Book excerpt: The issue of regularity has played a central role in the theory of Partial Differential Equations almost since its inception, and despite the tremendous advances made it still remains a very fruitful research field. In particular considerable strides have been made in regularity estimates for degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic equations over the last several years, and in many unexpected and challenging directions. Because of all these recent results, it seemed high time to create an overview that would highlight emerging trends and issues in this fascinating research topic in a proper and effective way. The course aimed to show the deep connections between these topics and to open new research directions through the contributions of leading experts in all of these fields.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Recent Advances in PDEs and Applications, in honor of Hugo Beirão da Veiga's 70th birthday, held from February 17–21, 2014, in Levico Terme, Italy. The conference brought together leading experts and researchers in nonlinear partial differential equations to promote research and to stimulate interactions among the participants. The workshop program testified to the wide-ranging influence of Hugo Beirão da Veiga on the field of partial differential equations, in particular those related to fluid dynamics. In his own work, da Veiga has been a seminal influence in many important areas: Navier-Stokes equations, Stokes systems, non-Newtonian fluids, Euler equations, regularity of solutions, perturbation theory, vorticity phenomena, and nonlinear potential theory, as well as various degenerate or singular models in mathematical physics. This same breadth is reflected in the mathematical papers included in this volume.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on New Developments in the Analysis of Nonlocal Operators, held from October 28–30, 2016, at the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over the last decade there has been a resurgence of interest in problems involving nonlocal operators, motivated by applications in many areas such as analysis, geometry, and stochastic processes. Problems represented in this volume include uniqueness for weak solutions to abstract parabolic equations with fractional time derivatives, the behavior of the one-phase Bernoulli-type free boundary near a fixed boundary and its relation to a Signorini-type problem, connections between fractional powers of the spherical Laplacian and zeta functions from the analytic number theory and differential geometry, and obstacle problems for a class of not stable-like nonlocal operators for asset price models widely used in mathematical finance. The volume also features a comprehensive introduction to various aspects of the fractional Laplacian, with many historical remarks and an extensive list of references, suitable for beginners and more seasoned researchers alike.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this monograph are to present some topics from the theory of monotone operators and nonlinear semigroup theory which are directly applicable to the existence and uniqueness theory of initial-boundary-value problems for partial differential equations and to construct such operators as realizations of those problems in appropriate function spaces. A highlight of this presentation is the large number and variety of examples introduced to illustrate the connection between the theory of nonlinear operators and partial differential equations. These include primarily semilinear or quasilinear equations of elliptic or of parabolic type, degenerate cases with change of type, related systems and variational inequalities, and spatial boundary conditions of the usual Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin or dynamic type. The discussions of evolution equations include the usual initial-value problems as well as periodic or more general nonlocal constraints, history-value problems, those which may change type due to a possibly vanishing coefficient of the time derivative, and other implicit evolution equations or systems including hysteresis models. The scalar conservation law and semilinear wave equations are briefly mentioned, and hyperbolic systems arising from vibrations of elastic-plastic rods are developed. The origins of a representative sample of such problems are given in the appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented here corresponds to Fermi lectures that I was invited to deliver at the Scuola Normale di Pisa in the spring of 1998. The obstacle problem consists in studying the properties of minimizers of the Dirichlet integral in a domain D of Rn, among all those configurations u with prescribed boundary values and costrained to remain in D above a prescribed obstacle F. In the Hilbert space H1(D) of all those functions with square integrable gradient, we consider the closed convex set K of functions u with fixed boundary value and which are greater than F in D. There is a unique point in K minimizing the Dirichlet integral. That is called the solution to the obstacle problem.

Book excerpt: This textbook is a completely revised, updated, and expanded English edition of the important Analyse fonctionnelle (1983). In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.

Book excerpt: In the present edition I have included "Supplements and Problems" located at the end of each chapter. This was done with the aim of illustrating the possibilities of the methods contained in the book, as well as with the desire to make good on what I have attempted to do over the course of many years for my students-to awaken their creativity, providing topics for independent work. The source of my own initial research was the famous two-volume book Methods of Mathematical Physics by D. Hilbert and R. Courant, and a series of original articles and surveys on partial differential equations and their applications to problems in theoretical mechanics and physics. The works of K. o. Friedrichs, which were in keeping with my own perception of the subject, had an especially strong influence on me. I was guided by the desire to prove, as simply as possible, that, like systems of n linear algebraic equations in n unknowns, the solvability of basic boundary value (and initial-boundary value) problems for partial differential equations is a consequence of the uniqueness theorems in a "sufficiently large" function space. This desire was successfully realized thanks to the introduction of various classes of general solutions and to an elaboration of the methods of proof for the corresponding uniqueness theorems. This was accomplished on the basis of comparatively simple integral inequalities for arbitrary functions and of a priori estimates of the solutions of the problems without enlisting any special representations of those solutions.

Book excerpt: This book presents the texts of seminars presented during the years 1995 and 1996 at the Université Paris VI and is the first attempt to present a survey on this subject. Starting from the classical conditions for existence and unicity of a solution in the most simple case-which requires more than basic stochartic calculus-several refinements on the hypotheses are introduced to obtain more general results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With many updates and additional exercises, the second edition of this book continues to provide readers with a gentle introduction to rough path analysis and regularity structures, theories that have yielded many new insights into the analysis of stochastic differential equations, and, most recently, stochastic partial differential equations. Rough path analysis provides the means for constructing a pathwise solution theory for stochastic differential equations which, in many respects, behaves like the theory of deterministic differential equations and permits a clean break between analytical and probabilistic arguments. Together with the theory of regularity structures, it forms a robust toolbox, allowing the recovery of many classical results without having to rely on specific probabilistic properties such as adaptedness or the martingale property. Essentially self-contained, this textbook puts the emphasis on ideas and short arguments, rather than aiming for the strongest possible statements. A typical reader will have been exposed to upper undergraduate analysis and probability courses, with little more than Itô-integration against Brownian motion required for most of the text. From the reviews of the first edition: "Can easily be used as a support for a graduate course ... Presents in an accessible way the unique point of view of two experts who themselves have largely contributed to the theory" - Fabrice Baudouin in the Mathematical Reviews "It is easy to base a graduate course on rough paths on this ... A researcher who carefully works her way through all of the exercises will have a very good impression of the current state of the art" - Nicolas Perkowski in Zentralblatt MATH
