Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reference Handbook of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 8 of 8: Embracing the Entire Range of Scientific and Practical Medicine and Allied Science; Illustrated by Numerous Chromolitographs and Three Hunded and Thirty-Seven Half Tone and Wood Engravings Strontium. - General Medicinal Properties of Com pounds of Strontium - Salts of strontium resemble those of calcium in being practically non-poisonous to the human system and in tending to improve nutri tion. Also they are of low diffusion power, and accordingly are comparatively slow of absorption. Strontium has been proposed in medicine as affording a base for medicinal salts that is non-poisonous and even agreeable to the stomach. Accordingly stron tium has been suggested for the basic carrier of bro mine, iodine, and salicylic acid, and the bromide, iodide, and salicylate of the metal are considerad preferable to the corresponding potassium and sodium salts, because better borne by the stomach. The United States Pharmacopoeia recognizes stron tium bromide, iodide, and salicylate (see Bromides, Iodides, and Salicylates); and formerly also the lactate, which latter salt will be considered here since its effects are not due specifically to its acid radical. Such conditions arise in head operations where temporary control of one external carotid may suffice or that of both common carotids may be needed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reference Handbook of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 1 of 8: Embracing the Entire Range of Scientific and Practical Medicine and Allied Science The thanks of the editor are due to the many contributors to the former editions of this work who have revised their articles, preserving the framework but rewriting them with the ripened experience of thirteen years of added work in their special lines. To those also who have contributed for the first time to this edition or have added to the number of their former contributions, the editor desires to express his gratitude for their prized assistance. And finally he wishes to record his obligation to the many friends who have aided him by suggestions of articles and of writers, and especially to Dr. Buck for encourage ment and advice on many points. The Publishers, by their ready acceptance of his suggestions, sometimes involving greatly increased expense, have lightened his labors in no small measure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reference Handbook of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 4 of 8: Embracing the Entire Range of Scientific and Practical Medicine and Allied Science; Illustrated by Numerous Chromolithographs and Nine Hundred and Seventy-Seven Half-Tone and Wood Engravings For the performance of an evisceration a pair of long blunt-pointed scissors is necessary, by means of which the thorax or abdomen is entered after making traction upon the trunk with the prolapsed arm. If the anterior thoracic wall presents it is advisable to excise the sternum together with the adjacent ribs and through the opening to deliver the thoracic vis cera with the assistance of a sponge-holder or similar instrument. The diaphragm can then be cut through and the abdominal viscera likewise extracted. In most cases it will be found that the delivery cannot be completed until a decapitation has been done, but as the size of the trunk is diminished by the eviscera tion, the neck can as a rule be more readily reached with the sharp hook. Hemorrhage after these operations, particularly if the mother has been subjected to a long labor with more or less tonicity of the uterus, is very common and a satisfactory and permanent uterine contraction should be provided for by guarding the fundus, expressing the placenta completely together with all clots and keeping the patient as quiet as possible. Ergot by mouth or hypodermic is advisable. All lacerations of the perineum and extensive ones the cervix must be immediately repaired. T chances for septic infection are increased by t necessary manipulations and this fact should known and guarded against.
