book Cityscapes and Monuments of Western Asia Minor written by Eva Mortensen and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cityscapes consist of houses, streets, civic buildings, sanctuaries, tombs, monuments, and inscriptions created by multiple generations of citizens and foreigners with an interest in the city; they are interpreted and reinterpreted as expressions of past lives, changing relations of power, memories, and various identities. The present volume publishes 25 contributions written by scholars specializing in the history and archaeology of western Asia Minor. New and well-known material – literary, epigraphical, numismatic, and archaeological – is presented and analyzed through the twin lenses of memory and identity. The contributions cover more than 1000 years of cultural diversity during changing political systems, from the Lydian and Persian hegemony in the Archaic period through Athenian supremacy and Persian satrapal rule in the Classical period, then autocratic kingship in Hellenistic times until, finally, more than half a millennium of Roman rule. Identities are voiced through several media and visible at many levels of the ancient societies. So are the places of memory – the Lieux de Mémoire – and the studies presented here provide new insights into how human beings chose, deliberately or subconsciously, to commemorate their past and their ancestors, and how identity was displayed and expressed under shifting political rule.

Book Synopsis The Diffusion of Classical Art in Antiquity by : John Boardman
Download or read book The Diffusion of Classical Art in Antiquity written by John Boardman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the world’s leading authorities on ancient Greek art, a groundbreaking account of how Greek images were understood and used by other ancient peoples, from Britain to China In this book, acclaimed archaeologist and art historian John Boardman explores Greek art as a foreign art transmitted to the non-Greeks of antiquity—peoples who weren’t necessarily able to judge the meaning of Greek art and who may have regarded the Greeks themselves with great hostility. Boardman examines how and why the arts of the classical world traveled and to what effect, from Britain to China, from roughly the eighth century BCE to the early centuries CE. In some places, such as Italy, Greek images were overwhelmingly successful. In Egypt, the Celtic world, the eastern steppes, and other regions with strong local traditions, they were never effectively assimilated. And in cultures where there was a subtler blend of influences, notably in the Buddhist east, classical images served as a catalyst to the generation of new styles. Along the way, Boardman demonstrates that looking at Greek art from the outside provides a wealth of new insights into Greek art itself, and he raises important questions about how images in general are copied and reinterpreted.
Book Synopsis Pliny the Elder and the Emergence of Renaissance Architecture by : Peter Fane-Saunders
Download or read book Pliny the Elder and the Emergence of Renaissance Architecture written by Peter Fane-Saunders and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naturalis historia by Pliny the Elder provided Renaissance scholars, artists and architects with details of ancient architectural practice and long-lost architectural wonders - material that was often unavailable elsewhere in classical literature. Pliny's descriptions frequently included the dimensions of these buildings, as well as details of their unusual construction materials and ornament. This book describes, for the first time, how the passages were interpreted from around 1430 to 1580, that is, from Alberti to Palladio. Chapters are arranged chronologically within three interrelated sections - antiquarianism; architectural writings; drawings and built monuments - thereby making it possible for the reader to follow the changing attitudes to Pliny over the period. The resulting study establishes the Naturalis historia as the single most important literary source after Vitruvius's De architectura.
