Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reader in Physical Geography for Beginners This little book has been written with the thought that hitherto no one volume has been available in which the more important principles of Physical Geography have been brought together in a form to be used by beginners in the subject. The demand for such a treatment of Physical Geography grows larger daily, and in attempting to meet that demand the author has aimed to adapt the subject-matter to the needs, the abilities, and the interests of youthful readers. For that reason much attention has been given to human and other life conditions, in so far as they arc dependent upon, or determined by, the physical features of the world. Although it is believed that the facts are accurate as stated, and the generalizations tenable, there has been no attempt to write a complete text-book in Physical Geography. The thought has been rather to write a suggestive book that would leave the reader with a desire to go further and find more. Partly for that reason, and partly to give training in seeking information in other sources, no attention has been given to summaries of the physical features of the several continents. It is hoped that the book may be used as a reader in association with a text-book, and that details in reference to special topics will be sought under the description of the continents in such text-books, and, further, that an atlas may constantly be used in connection with the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography The educational progress of recent years has resulted in two profitable advances for the venerable subject of Geography. A strong feeling has been developed in favor of treating the subject as a whole more rationally than heretofore, and a wholesome desire has arisen in favor of introducing some of its scientific aspects more generally into the school course. A natural accompaniment of this progress has been a demand for text-books that shall present Physical Geography in its modern scientific development as well as in an elementary form. The present book, reduced from the author's Physical Geography, has been prepared to meet this demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Physical Geography Physical Geography as a school subject is concerned properly with those aspects of the Earth which determine or influence the life of man. It necessarily touches other departments of natural knowledge at many points, but in the following lessons the contributory sciences of astronomy, geology, meteorology, and physics are introduced only to the extent necessary to make clear some of the more obvious ways in which human life is affected by natural phenomena. Educationally regarded, Geography is a practical science practical, since it cannot be studied satisfactorily without the personal performance of observational and experimental exercises designed to lead the student to discover for himself fundamental facts and principles a science, in that the data with which it deals can be applied convincingly to man's needs only when their place in an orderly sequence of cause and effect is duly appreciated. The practical exercises set out at the beginning of the various sections of the book have been framed to lead each student to become - within the limits of the course of study - an independent observer able to reason intelligently on the facts he encounters. The descriptive text which follows each set of exercises provides a means of checking the results obtained and the conclusions arrived at by the student. It is urged that, although the descriptive portions of the volume will be found complete as a text-book, much of the educational value of their study will be lost by students who neglect the practical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Geography Certain preliminary matters which are often treated under the head of Physical Geography, but which do not properly belong to that subject, are omitted. It is assumed, for instance, that the reader understands the principles of the barometer and the thermometer, and that he has some acquaintance with the motions of the earth and the moon. But no one who has been through a general elementary course in science, such as is now given in most secondary schools, should meet with any difficulty. A few words as to the arrangement adopted may be of use, especially to teachers who may wish to know how far the book will be serviceable in their own classes. The book falls naturally into three sections dealing respectively with the atmosphere, the ocean and the land. Logically the study of physical geography may begin either with the atmosphere or with the land, and it is mainly a matter of convenience which of these courses should be followed. The two branches of the subject are to so large an extent independent that, if desired, the section on the land may be read before the section on the atmosphere. But the study of the atmosphere should always precede that of the ocean. In planning a course, however, there is one consideration that should be borne in mind. It is easy to arrange a useful series of laboratory lessons upon the atmosphere or the ocean; but in the case of the land comparatively little laboratory work is possible and the most valuable form of practical work consists of excursions in the field. Consequently there are advantages in dealing with the atmosphere during the winter months and with the land during the summer. But much depends upon the circumstances under which the course is given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physical Geography There are good textbooks on physical geography, but there are many teachers and school departments not satisfied with any of them. The author has endeavored to meet the require ments of these teachers as far as such needs could be ascertained. With a subject as broad as physical geography there will al ways be lack of uniformity in the manner of presentation, as well (as in the subject matter. The subject is one which is undergoing many changes, and it is possible that both the teachers and the subject may be ahead of present textbooks in many particulars. Every class in physical geography should have more or less laboratory and field work associated with the textbook. One of the functions of the textbook not the only one, by any means is to serve as a handbook, which the pupil studies as an aid in the interpretation of what he sees in the labora tory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Physical Geography This book has been written in the belief that physical geography is not only interesting and valuable in its sub ject matter, but is capable, when properly presented, of developing a scientific habit of mind. No attempt is made to discuss all the physical features of the earth, or those of any special region. The best type forms are selected and treated with sufficient fullness to give a clear and definite picture. From a study of the type general laws are developed, and the student is thus provided with a key for the solution of geographical problems wherever they may arise. Each topic is treated inductively. The essential facts are first given, and the student is then guided to a knowledge of their causes, significance, and results. This plan makes it possible to avoid in some degree the vague generalizations which are characteristic of most text-books. The student is in possession of a sufficient number of facts to enable him to see the basis and appreciate the value of the generalizations which follow. A large number of realistic exercises are introduced which appeal to the actual or possible experience of the student. They are designed not for the purpose of discovery but of realization, and to give some idea of the methods and possibilities of geo graphic research. These exercises include both field and laboratory work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography Nearly eight years ago the author published his Elementary Physical Geography, which was followed, two years later, by his First Book of Physical Geography, really a presentation, in briefer and more elementary form, of the matter contained in the earlier book. The growth of the science of physical geography, which has been little short of marvelous, the rapid advance in rank which the subject has won for itself in the schools, and the new ideas and new methods of presentation which have come to the author, have, for several years, made him desirous of undertaking a revision of one or both of his texts. When, however, this desire was given concrete form, and systematic attention was paid to the nature of the revision, it became evident that it would mean, not merely a revision, not even a mere rewriting, but a complete destruction of the old book and the construction of an entirely new book, different in plan, in scope, and, in many respects, in subject-matter. Then, for the first time, arose the idea that, since it would be a new book in fact, it would be better to issue it as such than as a new book under an old title. One important reason for reaching this decision was the fact that both the Elementary and First Book are in wide use. A field for them evidently exists, and it appears hardly wise to destroy absolutely that for which there is a demand. Twelve editions of the Elementary have been published and fifteen of the First Book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreations in Physical Geography: Or the Earth as It Is ON a former occasion, we laid before our readers a concise view of Geology, or the Earth in its former condition; the object of the present volume is to offer a general outline of the earth AS IT is. Geology may be compared to Ancient History, around which distance of time and partial obscurity throw the halo of classical interest. Physical geography, on the other hand, resembles Modern History, or rather, perhaps, records of daily recurring events - events in which our own personal interests are concerned. And should it be thought that our present subject does not possess the peculiar charm with which antiquity invests the science of Geo logy, it will be found, that it does not yield to that, or to any other, in importance, or in the interesting views it unfolds. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it.
