Book excerpt: Laser-Doppler velocimeter measurements were made in the flow field of a stalled cascade of controlled-diffusion stator blades. Tests were conducted at 10 degrees of incidence above the design inlet-flow angle in order to verify previous measurements. A unique method of data presentation was offered to characterize the unsteady positive and negative velocities about their mean. Laser-sheet flow visualization was performed and showed the unsteadiness of the stalling phenomena within the blade row passages. Additionally, a leading-edge separation bubble was observed and reversed flow was measured within the bubble using the laser-Doppler anemometer. Power-spectral density and auto-correlation analysis results are presented. In parallel with the experimental measurements, a computational fluid-dynamics study was initiated in an attempt ultimately to predict stall. Viscous flow computations were completed at on-design and near-stall conditions. Pressure distributions, separation bubble re-attachment locations, and loss predictions were compared to previous experimental studies. Generally good agreement was obtained for on-design conditions with degradation in prediction nearing stall.

Book excerpt: A computer-integrated LDV system utilizing a Helium-Neon laser was designed, assembled and tested for use in the study of steady flow field quantities. All system elements were integrated to include a traverse mechanism, signal processing and conditioning, computer interface and display. The system was initially calibrated utilizing a rotating wheel of known velocity. Experimental flow measurement tests of the system were conducted across a conventional free jet flow and in the Naval Postgraduate School low speed wind tunnel. The flow field velocity measurements made in the wind tunnel were verified usin an existing pressure data acquisition station and a standard pitot static probe. Keywords: Laser doppler velocimetry.

Seiler Research Laboratory (FJSRL) at the U.S. Air Force Academy is conducting a comprehensive experimental research program to study unsteady, separated flows and, in particular, the dynamic stall of oscillating airfoils. The aim of this study is to achieve a clearer understanding into the physical mechanisms responsible for dynamic stall and to capitalize on these unique stall features by using them to improve the turn performance and maneuverability of flight vehicles. The objective of one phase of this experimental research program has been to adapt a general purpose Laser Doppler VElocimetry (LDV) two velocity component system to dynamic stall experiments in the Subsonic Wind Tunnel at the USAFA. The preliminary design of the LDV system, its special constraints and the characterization of system signal and noise parameters are described. Results presented for the initial operation of the LDV system demonstrate its performance capabilities. It has been observed that accurate measurements in the wind tunnel environment can be achieved only when optical noise produced by scattered laser light from wind tunnel surfaces is minimized. While the LDV system configuration satisfies all constraints related to the USAFA Subsonic Wind Tunnel geometry and is capable of accurate velocity measurements in the two-dimensional flow field surrounding an airfoil, a reconfiguration of the system is suggested to improve optical alignment procedures and overall system signal-to-noise ratio. Book excerpt: A new measurement technique is being developed by NASA to measure off-surface flow fields. This method, Doppler global velocimetry, will allow quantification of complex three-dimensional flow fields at video camera rates. The entire flow field structure within a selected plane is measured simultaneously rather than by scanned, point-by-point measurements using conventional laser velocimetry. To assess the capability of this new technique, velocity measurements of the vortical flow field above a thin 75-degree delta wing were made in the NASA Langley Basic Aerodynamics Research Tunnel. The operation of the system is described along with the techniques developed to process the output images. The results are then compared with similar measurements obtained using a three component laser velocimeter. Meyers, James F. Langley Research Center ...

Book excerpt: Experiments were performed on two simulated porous media made up of different packing arrangements of 0.5 inch lucite spheres between two lucite plates. A Newtonian oil was used as the fluid medium. A laser doppler velocimeter was chosen to monitor the velocity in the pore space and to determine the onset of turbulence. Velocity measurements in the pore space were made by detecting the doppler frequency shift of a laser light which was scattered by contaminant particles in the oi 1. The study successfully demonstrated the use of the velocimeter for interstitial velocity measurements over a range of flowrates. The results indicated that a porous medium should not be represented by a series of straight flow channels of varying cross sections. The flow geometry should include a curvilinear path of the fluid.

Book excerpt: The application of Doppler Global Velocimetry (DGV) to high-speed flows has its origins in the original development of the technology by Komine et al (1991). Komine used a small shop-air driven nozzle to generate a 200 m/s flow. This flow velocity was chosen since it produced a fairly large Doppler shift in the scattered light, resulting in a significant transmission loss as the light passed through the Iodine vapor. This proof-of-concept investigation showed that the technology was capable of measuring flow velocity within a measurement plane defined by a single-frequency laser light sheet. The effort also proved that velocity measurements could be made without resolving individual seed particles as required by other techniques such as Fringe- Type Laser Velocimetry and Particle Image Velocimetry. The promise of making planar velocity measurements with the possibility of using 0.1-micron condensation particles for seeding, Dibble et al (1989), resulted in the investigation of supersonic jet flow fields, Elliott et al (1993) and Smith and Northam (1995) - Mach 2.0 and 1.9 respectively. Meyers (1993) conducted a wind tunnel investigation above an inclined flat plate at Mach 2.5 and above a delta wing at Mach 2.8 and 4.6. Although these measurements were crude from an accuracy viewpoint, they did prove that the technology could be used to study supersonic flows using condensation as the scattering medium. Since then several research groups have studied the technology and developed solutions and methodologies to overcome most of the measurement accuracy limitations.

This method, Doppler global velocimetry, will allow qualification of complex three-dimensional flow fields at video camera rates. The entire flow field structure within a selected plane is measured simultaneously rather than by scanned, point-by-point measurements using conventional laser velocimetry. To assess the capability of this new technique, three component velocity measurements of the vortical flow field above a thin 75 degree delta wing were made in the NASA Langley Basic Aerodynamics Research Tunnel. Measurements were made of the flow field at the 70-percent chord locations at angles-of-attack of 20.5-and 40.0-degrees to investigate unburst and burst vortices. For comparison, previous fringe-type laser velocimeter measurements of the flow field at the same conditions are included.
