Book excerpt: This paper is an attempt to investigate the relationship between the level of economic development and the rate of urbanization for various countries by looking at the current process of change in the percentage of a society's population that is urban. From the literature on urban growth two different models for this relationship are developed. The first model is based upon the traditional emphasis in urban literature on the relationship between a society's level of urbanization and its level of economic development. Starting with a predicted relationship, we derive a model for the change in the level of urbanization over time using simple calculus. The second model expands upon this basic model by adding factors which have been proposed as relevant to the process of urbanization by the so-called "overurbanization" literature. By means of a multiple regression analysis of cross-cultural data on selected variables, the two models are tested to determine which better describes the rate of urbanization. While the model derived from the traditional approach using economic development alone does not satisfactorily predict rate of urbanization, the addition of factors proposed by the "overurbanization" literature to the model significantly improves the fit. These factors thus deserve consideration in further studies of the urbanization process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the late Vibhooti Shukla's writings on urbanization and economic development covering a vast canvas of interconnected issues. Her pioneering analysis with Indian data strongly indicates that the positive correlation between productivity and city sizes holds for India as well as for developed countries. In a well-knit framework, Dr Shukla addresses the problem of city size and the implications for industrial dispersal policies and the phenomenon of rural-urban migrations. She goes on to discuss the spatial dimension of rural non-farm employment, infrastructure investment and the government's role in these. It is her concern with policy issues which takes her to the subject of infrastructure investment, especially its spatial dimension. Dr Shukla demonstrates that better water supply, asphalt roads and increased drainage capacity can have a great impact on productivity. Her essays underline the fact that economic infrastructure is not enough. Social infrastructure, such as investment in health and education, not only creates a healthier, enlightened population but can result in higher industrial productivity.

Book excerpt: "The relationship between economic development and urbanization is a fundamental one which always features strongly in any analysis of the urbanization process in the developing world. First published in 1990, this wide-ranging collection of recent and original research studies focuses on urban economic growth at various levels of urban and national development. The contributions range from studies of peripheral states, such a Fiji or Malaysia, to countries of the so-called semi-periphery, such as Spain, South Africa, and Northern Australia. In addition to this broad geographic base, the authors cover a variety of themes within the general framework of urban economic development, from the provision of base services such as housing and food, to the functional preservation of historic cores, and the impact of economic change on family structure. How do we know that "but for the incentives" the development would not have occurred? How important is "quality of life" in location decisions and local economic development? Is industry targeting a viable economic development strategy? This book tackles these and many other significant questionsùfrom more than one perspective. Dilemmas of Urban Economic Development assesses the "state of the art" of the field of urban economic development. Each chapter addresses a particularly pertinent issue in economic development. Following each chapter are commentariesùone written by an academic addressing research methodology and the other by a practitioner addressing both the question and the evidence. The chapters are concluded with the author of each chapter responding directly to the issues raised by the commentators. The result is a productive dialogue between academics, practitioners, and citizens concerned with economic development.

Each chapter is logically connected with the preceding chapters, providing a general overview of income distribution and its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of cities in most of the developing economies is the single largest factor influencing imbalances in economic development. The different urbanization levels reflect different degree of economic development. By 2050, half of India's population is likely to be living in cities and cities estimated contribution to Gross Domestic Product will be 75 percent by 2020. Much needs to be done urgently to transform our cities into livable urban spaces, if our cities are not to crumble further under the weight of teeming millions. In the tide of rapid urbanization in the country, urban development and governance has become a matter of vital importance, in our national economy. To govern Indian growing cities for promoting better quality of life of the people seems to be one of the biggest challenges in the twenty first century. Urban governance has to improve dramatically if our cities are to be revived and readied to absorb new migrants. The present urban governance model is unlikely to help our cities need to be governed differently and that calls for a new political culture of urbanity and citizen friendly administration. Financial and economic future of our urban areas will largely rest on how they are managed. Keeping this in mind, this publication familiarizes the reader, urban managers and economist towards understanding the role of urbanization in national economy and to suggest solutions to the challenges thrown up by this phenomenon. It seeks to describe and analyze problems and the response of the concerned urban management institutions in managing them and attempts to define the guidelines in search of their solutions. The study is divided into six chapters, each dealing with different aspects. After the introduction, second chapter examines various dimensions of urbanizations and its impact. The third chapter examines the interrelationship between urbanization and economic development. In fourth chapter institutional set-up and urban management are discussed in details. Fifth chapter deals with strategies and policy options suggested and finally in the sixth chapter conclusions are reported. The book will be of special interest to the policy makers, researchers, urban managers and development agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines long-term structural changes and the broad impact on economic development in regional comparative perspectives. The book analyzes data across Africa, Asia and Latin America. It looks at key variables of productivity growth, industrialization, poverty, urbanization, and employment. This book is concerned with understanding structural change dynamics and how it affects job creation, living standards, and the efficiency of productive cities through manufacturing productivity growth that benefits majority of citizens. With empirical evidence from a selected number of developing countries including China, India, Brazil, Nigeria and South Africa, the book attempts to present the considerable structural changes of these countries over the last few decades. It highlights that growth without the expected job creation is one of the distinct features of growth in emerging and developing countries. It suggests that countries may well record economic growth, whether through within sector productivity increase or through structural change, but this may not necessarily lead to employment, an important concern for long-term development.
