This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In preparation for half a century, the Pentland Dictionary marks a milestone in the scientific study of one of the major language families of North America; Algonquian languages range from Powhatan or Delaware in the east to Arapaho, Blackfoot and Cheyenne in the West and including such major Canadian languages as Cree and Ojibwe. David Pentland, who died in 2022 before his magnum opus could be brought into print. In a life-long research program of admirable intellectual coherence, Pentland not only drew on the structural and geographic diversity of these languages and their remarkable time-depth and historical documentation but also made exemplary use of the analytic tools of synchronic linguistics, comparative reconstruction and ethnology. A towering figure in the field of Algonquian Studies, he was amongst a small number of experts equally at home in the analysis of the languages still spoken today and the rich documentary record that has been preserved in the archives over the past four centures. The more than 45,000 entries reconstructed for the postulated Proto-Algonquian, the ancestral language from which all the modern languages are descended, are supported by the earliest documentary records for the various Algonquian languages. In addition, this publication also includes an English index, constructed under the general direction of Will Oxford by Laurel-Anne Hasler, one of the most accomplished and experienced scholars in this field. The comparative and historical dictionary of the Algonquian languages is a monu-mental achievement unmatched for any other language family of the New World."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Miami-Illinois Language reconstructs the language spoken by the Miami and the Illinois Native Americans. During the latter half of the seventeenth century both Native communities lived in the region to the south of Lake Michigan in present-day Illinois and Indiana. The French and Indian War, followed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by massive influxes of white settlers into the Ohio River Valley, proved disastrous for both Native groups. Reduced in number by warfare and disease, the Illinois (now called the Peorias) along with half of the Miamis relocated first to Kansas and then to northeast Oklahoma, while the other half of the Miamis remained in northern Indiana. ø The Miami and the Illinois Native Americans speak closely related dialects of a language of the Algonquian language family. Linguist David J. Costa reconstructs key elements of their language from available historical sources, close textual analysis of surviving stories, and comparison with related Algonquian languages. The result is the first overview of the Miami-Illinois language.

This book was released on 1994-07-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picard's methodology has three stages: establishing the sound correspondences between a source language (such as Proto-Algonkian) and a target language (such as Arapaho); exploiting the concept of naturalness in phonological change to the fullest in order to construct working hypotheses as to what the most likely historical processes could have been, and to determine in a nonarbitrary fashion which processes could have taken place simultaneously; and ordering these processes in accordance with the various feeding, bleeding, counterfeeding, and counterbleeding relations that exist between a great many pairs of diachronic processes. Picard applies his theoretical assumptions to a detailed development and analysis of the phonological changes that have taken place between Proto-Algonkian and modern Arapaho. In addition he provides a segment-by-segment derivation of over two hundred lexical items, showing exactly which sound changes have applied in each case. Principles and Methods in Historical Phonology is a valuable addition to historical studies of Algonkian languages and will be of particular interest to Algonkianists as well as linguists in general.

Book excerpt: A compilation of published ethnobotanical data pertaining to all of the Algonkian speaking peoples of eastern North America and field data concerning the Algonquin bands of the Ottawa River drainage and the Cree bands of the St. Maurice drainage of western Quebec. These data help illuminate past subsistence patterns, the seasonal movements of the Algonquin, and the relationship between Algonquin bands and other Algonkian speakers. They also indicate that the Algonquin previously enjoyed a subarctic subsistence orientation similar to that of the Cree and other northerners in contrast to their Iroquoian neighbours thus necessitating a redefinition of the eastern subarctic culture area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bytown's early years - as military outpost and lumber town - did not presage greatness. Yet this rough little town (renamed Ottawa in 1855) did not remain insignificant, for geography and politics soon combined to place it at centrestage as Canada's national capital. Ottawa's fascinating story is recounted with skill and wit in John H. Taylor's Ottawa: An Illustrated History. Taylor tells this story in all its variations - the life of the French and the English, the poor and the rich; the politics of city hall and Parliament Hill; the social lives of Ottawans. Crisp and colourful, Ottawa: An Illustrated History focuses on the history of the city's relationship with its landlord - the federal government - but it also does more. It weaves together, for the first time, all the complex strands that over the years have shaped Ottawa's identity. Ottawa: An Illustrated History is handsomely illustrated by 150 historical photographs and by a dozen original maps depicting the city's geographical evolution.
