Book Synopsis A Proposed Index for Measuring Ionospheric Scintillation by : H. E. Whitney
Download or read book A Proposed Index for Measuring Ionospheric Scintillation written by H. E. Whitney and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signals from radio star sources and satellites are regularly used for studying ionospheric irregularities. Amplitude and phase deviations can be imposed on the signals from these sources as they traverse the ionosphere. A parameter frequently used to describe the magnitude of this scintillation effect is scintillation index. An experiment was designed to correlate various methods of making scintillation measurements; observations were made at 40 MHz using the ionospheric beacon, S-66. It is shown that when the law of the receiver detector is known, a conversion method allows comparison of data and statistics on scintillation index. A simplified method of scaling scintillation index is described. The accuracy of the simplified method is determined by a comparison with measurements of scintillation index by machine computation.
Book Synopsis Notes on the Relationship of Scintillation Index to Probability Distributions and Their Uses for System Design by : H. E. Whitney
Download or read book Notes on the Relationship of Scintillation Index to Probability Distributions and Their Uses for System Design written by H. E. Whitney and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characterization of ionosphere scintillations in terms of scintillation index is discussed. Scintillation index cannot be directly applied to the design of systems that use transionospheric propagation. The relationships of scintillation index to system design parameters, cumulative amplitude distributions, and fade levels, are shown. The determination of a spectral index is explained and its use for extrapolating the results of ionosphere scintillation measurements to a desired frequency is shown.
Book Synopsis The Propagation of Radio Waves by : K. G. Budden
Download or read book The Propagation of Radio Waves written by K. G. Budden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-08-04 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the ionosphere and the magnetosphere, and the theory of their effect on radio waves. It includes accounts of some mathematical topics now widely used in this study, particularly W. K. B. approximations, Airy integral functions and integration by steepest descents. The subject is divided into ray theory and full wave theory. Ray theory is useful for high frequencies when the ionosphere is treated as a horizonally stratified medium. The discussion of the magnetosphere, whose structure is more complicated, includes an account of whistlers and ion cyclotron whistlers. The book has been planned both for final year undergraduates and as a reference book for research. It is suitable as a course book on radio propagation for students of physics or electrical engineering or mathematics. Some of the topics are presented from an elementary viewpoint so as to help undergraduates new to the subject. The later parts are more advanced. Because the subject is so large and has seen many important recent advances, some topics have had to be treated briefly, but there is a full bibliography with about 600 references.

Download or read book Behavior of High-latitude Irregularities During Geomagnetic Disturbances written by Zwi Houminer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scintillation observations of VHF and UHF transmissions from geostationary satellites at Goose Bay have been used to study the average characteristics of the high latitude irregularity region. The paper describes the average time development and mean diurnal pattern of irregularities during 58 magnetic storms in 1971-1976. The diurnal variation at Goose Bay shows two peaks of scintillation activity. One peak occurs during the afternoon hours, while the second occurs during the night. The average diurnal pattern is independent of type of storm. diurnal and seasonal effects appear only in the first day of storm commencement and not in the following days which show a very similar diurnal picture.
