Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High Road of Song: Book Two, Part Songs The sine qua non of school music is, Of course, s1ng1ng. Whatever else Of musm activities may have to be omitted, no child should miss the pleas ure, the stimulation, and the training provided by joining with his fellows in song. (from Programme of Studies, Department of Education for Ontario.) The High Road of Song, Book I I provides an abundance of two and three-part song material for class singing in Grades V to VIII, and for public performance. For several reasons it is best to defer extensive part singing until the pupil has formed safe vocal habits and is able to read and sing one-part music with comparative facility. NO normal child should be allowed, much less required, to sing the lower part exclusively, though all should learn to sing a second part. Children who are inexperienced in music will find difficulty in singing one part while listening to another. Part singing is an ear problem as well as a sight-singing one. Rounds are especially useful in developing the power to sing in the presence of an other melody. The round should be sung again and again as a unison song until the children are thoroughly familiar with it; then it may be attempted as a round. At the same time, short tone drills should be given'from dicta tion or from the blackboard. At all times children should be encouraged to sing easily, without forcing the voice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Music Reader Tnn child's first year at school is a very important one, for then deep and enduring impressions are made on the mind. Music is one of the most potent of early influences; hence it is wise to teach such songs at this stage as will best contribute to the, future as well as the present enjoyment of the child. A pleasing melody is appreciated by a child quite as much as by an older person; hence it has been the aim of the author of this series to select and compose songs for the First Reader, that. Both in the melodic construction of the music and in the sentiment of the words, are best adapted to please as well as instruct children. The music in this number, where no composer's name is given, is the composi tion of the author of this series. The illustrations, it is believed, will greatly enhance the child's interest in the songs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Club, CBC Books, and The Rumpus. And a Winter's Most Anticipated Book by Vanity Fair and The Week Starred Reviews: Kirkus and Booklist "Warm, immediate and intensely personal."—New York Times How does one pay homage to A Tribe Called Quest? The seminal rap group brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces such as The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Seventeen years after their last album, they resurrected themselves with an intense, socially conscious record, We Got It from Here . . . Thank You 4 Your Service, which arrived when fans needed it most, in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib digs into the group’s history and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself. The result is as ambitious and genre-bending as the rap group itself. Abdurraqib traces the Tribe's creative career, from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Their work is placed in the context of the broader rap landscape of the 1990s, one upended by sampling laws that forced a reinvention in production methods, the East Coast–West Coast rivalry that threatened to destroy the genre, and some record labels’ shift from focusing on groups to individual MCs. Throughout the narrative Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact. Whether he’s remembering The Source magazine cover announcing the Tribe’s 1998 breakup or writing personal letters to the group after bandmate Phife Dawg’s death, Abdurraqib seeks the deeper truths of A Tribe Called Quest; truths that—like the low end, the bass—are not simply heard in the head, but felt in the chest.

The busy passerby may not pause long enough to catch the strains. He may hear only a con fused noise, because he cannot distinguish the chords of those near him. But the music is there, - often sweet notes of heavenly grandeur; again, sorrowful notes of grief and care. But each one is looking and longing for the time to come when he will be singing his masterpiece. Then he will break forth into the full notes of harmony. To one person this time may ever seem far in the future. Another may show by his actions that he alone is to make his dream a reality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Song-Roundels and Games During a number of years educators in all parts of our country have endeavored to make games more popular, and to some extent good results have been obtained. Games are played by children as well as adults in the numerous private and public gymnasiums and on the play grounds which city and school authorities have provided for the general public. In these gymnasiums and play grounds one finds children of various physical conditions, some strong and some weak, and it therefore fol lows that when games are played without system and supervision, the strong eventually become the main participants and the benefits which should be shared equally by all are reaped by the strong alone. It is, therefore, apparent that some one is needed to supervise, guide, and introduce games, and'to do this he must be interested in the work, must understand the games, and must have played them himself. And it is as a guide to these instructors that I have conceived the idea of arranging and composing 'the games found in this little book. The games herein contained are song-games, roundels (reigen), ac companied with vocal music, class, competitive, and antagonistic games. Some of the songs I translated from the German, others are original, but all are written to well known melodies. To some extent the games are graded, but, on the whole, I have left it to the judgment of the instructor to select those suitable for his purpose. The larger in number are for Soprano, Alto and Bass, but a few in four parts are interspersed. The compass of the parts is within the range of voices found in the upper grades. The music is interesting and it is drawn from many sources. The songs of classic and modern composers, patriotic songs and the folksongs of many coun tries will be found, and these songs are set to the poems of eminent authors. It is music which has stood the test of time, and lives because of its intrinsic worth. It will live in the memories of the children to-day as it has lived in the memories of their fathers. While the songs may be sung to syllable or to some vowel sound, and thus serve for practice in sight singing and voice training, pupils should be led to appreciate the human side of the music - to catch the spirit of the words, the melodies and the harmonies. They should be brought as much as it is possible into a sympathetic understanding of the moods of the folksongs, for a folksong expresses that which is common to all. They should also study the composers, especially the classicists. They will then carry with them as they leave school, not only tech nical skill, and a taste for that which is of genuine worth, but a knowledge of music and its relation to life which will afterwards grow by a process of natural accretion.
