Book Synopsis The Rats of Hamelin by : Adam McCune
Download or read book The Rats of Hamelin written by Adam McCune and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In that scented, touch-filled Pipeworld, where notes speak clear as words, where connections are thick and countless, I felt the chaining up and circling together of other traces in my head. And as the Pipe amplified all sounds and souls, including mine, I heard my mind echoing: the mission is dead- No rat-kill, no reward, no liberation. No home, no Hofmanns, no Klara- It was all an illusion." The Rats of Hamelin blends history and fantasy to reshape the hazy legend of the pied piper. After six years as a piper's apprentice, Hannes sets out on the mission that will make him a master in the guild. His orders seem simple enough: rid Hamelin of a plague of rats and use the reward money for a charitable cause. Simple indeed, until he discovers that the real rats of Hamelin aren't the ones scurrying underfoot. Unsure who to count among his friends- the mayor's beautiful daughter, generous businessman, a precocious little girl? Hannes struggles against deadly enemies and thoughtless allies. Every step he takes comes down to a deceptively simple choice: when to show mercy and when to bring justice. Readers will be thrilled with this first novel by Adam and Keith McCune. This father-son team bring a wealth of linguistic and literary knowledge to bear on their retelling of the famous Pied Piper fairy tale. The story naturally lends itself to reflection on the themes of law and mercy, as well as the sometimes-complex nature of the relationship between fathers and sons.

Book Synopsis Discrete Subgroups of Semisimple Lie Groups by : Gregori A. Margulis
Download or read book Discrete Subgroups of Semisimple Lie Groups written by Gregori A. Margulis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-02-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete subgroups have played a central role throughout the development of numerous mathematical disciplines. Discontinuous group actions and the study of fundamental regions are of utmost importance to modern geometry. Flows and dynamical systems on homogeneous spaces have found a wide range of applications, and of course number theory without discrete groups is unthinkable. This book, written by a master of the subject, is primarily devoted to discrete subgroups of finite covolume in semi-simple Lie groups. Since the notion of "Lie group" is sufficiently general, the author not only proves results in the classical geometry setting, but also obtains theorems of an algebraic nature, e.g. classification results on abstract homomorphisms of semi-simple algebraic groups over global fields. The treatise of course contains a presentation of the author's fundamental rigidity and arithmeticity theorems. The work in this monograph requires the language and basic results from fields such as algebraic groups, ergodic theory, the theory of unitary representatons, and the theory of amenable groups. The author develops the necessary material from these subjects; so that, while the book is of obvious importance for researchers working in related areas, it is essentially self-contained and therefore is also of great interest for advanced students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1945, and thirteen-year-old Gwen has been a prisoner at the Weihsien Internment Camp in northern China for nearly two and a half years. Gwen is one of 140 children who were enrolled at a boarding school in Chefoo when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded China. Life in the camp is difficult. There is not enough food or water, and even the children are forced to do hard labor. But Miss E., one of their teachers from Chefoo, has come up with an unusual scheme: she will follow the Girl Guide Code, treating Gwen and her friends as if they are part of a Girl Guide troop. Girl Guides promise not only to stay positive in the most challenging situations but also to do good turns, meaning they must be kind to others without any expectation of reward. Gwendolyn hopes that when she grows up, she will be as courageous and optimistic as Miss E. But then Gwen learns that Miss E. is not as full of answers as she seems, and she realizes that in order to protect a friend, she will have to do something that could never be considered a good turn.

Book Synopsis The Peculiar Case of the Missing Mondrian by : K.J.Heritage
Download or read book The Peculiar Case of the Missing Mondrian written by K.J.Heritage and published by Sygasm. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine if your life was spent at the mercy of coincidence… A missing multi-million-pound painting, an insistent ex who won’t take no for an answer, and a ruthless media Baron who always gets his way. What could possibly go right? Serial life avoider and semi-professional layabout, Jim Riven, is not particularly good at anything, unless lying in bed all day, ignoring his front door and his phone, and then going down the pub every evening, could be described as a life skill. But Jim Riven did have one particular talent—or what he referred to as ‘his curse’—that involved unnecessary and unwanted coincidences, or ‘not so serendipitous happenchances’ as he also liked to call them. Happenchances that had dogged his life ever since he could remember. When Jim Riven’s ex-girlfriend, a rather spoilt society girl and daughter of all round international media rogue, Roo Osbourne, turns up unexpectedly one morning to elicit his help in finding a stolen painting by the grandfather of modern art, Piet Mondrian, Jim Riven’s life is turned upside down. And, for Jim Riven, upside down was not the right way up at all. And so started a series of the most startling coincidences, placing him at the centre of a fascinating and complex mystery.
