Book Synopsis The Prism of Race by : David Lehmann
Download or read book The Prism of Race written by David Lehmann and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil has developed a distinctive response to the injustices inflicted by the country’s race relations regime. Despite the mixed racial background of most Brazilians, the state recognizes people’s racial classification according to a simple official scheme in which those self-assigned as black, together with “brown” and “indigenous” (preto-pardo-indigena), can qualify for specially allocated resources, most controversially quota places at public universities. Although this quota system has been somewhat successful, many other issues that disproportionately affect the country’s black population remain unresolved, and systemic policies to reduce structural inequality remain off the agenda. In The Prism of Race, David Lehmann explores, theoretically and practically, issues of race, the state, social movements, and civil society, and then goes beyond these themes to ask whether Brazilian politics will forever circumvent the severe problems facing the society by co-optation and by tinkering with unjust structures. Lehmann disrupts the paradigm of current scholarly thought on Brazil, placing affirmative action disputes in their political and class context, bringing back the concept of state corporatism, and questioning the strength and independence of Brazilian civil society.
Book Synopsis The Crisis of Multiculturalism in Latin America by : David Lehmann
Download or read book The Crisis of Multiculturalism in Latin America written by David Lehmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a challenging view of the adoption and co-option of multiculturalism in Latin America from six scholars with extensive experience of grassroots movements and intellectual debates. It raises serious questions of theory, method, and interpretation for both social scientists and policymakers on the basis of cases in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Multicultural policies have enabled people to recover the land of their ancestors, administer justice in accordance with their traditions, provide recognition as full citizens of the nation, and promote affirmative action to enable them to take the place in society which is theirs by right. The message of this book is that while the multicultural response has done much to raise the symbolic recognition of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples nationally and internationally, its application calls for a profound reappraisal in spheres such as land, gender, institutional design, and equal opportunities. Written by scholars with long-term and in-depth engagement in Latin America, the chapters show that multicultural theories and policies, which assume racial and cultural boundaries to be clear-cut, overlook the pervasive reality of racial and cultural mixture and place excessive confidence in identity politics.

Book Synopsis Sowing the Whirlwind by : Geert Arent Banck
Download or read book Sowing the Whirlwind written by Geert Arent Banck and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These articles represent a multidisciplinary approach to the so-called soya boom in Southern Brazil. This crop has assumed such a dominant position in the agrarian development of the region since the early 1970s that soya has virtually become a metaphor for the profound transition which has taken place there. Old structures of production have been eliminated, with small -scale agricultural producers in particular being driven from their land. The result has been a large measure of social unrest, but at the same time many have also seized new opportunties. Of course, soya has not been the only factor in this process of development, but all the same this crop is the metaphor 'par excellence' to typify the transition. A fascinating aspect of this situation is the fact that a process of this kind is closely connected with developments in the international market in commodities, and in the national market. Without claiming to be comprehensive, this collection of articles is an attempt to throw light on the various aspects of the process of change in the agrarian structure of Southern Brazil within the wider context of international and national developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-examines the relationship between development strategy and political regime in twentieth-century Brazil. The first part of the study examines the beginning in the 1920s and 1930s of the centralized regime and state-centered development model later challenged in the 1980s, taking into account the economic and political role of Sao Paulo relative to the federal government. The analysis provides a distinctive account of the regime ruling Brazil from the 1930s through the 1980s. The second part focuses on the process of economic and political change in the 1980s and 1990s, paying particular attention to the Cardoso administration.

Book Synopsis Disputing Citizenship by : Clarke, John
Download or read book Disputing Citizenship written by Clarke, John and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2014-01-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. Citizenship is always in dispute – in practice as well as in theory – but conventional perspectives do not address why the concept of citizenship is so contentious. This unique book presents a new perspective on citizenship by treating it as a continuing focus of dispute. The authors dispute the way citizenship is normally conceived and analysed within the social sciences, developing a view of citizenship as always emerging from struggle. This view is advanced through an exploration of the entanglements of politics, culture and power that are both embodied and contested in forms and practices of citizenship. This compelling view of citizenship emerges from the international and interdisciplinary collaboration of the four authors, drawing on the diverse disputes over citizenship in their countries of origin (Brazil, France, the UK and the US). The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the field of citizenship, no matter what their geographical, political or academic location.
