Religious pluralism is a fact in North American society today. More than at any other time, adherents of different religious traditions live, work, and play side by side. Yet the fact of religious pluralism creates a tension for a large number of Christians. At the same time they have realized that Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, and members of many other religious groups have become their neighbors, they are also aware of Christian teachings that seem to exclude these groups. Statements such as "no one comes to the Father except through me," and "outside the church there is no salvation," seem to imply that these new neighbors are not part of the family of God, or at least that their religious beliefs and practices are not viable avenues to human wholeness and salvation. In this insightful and irenic work, Marjorie Hewitt Suchocki demonstrates that Christians need not ignore, nor even compromise, the teachings of the gospel in order to accept and rejoice in religious pluralism. She argues that the Christian doctrines of creation, incarnation, the image of God, and the reign of God make the diversity of religions necessary. Without such diversity the rich and deep community of humanity that is the goal of the Christian gospel cannot be realized. Along the way Suchocki rejects the exclusivist claim that there can be no relationship with God apart from the church, and the inclusivist idea that Christianity is the highest expression of the search for God, with other religions possessing in part that which Christians possess in full. She argues instead for a pluralist position, insisting on a full recognition of the distinctive gifts that all of the religious traditions bring to the human table.

Book excerpt: According to Schubert M. Ogden, the fundamental construction of an adequate Christian theology revolves around the twin criteria of appropriateness and credibility. However, Ogden's own employment of these criteria in constructing a Christian theology of religious diversity or religious pluralism is inadequate. Through an explanation and evaluation of Ogden's approach to doing theology, both in terms of the criteria of appropriateness and credibility and the three phases of historical, hermeneutical, and philosophical theology, and through the employment of this approach in evaluating Ogden's own position of Pluralistic-Inclusivism in regard to constructing a Christian theology of religious pluralism, I will argue that Ogden's position of Pluralistic- Inclusivism fails as an adequate Christian theology of religious pluralism because of its inappropriate, representative Christology. I will further argue that the inappropriateness of Ogden's representative Christology stems for an overemphasis of the criterion of credibility in his interpretation of the formal norm of apostolic witness and from a more fundamental overemphasis of the criterion of credibility in his approach to doing theology. From there, I will argue, towards the end of outlining work that must be done in this area, that a more adequate construction of a Christian theology of religious pluralism depends, fundamentally, on a more balanced employment of the criteria of appropriateness and credibility, which will in turn result in a more appropriate, constitutive Christology.

Reflecting on the reality of religious pluralism as the governing horizon of theology today, it proposes that the very notion of religious truth needs to be rethought. In a dialogue with Derrida it argues that the effects of dissemination and differance have indeed unsettled any project of pinning down truth in a definitive, substantial way, while at the same time it defends the objectivity of concretely situated truth-judgments as more than merely an effect of the play of language. The Buddhist conceptions of emptiness, conventional truth, and skillful means--further explored in Philosophie occidentale et concepts bouddhistes (2011)--allow a positive religious significance to be found in this mutation in the status of Christian truth.
