Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation in practice is to determine how the University of Louisville's College of Business can better support transfer students as they enter the college. Current practices do not best support this transition phase for students which can lead to academic struggles. Considering the Fall 2020 population consisted of 416 students who had transferred from another university, this is a significant population of students for the College of Business. Outside of where the students are coming from and the courses they will transfer, no data on the students' needs or expectations are collected upon entering the school. To implement better practices, College of Business transfer students were asked to participate in this research study. Additionally, the College of Business advising team, administration, and the orientation team were included to provide insight in current practices with transfer students and knowledge of the population. To gather information for this research and from participants, a mixed methods approach was taken. Quantitative data was collected using student records such as grade point averages and predicted levels of support needed, which indicates student success in a course. A survey using a Likert scale was also used as the first touch point with transfer student participants. This survey asked questions surrounding the student's previous college experiences, interactions with the advising team, experience with transfer student orientation, and how prepared they felt before and after their first semester. Qualitative data was collected by means of interviews with all participant groups with an additional focus group for the advising team. The participants were interviewed using Microsoft Teams with the virtual video chat feature. This method will also be used for the focus group. This research led to the suggestion of creating a transfer student specific orientation, the implementation of new advising practices for transfer students, and a welcome week of events specific to College of Business students.

The percentage is especially troubling when compared to students who chose to start their collegiate journeys at a four-year institution. This project begins by describing the transfer student population, highlighting students transitioning from a two-year institution to a four-year institution, and explaining why this expanding student population struggles to graduate within six years compared to the native student population. To understand this dilemma, this project addresses three key factors that negatively affect college transfer students and lengthen transfer students’ time to degree completion. First discussed is the favoritism of native students, particularly focusing on the student orientations offered. Next discussed are the difficult semesters following the transfer in those cases that are described as having an ?awkward fit.? The relationship and academic challenges often labeled ?transfer shock? constitute the final factor that negatively impacts college transfer students and their time to degree completion. To combat these challenges, transfer students need particular support and this project details how academic advisors, particularly those working at community colleges, can utilize social media as a tool to communicate and help prepare students to successfully integrate into a four-year institution; thus, hastening degree completion.

Book excerpt: The number of students transferring from state colleges to state universities in Florida is significant due to the articulation agreements that are supported by the Board of Governors. These agreements allow students who have completed an associate degree to transfer their credits toward a bachelor's degree at a state university. However, transfer students face numerous barriers including academic, financial, and personal that hinder their success as they transition and start their first year at the state university. A large metropolitan public university in Florida has implemented success coaching, a new model of holistic student support, and advising services to provide targeted guidance and advising for transfer students. Some of these services start while the students are at the state college to facilitate the transfer process and allow them to be successful at the state university. The purpose of this study is to explore the perspectives of transfer students to get an insight regarding the obstacles they battle and determine whether these services were effective in helping students overcome challenges. To this end, this study is embedded within Schlossberg's Transition Theory and utilizes a qualitative approach to allow important insights to emerge from the student perspective. The researcher conducted and video recorded in-depth interviews with 11 transfer students in their first year at the state university who have utilized the transfer and advising services provided by the university. The data was then transcribed, reviewed, and coded resulting in several themes relating to the first and second research question. The findings of this study are discussed within the context of the existing literature and the theoretical framework. Implications for higher education institutions as well as recommendations for future research are presented.

Book excerpt: The work in this dissertation aims to support a more equitable science education culture that better supports students who have historically and continue to be inequitably pushed out of science. Our equity-oriented and anti-deficit research agenda led us to study community college and transfer students as well as their self-efficacy and self-efficacy experiences. This dissertation opens by overviewing the state of STEM education and explaining how research approaches often frame students in deficit ways. Chapter 1 introduces the author's researcher positionality and relevant literature to her research approaches. The author's research agenda prioritizes supporting marginalized students in STEM through studying the construct of self-efficacy. After reviewing the research framing, Chapter 2 introduces relevant literature about self-efficacy and two-year college (TYC) transfer student experiences. Chapter 2 ends by addressing how the author's research positionality aligns with and impacts the ways she researches self-efficacy and TYC transfer students. Afterwards, each body chapter (Chapters 3, 4, and 5) opens with a transition situating it in the broader story of the dissertation. Chapter 3 opens by reminding readers of the reasons for our qualitative approach to studying self-efficacy. Then, it describes the development of a qualitative codebook for self-efficacy. Chapter 4 opens by explaining our shift to a narrative analysis case study of a single transfer student. This chapter ultimately diverged from self-efficacy, and Chapter 4 will discuss the reasons and the results of that narrative analysis, stating that supporting characters were instrumental in a transfer student's success story. The chapter ends with implications for universities to learn from TYCs. The dissertation transitions to Chapter 5 by broadening out from a single student's case study to a positively impactful course experience at a TYC for STEM students intending to transfer. This chapter describes design considerations learned from the course as well as opportunities the course provided for student self-efficacy experiences. Chapter 6 discusses the story across all three body chapters as situated in the research framing and concludes the dissertation.

