Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jesus a public figure? A political figure? Yes, according to Luke's gospel, Jesus was a Christ who was both public and political. Recent developments in the theory and practice of the study of space have provided tools to classify ancient social-spatial spheres with greater nuance and depth. A broad survey of literary and archaeological resources in the ancient world, as well as an in-depth look at Plutarch's Political Precepts and Philostratus's Life of Apollonius, reveals that the familiar dichotomy of public and private does not suffice to describe the Hellenistic-Roman milieu that shaped the author and audience of the third gospel. This study employs social-spatial analysis to explore how Luke uses the power of place to portray Jesus frequently engaging the unofficial public sphere and local politics, specifically in 18:35--19:43--the public healing of the blind beggar, the unexpected impact of Zacchaeus's hospitality, the political implications of the parable of the king and his subjects, and the publicity and politics of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. The result is an illuminating look at the overall spatial character of Luke's gospel, the development of Christianity in the latter half of the first century, and the role of place in contemporary Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public relations of "everything" takes the radical position that public relations is a profoundly different creature than a generation of its scholars and teachers have portrayed it. Today, it is clearly no longer limited, if it ever has been, to the management of communication in and between organizations. Rather, it has become an activity engaged in by everyone, and for the most basic human reasons: as an act of self-creation, self-expression, and self-protection. The book challenges both popular dismissals and ill-informed repudiations of public relations, as well as academic and classroom misconceptions. In the age of digitization and social media, everyone with a smart phone, Twitter and Facebook accounts, and the will and skill to use them, is in the media. The PR of everything – the ubiquitousness of public relations – takes a perspective that is less concerned with ideas of communication and information than with experience and drama, a way of looking at public relations inside out, upside down and from a micro rather than a macro level. Based on a combination of the research of PR practice and critical-thinking analysis of theory, and founded in the author’s extensive corporate experience, this book will be invaluable reading for scholars and practitioners alike in Public Relations, Communications and Social Media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now also available as eBook Directive 2004/17/EC governs the rules, provisions, and procedures entailed in public procurement contracts awarded by EU Member States in the water, energy, transport, and postal services sectors. In the course of the eight-year (1996and–2004) gestation period of an EC public procurement policy that would meet the challenges of a globalised economy, it became clear that these utilities required a legislative framework distinct from the general coordination of award procedures that finally emerged as Directive 2004/18/EC. This book on the and‘Utilitiesand’ Directive 2004/17/EC is a companion to an earlier volume on the legislative history of Directive 2004/18/EC. This new volume gathers in one place all the relevant documents that led to the adoption of the Utilities Directive. In great detail this legislative history reveals such crucial elements and outcomes as the following: ports and airports as transport hubs of solid fuels; treatment of relevant WTO Agreements; confidentiality and security; works and service concessions; resale and leasing provisions; competition; communication of technical specifications; tax. environmental, and labour obligations; time limits; and design contests. Introducing the book are excerpts that give a general picture of the reasons that led to the intention to replace the earlier procurement directive for the utilities sectors (93/38/EEC). Then follow excerpts that give an insight into the drafting of the recitals in the Preamble, the articles, and the annexes. The book concludes with a chronological overview of the legislative documents associated with Directive 2004/17/EC and a Keyword Index. Along with its companion volume on Directive 2004/18/EC, this important book will be a powerful resource for lawyers and policymakers engaged in the practice and development of European procurement law. It will also provide both practitioners and researchers working in the area of European procurement law with an incomparable desktop reference on the Utilities Directive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dr. Alexander . . . brings to this book an acute understanding of both why our cherished form of government—and those who serve us in the civil service—appears to be under such unrelenting attack and how we, as citizens, should and must respond.” —from the foreword by Congressman Elijah E. Cummings When those we elect descend into partisan tribalism, criminal malfeasance, and emulation of foreign autocracies and oligarchies, Cedric Alexander says it is the unelected apolitical "fourth branch" of government—our nation's public servants, civil servants, and first responders—who must save the nation. Alexander, a former deputy mayor, police chief, and CNN commentator, argues that these people do not constitute a nefarious "deep state" pursuing a hidden agenda. They are the analysts, scientists, lawyers, accountants, educators, consultants, enforcers of regulations, and first responders of every kind who keep the country running and its people safe. Alexander recounts the evolution of the professional civil service as an antidote to widespread cronyism, offers examples of how it has served as a bulwark against powerful corrupting influences, and describes the role it can play in bringing our badly divided society together. To the general public, many of these 22 million people remain invisible and their contributions hidden. But now is the time to make the invisible visible.
