Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on Bovine Tuberculosis In countries where there has been little or no importation Of cattle, and in which the native breeds still exist unchanged, as in many parts Of Russia, Austria and Spain, in the northern part Of Sweden and Norway, and in parts Of Africa, tuberculosis is practically unknown. This is true Of the cattle on the island of Jersey, where for more than a hundred years foreign cattle have not been introduced. In the United Stat-es the disease is very widely distributed. There are, however, large areas in which it is practically unknown. The Western steers that are killed in the slaughter houses of Kansas City, Omaha, Sioux City and Chicago, are practically free from it. In other localities, especially where there is an extensive interchange Of animals, a large percentage Of the herds are more or less affected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the biology of M. bovis, followed by the status of bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) in African countries, primarily based on zoonotic and epidemiological field reports. Since the accumulation of data is valueless unless it led to practicable control measures, emphasis is put on locally adapted protocols for future control of the disease. In order to systematically evaluate the knowledge base of bTB, Epidemiologic Problem Oriented Approach (EPOA) methodology was used. The methodology is composed of two triads: i) the problem identification/characterization triad, which is mainly descriptive in nature, and ii) the problem management/solution/mitigation triad, which is mainly geared toward problem management/solution (see figure). The first triad comprises three pillars: i) agent ii) host, and iii) environment and the second one: i) therapeutics/treatment, ii) prevention/control, and iii) health maintenance/promotion. The two triads are linked together by the diagnostic procedure linkage. The systematic and detailed studies of the ‘Host-Agent-Environment’ interactions are the building blocks to the understanding of agent transmission pathways and disease spread. These may include data about the disease status of the country, the nature of the disease agent and its hosts, the modes of transmission, the wildlife reservoirs in nature, persistence of infection, and agent survival in animal products and the environment. The problem identification and characterization triad identifies these interactions. Once a problem has been identified and well understood, the next step is to minimize the risk of transmission and spread of a disease. This area, referred to as problem solution/management triad, consists of problem management alternatives that rely upon prevention/control, and health maintenance/promotion of the disease in livestock, wildlife, and humans with the emphasis on resource-poor, developing countries in Africa.

Book excerpt: Investigation of the complex issues surrounding the links between bovine tuberculosis and infected meat - with a contemporary resonance in the BSE scare. By the late 1890s, the question of bovine tuberculosis (TB) and infected meat had become one of national importance, reflecting a national sense of fear. Although the extent of the threat to health proved uncertain, bovine TB hadcome to stand at the centre of debates about diseased meat and public health. The anxiety it caused was part of a longer story, linked to concern over food safety, changes in how tuberculosis was understood, and to worries over diseased meat and the 'evils' of the urban meat trade. The Bovine Scourge explores the debates and fears that came to surround bovine TB, meat and public health between the 1860s and 1914. It traces how diseased meat and bovine TB emerged as a public health issue, examines the measures adopted to protect the public, and addresses how by the Edwardian era milk had become the major source of concern in discussion of bovine TB. It also raises important questions about the history of food safety, the concerns generated by diseased meat, and the role of the public health and veterinary profession in preventing the sale of contaminated food. KEIR WADDINGTON is a senior lecturerin the School of History and Archaeology at Cardiff University.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX Report Of The International Commission On The Control Of Bovine Tuberculosis To the President of the American Veterinary Medical Association: Owing to the great economic and sanitary significance of animal tuberculosis to the live stock industry of America, and the many and varied factors which must of necessity be accounted with in formulating successful measures for its eradication, the American Veterinary Medical Association, at its meeting in Chicago in September, 1909, appointed the International Commission on the Control of Bovine Tuberculosis. The Commission was instructed to study the problem of tuberculosis among cattle and to report at the next meeting of the Association upon reasonable and economically practicable methods or systems to be recommended to both officials and live stock owners for eradicating this great scourge of domesticated animals. It is recognized that tuberculosis is widely prevalent among cattle and other animals and that the frequency with which this great evil occurs is increasing rather than declining. As tuberculosis is one of the strictly preventable infections, there is good ground for the belief that through the formulation and enforcement of proper regulations the disease may eventually be entirely suppressed. The Members were: Dr. J. G. Rutherford, Ottawa, Canada, Chairman; Dr. M. H. Reynolds, St. Paul, Minn., Secretary; Senator W. C. Edwards, Ottawa, Canada; Mr. J. J. Ferguson, Chicago, III.; Mr. J. W. Flavelle, Toronto, Can.; Hon. W. D. Hoard, Fort Atkinson, Wis.; Dr. C. A. Hodgetts, Toronto, Can.; Dr. J. N. Hurty, Indianapolis, Ind.; Dr. J. R. Mohler. Washington, D. C.; Dr. V. A.
