Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology's approach to sexual orientation has long had its foundation in essentialism, which undergirds psychological theory and research as well as clinical practice and applications of psychology to public policy issues. It is only recently that psychology as a discipline has begun to entertain social constructivism as an alternative approach. Based on the belief that thoughtful dialogue can engender positive change, Conversations about Psychology and Sexual Orientation explores the implications for psychology of both essentialist and social constructionist understandings of sexual orientation. The book opens with an introduction presenting basic theoretical frameworks, followed by three application sections dealing with clinical practice, research and theory, and public policy. In each, the discussion takes the form of a conversation, as the authors first consider essentialist and constructionist approaches to the topic at hand. These thoughts, in turn, are followed by responses from distinguished scholars chosen for their expertise in a particular area. By providing an array of comments and thoughtful responses to topics surrounding psychology's approaches to sexual orientation, this valuable study sheds new light on the contrasting views held in the field and the ways in which essentialist and constructionist understandings may be applied to specific practices and policies.

This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over "nature versus nature" continues over the causes of homosexuality. Is there a gay gene? Is there something about the way a child is raised that can "turn" her gay? Or is being gay simply a "choice"? Taking a look at the major genetic, biological, and psychological theories of the origins of homosexuality, this book asks questions about gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation that are at the center of gay people's sense of identity and their struggle for civil rights and acceptance by society. While for centuries homosexuality was considered a mental illness, a moral failure, or a biological disorder, gay people in the twenty-first century have the evidence of scientific research and their authentic experiences of happy and fulfilling lives to support the pride and sense of community that is their rightful place in the modern world.

Download or read book The Psychology of Sexual Orientation, Behavior, and Identity written by Louis Diamant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-10-18 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of research, issues, and theories relating to sexual orientation, behavior, and identity by experts in various disciplines is unique in providing both historical perspectives and a synthesis of the recent advances in understanding homosexuality and heterosexuality. Drawing from biological and psychological research, this handbook critically reviews the major theories about sexual orientation and examines each theory on the basis of empirical support. One section summarizes recent developments in genetic and neuroanatomic research. Another section discusses problems with sexual performance among heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual persons. A third section provides overviews of clinical disorders or sexual deviations. Various chapters clarify the distinction between sexual disorders, such as pedophilia, and sexual variations, such as homosexuality. Chapters also examine important social issues relevant to sexual orientation, such as disability, prejudice, aging, and gender roles. Experts address the continuing controversy over the feasibility of altering sexual orientation; new developments in treating different types of problems; and changing perspectives today. This handbook is designed for the use of educators, students, and researchers in the social and behavioral sciences.
Book Synopsis Future Orientation by : Rachel Seginer
Download or read book Future Orientation written by Rachel Seginer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By contemporary I mean a present with an anticipated future, for we must do our best to overcome clinical habits which make us assume that we have done our part if we have clari?ed the past. (Erikson, 1968, pp. 30–31). The scope of time ahead which in?uences present behavior, and is therefore to be regarded as part of the present life-space, increases during development. This change in time perspective is one of the most fundamental facts of development. Adolescence seems to be a period of particularly deep change in respect to time perspective. (Lewin, 1939, p. 879). I chose to open this book with two excerpts from Erikson’s and Lewin’s writings because they indicate that future orientation has had its deep roots in psychol- ical thinking, and call readers’ attention to the long standing interest in two f- damental issues: the motivational power of constructed future images and their development across age. More speci?cally, Erikson and Lewin’s writings und- score the importance of future thinking for in?uencing present behavior tendencies, and point out that the ability to think about the future and realize the “scope of time ahead” increase with age, and reach a special developmental signi?cance in adolescence.
