Yet even in the face of adversity he is chosen to live by the word of God, not by his will but by a mystery that dumbfounds the wisdom of man. Can one day make the difference? Faith is the evidence, patience is a virtue and suspense is the attraction. Weaved in a vast arena with vivid scenarios from four continents he reveals an epic voyage of courage and hope in a quest for the reason behind his existence. Cephas is the man and life is a mystery. What is the missing link...

Book excerpt: This book is far and away the most lyrical one Ive ever writt en.Dawn begins about a month before Ant Man ends. So chronologically Ant Man comes fi rst followed by this Dawn Peyote book andthen its Stewart Coates, one two threemy first thirty some years of being a nutshell, huh. Dawn Peyote, hmnn, its difficult to summarize what I was trying to say way back seven, maybe even eight years ago. Theres straight narrat ves but mixed in in extreme doses are stream of consciousness jazzy lines, like Kerouac I suppose, who was my main fountainhead at the time back Zen. I was a much more dreamy creature, more vague and unsure, rolling with the night waves, when writi ngthis book. I just wrote prett y much anything that popped into my mind and heart, theres no self-censorship whatsoever with this one, like dominoes laid up all random yet revealing the precision of my feelings my confusions and my loves and hates, even. It was the fi rst book Id writt en totally on a computer too, which felt more smooth and classical compared to the electric percussion electric typewriter, you know? Dawn Peyote is a very searching voyage. Searching within to glean the true essence of my individual being, being tossed about in the unknowable ocean ways of societi es both secret and overt. The war on the Middle East was just starti ng up when I was into writing this book, opinions were flying all over the map, religion I found thinly veiled the war-monger attitudes of many in this provincial town. The flower of justice, nonetheless, grows where you least expect it.

Book excerpt: D. H. Lawrence expected The Rainbow to have 'a bit of a fight' before it was accepted, but 'The fight will have to be made, that is all'. It was suppressed, just over a month after publication, in November 1915. The American publisher would make thirteen further cuts and 'dribble out' the book quietly. In 1930 the British government would again consider suppressing a new printing of The Rainbow. Professor Mark Kinkead-Weekes gives the composition history and collates the surviving states of the text to assess the damage done to Lawrence's novel, and to provide a text as close to that which the author wrote as is now possible. The final manuscript, revisions in the typescript and the first edition are recorded in full in the textual apparatus so the reader can follow the novel's development and evaluate what outside interference may have done to it. Also included are Explanatory notes to historical references and allusions, and an interior chronology of the book itself.

Book excerpt: The Rainbow tells the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, a dynasty of farmers and craftsmen who live in the east Midlands of England, on the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The book covers a period from the 1840s to 1905, and shows how the love relationships of the Brangwens change against the backdrop of the increasing industrialization of Britain. The first central character, Tom Brangwen, is a farmer whose experience of the world does not stretch beyond these two counties; while the last, Ursula, his granddaughter, studies at university and becomes a teacher in the progressively urbanized, capitalist and industrial world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 2017 and early 2018, South Africa and Zimbabwe both experienced rapid and unexpected political transitions. In Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, the only leader the country had ever known, was replaced in a “soft coup” by his erstwhile vice-president, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Over a twelve-day period in February 2018, South African president Jacob Zuma was prematurely forced from office by his former deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa. The widespread popular rejoicing that accompanied their arrival compounded the shock of these sudden transitions. New Leaders, New Dawns? explores these political transitions and the way they were received. Contributors consider how the former liberation heroes Mugabe and Zuma could have fallen so low; the underlying reasons for their ouster; what happened to their liberation movements turned ruling parties; and, perhaps most importantly, what the rise to power of Ramaphosa and Mnangagwa foreshadowed. Bringing together fourteen leading international scholars of southern Africa, and adopting a political economy framework, this volume argues that the changes in leadership are welcome, but insufficient. While the time had come for Zuma and Mugabe to go, there is little in the personal histories or early policy actions of Ramaphosa and Mnangagwa that suggests they will be capable of addressing the profound social, economic, and political problems both countries face. New Leaders, New Dawns? reveals that despite what these new leaders may have promised, a “new dawn” has not yet arrived in southern Africa.

Book excerpt: When three women die of “natural causes” in London and the West Country, there appears to be no connection—or reason to suspect foul play. But Scotland Yard Superintendent Richard Jury has other ideas, and before long he’s following his keen police instincts all the way to Santa Fe, New Mexico. There, in the company of a brooding thirteen-year-old girl and her pet coyote, he mingles with an odd assortment of characters and tangles with a twisted plot that stretches from England to the American Southwest. And while his good friend Melrose Plant pursues inquires in London, Jury delves deeper into the more baffling elements of the case, discovering firsthand what the guide books don’t tell you; that the Land of Enchantment is also a landscape ripe with tragedy, treachery, and murder.
