Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report of the Republic of Honduras This country is more' than a century behind the age in all that constitutes g1 eatness Every obstacle has been thrown in the way of progress: her destiny, so far, has been written in blood, devas tation, and ruin.' 'while under the dominion of Sp ain, foreigners were excluded from the country, and the inhabitants burthened by taxation, and in every 6ther conceivable way. The silver mines were worked under such exactions as to enrich the mother'country upc'm the labor of her subjects. Even under these burdens, Hondu ras bade fair to become the rival of Spain 1n the' growth of grape. Spain became jealous of her as a rival in that inte1es't, and, by military fmce, destroye'd every vineyard ln the country. In fact, every obstacle possible was thrown in the way of the prosperity of Central America. Oppression became intolerable. Lwar en sued, and Central America won her independence. Each province then formed its own government. Since that time internal feuds and civil Wars have kept every interest prostrated; and not until recently have the people been allowed to enjoy peace. 'but all classes now express the hope that a better day has dawned, and they contemplate, with extreme déhght, the pleasures of peace. Thusiyou find the country almost as it came from the hands of the Creator, with its tall mountains, broad and fertile valleys untouch ed by the hand of indust1y. The timbered lands of these valleys are bad to clear. The t1ees are sometimes very large, but do not stand thick. Savannas only require a fence 1n many places. The lands of the timbered valleys I consider best. The cost of putting tinbered land in cultivation 18 about $6 per acre. Although tim ber 1s in abundance; but little can be foiind that can be split into rails, cfinsequently fencingrfor immediate use must be made in some other way. All that is necessary is, for a fence to last. Two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The United States, Honduras, And The Crisis In Central America by : Deborah Sundloff Schulz
Download or read book The United States, Honduras, And The Crisis In Central America written by Deborah Sundloff Schulz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the 1980s Honduras was an obscure backwater, of little public or policy concern in the United States. With the advent of the Reagan administration, however, Hondurans found themselves at the center of the US-Central American imbroglio, a launching pad for the administration's contra war against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua and for counterinsurgency operations against guerrillas in El Salvador. Placing events in the context of Honduran history, the authors provide penetrating insights into the causes of revolution in Central America and the sources of stability that enabled Honduras to escape the civil strife that consumed its neighbors. At the same time, the work offers a fascinating account of Honduran domestic politics and of the personalities, motives, and maneuvers of policymakers on both sides of the U.S.-Honduras relationship—too often a tale of intrigue, violence, and corruption.

Download or read book Banana Cultures written by John Soluri and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-03-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bananas, the most frequently consumed fresh fruit in the United States, have been linked to Miss Chiquita and Carmen Miranda, "banana republics," and Banana Republic clothing stores—everything from exotic kitsch, to Third World dictatorships, to middle-class fashion. But how did the rise in banana consumption in the United States affect the banana-growing regions of Central America? In this lively, interdisciplinary study, John Soluri integrates agroecology, anthropology, political economy, and history to trace the symbiotic growth of the export banana industry in Honduras and the consumer mass market in the United States. Beginning in the 1870s when bananas first appeared in the U.S. marketplace, Soluri examines the tensions between the small-scale growers, who dominated the trade in the early years, and the shippers. He then shows how rising demand led to changes in production that resulted in the formation of major agribusinesses, spawned international migrations, and transformed great swaths of the Honduran environment into monocultures susceptible to plant disease epidemics that in turn changed Central American livelihoods. Soluri also looks at labor practices and workers' lives, changing gender roles on the banana plantations, the effects of pesticides on the Honduran environment and people, and the mass marketing of bananas to consumers in the United States. His multifaceted account of a century of banana production and consumption adds an important chapter to the history of Honduras, as well as to the larger history of globalization and its effects on rural peoples, local economies, and biodiversity.
