Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kinetic equation for interplanetary cosmic rays is set up with the aid of weak plasma turbulence theory for an idealized radially symmetric model of the interplanetary magnetic field. As a starting point, this treatment invokes the Vlasov equation instead of the traditional Fokker-Planck equation. Quasilinear theory is applied to obtain a momentum diffusion equation, for the heliocentric frame of reference, which describes the interaction of cosmic rays with convecting magnetic irregularities in the solar wind plasma. Under restricted conditions, the well known equation of solar modulation can be obtained from the kinetic equation.

Book Synopsis Transport of Cosmic Rays in the Interplanetary Medium by : E. C. Roelof
Download or read book Transport of Cosmic Rays in the Interplanetary Medium written by E. C. Roelof and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By quasilinearization of the Liouville equation for a charged particle in an electromagnetic field combined with an ensemble average over field configurations, a transport equation is derived for the ensemble average particle-distribution function. The resulting integro-differential equation is rewritten in terms of a simpler characteristic function which, when found, gives the complete solution in terms of the particle orbits in the ensemble mean fields. With the appropriate approximations, the equation reduces to the Fokker-Planck form applied recently by Jokipii to galactic cosmic-ray modulation, and by the author to energetic solar-flare particle propagation. It is argued that the equation, although complicated, offers several advantages as a starting point for transport theory over the simpler but less appropriate Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann equations. Book Synopsis Physics of the Outer Heliosphere by : S. Grzedzielski
Download or read book Physics of the Outer Heliosphere written by S. Grzedzielski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume in the new COSPAR Colloquia series which will provide a forum for an in-depth discussion on selective topics of importance to the international community. The International Heliospheric Study (IHS) was initially approved by COSPAR in 1982 when it was anticipated that the study would centre on the ESA/NASA Ulysses spacecraft. This mission was delayed until October 1990, but it was decided to commence the study in 1986 in order to exploit the existence of the Pioneer 10 and 11 and the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft in the outer heliosphere. The primary purpose of Physics of the Outer Heliosphere is to study the three-dimensional structure of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field carried by it, the propagation of energetic solar particles throughout the heliosphere and the modulation of galactic cosmic rays by the heliosphere. This volume provides information for scientists interested in spectroscopic studies of the local interstellar medium, galactic and solar cosmic ray populations in the outer heliosphere and also plasma and magnetic field aspects of the distant solar wind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the averagetime interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication ofthe abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 17 contains literature published in 1976 and received before August 15, 1976; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech languageand supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy. We want to acknowledge valuable contributions to this vol ume by Zentralstelle fur Atomkernenergie-Dokumentation, Leopoldshafen, which supported our ab stracting service by sending us retrospective literature searches.

Book Synopsis Magnetic Helicity in Space and Laboratory Plasmas by : Michael R. Brown
Download or read book Magnetic Helicity in Space and Laboratory Plasmas written by Michael R. Brown and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1999-01-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 111. Using the concept of magnetic helicity, physicists and mathematicians describe the topology of magnetic fields: twisting, writhing, and linkage. Mathematically, helicity is related to linking integrals, which Gauss introduced in the 19th century to describe the paths of asteroids in the sky. In the late 1970s the concept proved to be critical to understand laboratory plasma experiments on magnetic reconnection, dynamos, and magnetic field relaxation. In the late 1980s it proved equally important in understanding turbulence in the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field. During the last five years interest in magnetic helicity has grown dramatically in solar physics, and it will continue to grow as observations of vector magnetic fields become increasingly sophisticated.
