Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston: Containing the Statistics of the United States' Direct Tax of 1798, as Assessed on Boston; And the Names of the Inhabitants of Boston in 1790, as Collected for the First National Census Society has had the papers bound in twenty volumes, and some indexes have been made. Vol. I. Begins with the north part of Maine Boston is in Vol. IV. The returns of a few towns are missing, accidentally lost. These papers, of course, did not belong to the Custom House, but Gen. Lincoln was in charge of them, while also serving as Col lector. The Census of Boston was made in 1790, undoubtedly under the authority Of the United States government, it being the first of the national decennial enumerations. The lists here printed are from the manuscript of Col. Samuel Bradford, now preserved by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. In Lemuel Shattuck's admirable Report on the City Census of 1845, it is stated that besides the National Census taken in 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840, there had been two State Censuses, in 1837 and 1840, and special City Censuses in 1825 and 1835. Since that date the State or dered a Census in 1850, and then the State decennial Census was taken in 1855, 1865, 1875, and 1885. Although we have made some citations from Shattuck's report, in the first volume of our own reports, the following tables copied from their official statements may be of service. They are Copied from Shattuck's report, and from the State Census of 1885, prepared by Carroll D. Wright. From ancient glaciers to landmaking schemes and modern infrastructure projects, the city’s terrain has been transformed almost constantly over the centuries. The Atlas of Boston History traces the city’s history and geography from the last ice age to the present with beautifully rendered maps. Edited by historian Nancy S. Seasholes, this landmark volume captures all aspects of Boston’s past in a series of fifty-seven stunning full-color spreads. Each section features newly created thematic maps that focus on moments and topics in that history. These maps are accompanied by hundreds of historical and contemporary illustrations and explanatory text from historians and other expert contributors. Download or read book Town House written by Bernard L. Herman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this abundantly illustrated volume, Bernard Herman provides a history of urban dwellings and the people who built and lived in them in early America. In the eighteenth century, cities were constant objects of idealization, often viewed as the outward manifestations of an organized, civil society. As the physical objects that composed the largest portion of urban settings, town houses contained and signified different aspects of city life, argues Herman. Taking a material culture approach, Herman examines urban domestic buildings from Charleston, South Carolina, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as well as those in English cities and towns, to better understand why people built the houses they did and how their homes informed everyday city life. Working with buildings and documentary sources as diverse as court cases and recipes, Herman interprets town houses as lived experience. Chapters consider an array of domestic spaces, including the merchant family's house, the servant's quarter, and the widow's dower. Herman demonstrates that city houses served as sites of power as well as complex and often conflicted artifacts mapping the everyday negotiations of social identity and the display of sociability.
