"Take these pills with me," she tells him, "and all the pain will go away." This was only th beginning for Joseph Acevai. His mother tried to convince him to commit suicide. She brainwashed him into believing his father was a monster. She kidnapped him from the life he knew and forced him to live under a false name. These horrors led Joe to the life of a high school dropout, a drug abuser and dealer, and then to a jail cell at Riker's Island. From out of these depts, Joseph Carlucci Adevai found God. Through His grace, he shook his addictions and conquered his demons. Now he is the Senior Pastor of Grace Church of North Brunswick, CEO of Serenity Springs Recovery Center, retired senior vice president of a $25 billion company, and proud husband and father. Pastor Joe has made and lived through nearly every mistake imaginable. His life is proof that everyone--no matter who they are, how they struggle, or what they've done--has a reason to live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Reason to Live explores the human-animal relationship through the narratives of eleven people living with HIV and their animal companions. The narratives, based on a series of interviews with HIV-positive individuals and their animal companions in Australia, span the entirety of the HIV epidemic, from public awareness and discrimination in the 1980s and 1990s to survival and hope in the twenty-first century. Each narrative is explored within the context of theory (for example, attachment theory, the "biophilia hypothesis," neurochemical and neurophysiological effects, laughter, play, death anxiety, and stigma) in order to understand the unique bond between human and animal during an "epidemic of stigma." A consistent theme is that these animals provided their human companions with "a reason to live" throughout the epidemic. Long-term survivors describe past animal companions who intuitively understood their needs and offered unconditional love and support during this turbulent period. More recently diagnosed HIV-positive narrators describe animal companions within the context of hope and the wellness narrative of living and aging with HIV in the twenty-first century. Bringing together these narratives offers insight into one aspect of the multifaceted HIV epidemic when human turned against human, and helps explain why it was frequently left to the animals to support their human companions. Importantly, it recognizes the enduring bond between human and animal within the context of theory and narrative, thus creating a cultural memory in a way that has never been done before.

Johnston's deftly expresses how lonely and isolating depression can be for sufferers. Poignant and humorous in equal measure.' It was Winston Churchill who popularized the phrase Black Dog to describe the bouts of depression he experienced for much of his life. When this same question was posed to the author of this book by his 6 year-old niece, the gravity of the question became intense and the urgency to find the answer was greatly felt. This book is an attempt by the author to respond to the child’s question from a psycho-physiological point of view by examining the idea that love is the reason we live. The narrative highlights the existence of physiological dictates, which conceivably consists of the neuro-hormonal mechanisms and the idea, spirit, concept and goals existing behind these mechanisms, that scientifically give credence to the idea that the experience of love is a physiological mandate for human existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a psychologist and bereaved father, The Only Reason to Live is a heart-breaking story of grief and despair experienced by the author and his wife during the first year following the accidential death of their only child. It describes the suffering that parents endure after a child dies and what each parent must face on holidays and special occasions thereafter. The author addresses the dark days of depression, sources of guilt and anger, living with grief, the nature of recovery, and why grief may never end. He reveals what helped him the most and what made him worse. In searching for understanding about death and afterlife, the author leads us on a journey through the major issues that disturb bereaved parents--how the child died, God's possible role, religious doubts, the question of afterlife, longing for the child, and peace of mind. The title of the book is based on the theme of the impasse--a place in despair where nothing helps us--and how to go on when there is no reason to live.

Book excerpt: “I am most grateful for two things: that I was born in North Korea, and that I escaped from North Korea.” - Yeonmi Park "One of the most harrowing stories I have ever heard - and one of the most inspiring." - The Bookseller “Park's remarkable and inspiring story shines a light on a country whose inhabitants live in misery beyond comprehension. Park's important memoir showcases the strength of the human spirit and one young woman's incredible determination to never be hungry again.” —Publishers Weekly In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea—and to freedom. Park confronts her past with a startling resilience. In spite of everything, she has never stopped being proud of where she is from, and never stopped striving for a better life. Indeed, today she is a human rights activist working determinedly to bring attention to the oppression taking place in her home country. Park’s testimony is heartbreaking and unimaginable, but never without hope. This is the human spirit at its most indomitable.
