Book excerpt: For 150 years Northgate, the main road into the town of Darlington, in the north east of England, has been dominated by a large Victorian church with its 120 foot steeple & large, solid, blue entrance doors. This book opens those large blue doors & gives us a fascinating glimpse into 150 years of church life and the changes in society over that period. It takes us from the first Minister, Rev Johnman, who was attracted to Darlington because it offered 'plenty of hard work, ' through to the newest member's description of coming through the big blue doors for the first time. On the way it covers members' memories of the way in which the church shared in their life-changing events, such as the adoption of children, marriage, serious illness and death. They are all set against the backdrop of church activities and the ever-changing society. As well as appealing to anyone with a connection with the church, this book will also appeal to anyone who has an interest in the social history of Darlington.

Book Synopsis A Historical Theology of Worship by : Elaine Sarah Colechin
Download or read book A Historical Theology of Worship written by Elaine Sarah Colechin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the church worship as it does? Worship is central to the life and vocation of the church. Yet the church's understanding of worship is more often connected to practicalities and a congregation's likes or dislikes. This book seeks to take the reader beyond the practical; to explore where God is in worship and the impact worship should have on the life of the church. Through a historical narrative of the evolution of worship in a British Free Church (the United Reformed Church and its antecedents, the Congregational Church in England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church of England), freedom, order, and participation are identified as the key elements of worship. Investigation into their interrelationship develops a theology of worship that is applicable not only to churches of the Free Church tradition in Britain, but potentially to the universal church.
Book Synopsis Protestant Nonconformist Texts Volume 4 by : David M. Thompson
Download or read book Protestant Nonconformist Texts Volume 4 written by David M. Thompson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary texts are used in this volume to illustrate key themes in the history of Nonconformity in England and Wales. Although the twentieth century was in many ways a century of decline, this book shows that there was still much life in the Nonconformist tradition. It also looks at contemporary issues such as racism and the place of women. Through contemporary writings it provides an insight into the life and thought of the English Free Churches in a century in which they expected to come into their own, only to discover that they faced new challenges and the problems of decline.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church by : Andrew Louth
Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church written by Andrew Louth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 4474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,500 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, from theology; churches and denominations; patristic scholarship; and the bible; to the church calendar and its organization; popes; archbishops; other church leaders; saints; and mystics. In this new edition, great efforts have been made to increase and strengthen coverage of non-Anglican denominations (for example non-Western European Christianity), as well as broadening the focus on Christianity and the history of churches in areas beyond Western Europe. In particular, there have been extensive additions with regards to the Christian Church in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Australasia. Significant updates have also been included on topics such as liturgy, Canon Law, recent international developments, non-Anglican missionary activity, and the increasingly important area of moral and pastoral theology, among many others. Since its first appearance in 1957, the ODCC has established itself as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, and an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.

Download or read book Dictionary of Christianity written by J.C. Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1996. A comprehensive reference guide to saints, popes, martyrs, orders, heresies, schisms and religious movements and practices, the Dictionary of Christianity is an alphabetically-arranged volume of essential facts about Christianity and the Christian church. It includes: accounts of the lives of theologians, philosophers, and reformers whose works influenced the development of Christianity; biblical statistics and information about the chief editions of the Bible; the lives of saints, including their feast days; and details about offices and vestments, rituals and festivals. In recent years there has been an upsurge in ecumenical movements, and increased communication between Eastern and Western Catholics and Protestants. There has also been an increase in the membership of the Eastern Church in Western countries and, with the fall of Communism in Russia, a revival of the Russian Orthodox Church. In responseto this phenomena, the Dictionary of Christianity covers all the main branches of the Christian church. It will be an invaluable reference for all students of religion.
Book Synopsis The Theological Education of the Ministry by : Alan P.F. Sell
Download or read book The Theological Education of the Ministry written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwilling on conscientious grounds to submit to the religious tests imposed by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the English and Welsh Dissenters of the second half of the seventeenth century established academies in which their young men, many of them destined for the ministry, might receive a higher education. From the eighteenth century onwards, theological colleges devoted exclusively to ministerial education were founded, while in Scotland historically, and in England and Wales over the past 120 years, freestanding university faculties of divinity/theology have provided theological education to ordinands and others. These diverse educational contexts are all represented in this collection of papers, but the focus is upon those who taught in them: Caleb Ashworth (Daventry Academy); John Oman (Westminster [Presbyterian] College Cambridge); N. H. G. Robinson (University of St. Andrews); Geoffrey F. Nuttall (New [Congregational] College, London); T. W. Manson (University of Manchester); Owen Evans (University of Manchester and Hartley Victoria Methodist College)--the lone Methodist scholar discussed here; and W. Gordon Robinson and J. H. Eric Hull (University of Manchester and Lancashire Independent College). Between them these scholars covered the core disciplines of theological education: biblical studies, ecclesiastical history, philosophy, doctrine, and systematic theology.
Book Synopsis Nonconformist Theology in the Twentieth Century by : Alan P.F. Sell
Download or read book Nonconformist Theology in the Twentieth Century written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study of the systematic, doctrinal, and constructive theology produced within the major Nonconformist traditions during the twentieth century. By the end of the nineteenth century, modern biblical critical methods were fairly widely adopted, evolutionary thought was in the air, and doctrinal modifications, especially concerning the fatherhood of God, were underway. Sell charts the influence on Nonconformist thinking in the twentieth century of the New Theology associated with R. J. Campbell, the First World War, the reception of Karl Barth, the theological excitement of the 1960s, and growing religious pluralism. The second lecture concerns the major Christian doctrines of God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Trinity. Whereas in the early decades of the century there was considerable emphasis upon the atonement, during the concluding two decades the Trinity received more attention than had formerly been the case. In Lecture Three attention is directed to ecclesiological and ecumenical themes. The Nonconformists are presented as Protestant, and as displaying some zeal in propagating their particular understanding of the Church. The doctrinal aspects of their national and international moves toward inner-family unity and of their broader ecumenical relationships are considered. Eschatology is treated in the concluding lecture prior to Sell's assessment of the significance of twentieth-century Nonconformist theology, and his observations regarding its current state, its future content, and its practitioners.

This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the origins of Christianity lie in the Near East, Europe and Christianity have an exceptional relationship, since most Europeans perceive Christianity as a Western - more precisely, as a European - religion. The region has seen rapid social change in the 21st century, set off by factors including energy crisis and environmental awareness, poverty and exclusion, falling birthrates and increased migration, changing attitudes to sexuality, gender and family life, and challenges to Europe's idea of itself and place in the global order. Amidst all this flux, this volume focuses on one particular issue: the rapidly changing profile of the Christian faith that has shaped the life of the European continent for a millennium and more.At a time when patterns of Christian life and worship appear to be dying out, yet traces of new life are also appearing, this volume maps out the current reality of Christianity in Western and Northern Europe with all its questions and uncertainties.
