Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Research Agenda for Models: To Plan and Schedule Manufacturing Systems In this report we propose a research agenda for the development of models to plan and schedule discrete-parts manufacturing systems. The report was "commissioned" by a set of industrial researchers, academic researchers, and Dr. William Spurgeon of the National Science Foundation (see Acknowledgments for details). Its purposes are to articulate research areas of national importance in the planning and scheduling of discrete-parts manufacturing systems, and to provide funding agencies and researchers with a related agenda. By "planning and scheduling" we mean the acquisition and coordination of the means of production: . capital resources . human resources . parts and materials . tools and accessories . information The research agenda would provide models that give fundamental principles, insights and/or computer-based algorithms that can be used interactively and iteratively by a decision-maker. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control and Dynamic Systems, Volume 37: Advances in Industrial Systems provides an overview of the state of knowledge in industrial systems. This volume contains nine chapters and begins with a paper on the objective measures used to characterize the performance of computers which control critical processes. This is followed by separate chapters on the design of automotive power train control systems; control techniques in the pulp and paper industry; developments production scheduling research and practice; a general model-based failure detection and diagnosis methodology; and the application of model-predictive control techniques to problems with several input and output variables. Subsequent chapters deal with techniques for dealing with the problem of providing a complete, coherent, and reliable data base from a collection of switch and breaker status data and measurements; systematic approaches to modifying a finite element model; and optimization techniques in industrial chemical systems. The contributions in this volume will provide a unique and significant reference source for practicing professionals as well as those involved with advancing the state of the art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has resulted from the activities of IFAC TC 5.2 “Manufacturing Modelling for Management and Control”. The book offers an introduction and advanced techniques of scheduling applications to cloud manufacturing and Industry 4.0 systems for larger audience. This book uncovers fundamental principles and recent developments in the theory and application of scheduling methodology to cloud manufacturing and Industry 4.0. The purpose of this book is to present recent developments in scheduling in cloud manufacturing and Industry 4.0 and to systemize these developments in new taxonomies and methodological principles to shape this new research domain. This book addresses the needs of both researchers and practitioners to uncover the challenges and opportunities of scheduling techniques’ applications to cloud manufacturing and Industry 4.0. For the first time, it comprehensively conceptualizes scheduling in cloud manufacturing and Industry 4.0 systems as a new research domain. The chapters of the book are written by the leading international experts and utilize methods of operations research, industrial engineering and computer science. Such a multi-disciplinary combination is unique and comprehensively deciphers major problem taxonomies, methodologies, and applications to scheduling in cloud manufacturing and Industry 4.0.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Production and Operations Management by : Martin K. Starr
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Production and Operations Management written by Martin K. Starr and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable volume highlights the importance of Production and Operations Management (POM) as a field of study and research contributing to substantial business and social growth. The editors emphasize how POM works with a range of systems—agriculture, disaster management, e-commerce, healthcare, hospitality, military systems, not-for-profit, retail, sports, sustainability, telecommunications, and transport—and how it contributes to the growth of each. Martin K. Starr and Sushil K. Gupta gather an international team of experts to provide researchers and students with a panoramic vision of the field. Divided into eight parts, the book presents the history of POM, and establishes the foundation upon which POM has been built while also revisiting and revitalizing topics that have long been essential. It examines the significance of processes and projects to the fundamental growth of the POM field. Critical emerging themes and new research are examined with open minds and this is followed by opportunities to interface with other business functions. Finally, the next era is discussed in ways that combine practical skill with philosophy in its analysis of POM, including traditional and nontraditional applications, before concluding with the editors’ thoughts on the future of the discipline. Students of POM will find this a comprehensive, definitive resource on the state of the discipline and its future directions.