Book excerpt: The transition experience for students who are transferring from community college to university can be an overwhelming experience for any typical student, but can be even greater for students with vulnerable backgrounds. This phenomenological action research study followed the five-month community college to the university transition experience of five students in a scholarship program. The students participated in a three-part intervention in support of their transition experience. Three theoretical perspectives framed the study: community cultural wealth, transition theory, and transfer student capital. This framework enabled me to first identify the strengths the students possessed, despite their vulnerable backgrounds, through participation in individual interviews. The students then participated in pre- and post-focus groups and completed pre- and post-questionnaires. Through these, they identified which transition coping skills were their strongest and which transfer capital they possessed from their community college experience. They also shared how they applied those prior learned skills and capital at the university. This study revealed how these students utilized their strengths at moments when they lacked certain coping skills and transfer capital during their transition experience. One particular strength was how the students accessed the resources of the scholarship program at the center of this study to help them with their sense of the ability to succeed at the university.

International transfer students face additional difficulties. The purpose of this action research (AR) study was to explore and deeply understand the difficulties and unique adjustments faced by transfer students, academically, socially, emotionally, and administratively/practically, as they transition to College T from their old institution and implement interventions to smooth this transition. In particular, the experiences of international transfer students, coming from institutions both within and from outside the United States, who speak English as a second language, were examined. This was done through the lenses of Bridges' (1980, 1991) and Schlossberg's (1981, 1984, 1989, 1995, 2011) theories of transition as well as Oberg's (1960) theory of culture shock. Data were gathered over two and a half years from ten international transfer students at three different times during their first year at College T. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with AR team members as well as staff and graduate/undergraduate students working with transfer students. In addition, survey data were gathered from three different groups of transfer students in spring 2016, fall 2016, and fall 2017. The AR team followed two cycles of AR, which involved assessing the situation, planning action, taking action, and evaluating action (Coghlan & Brannick, 2014). The findings from this study affirm much of the literature related to the challenges of transfer students - that they do experience academic, social, emotional and administrative/practical struggles. In addition, international transfer students have additional challenges stemming from language proficiency, cultural knowledge and culture shock. The major findings drawn from the study were: (1) issues related to language and culture make the transfer and integration experience of international transfer students uniquely challenging; (2) institutions need to be open to making necessary structural changes to provide ongoing, sustained support for transfer students, especially international transfer students, to help them become an integral part of the college community and successful students and Alumni. Implications for future research and practice are offered.

Book excerpt: With over 60% of college graduates attending multiple institutions (United States Department of Education, 2006), many starting at community colleges, the importance of understanding community college transfer students' stories is critical to retention and graduation agendas at colleges and universities nationwide. Schlossberg's Transition Theory has recently been introduced into higher education literature as a conceptual framework for working with various student populations such as student veterans (Wheeler, 2012; Rumann, 2010); student athletes (Henderson, 2013); and students on academic probation (Tovar & Simon, 2006) among others. Minimal work has incorporated Schlossberg's Transition Theory into studies of community college transfer students; thus this study was developed to help fill that gap of understanding their transition through that lens. The central question to the study was "how do community college transfer students perceive their transition into a large research, land-grant institution." This phenomenological qualitative study incorporated journaling and interviews with 12 full-time community college transfer students (21-41 years old) at three points during their first semester (fall 2014) at a large Midwestern research institution. Using open, axial, and selective coding, the following five themes emerged: funding the college experience; transition takes time; support is critical; maturity; and personal responsibility. These participants transition experience, as indicated by the emergent themes, fit well within the context of Schlossberg's Transition Theory. Overall, these participants' transition meant an opportunity to move forward, start a new chapter, and expand one's opportunities. Consistent with other studies that have used Schlossberg's Transition Theory, there is value in considering this theoretical framework when working with community college transfer students. When universities create policies and procedures that are geared toward increasing student's assets in Schlossberg's 4-S coping resources and are mindful of the full transition (moving in, moving through, and moving out), administrators, staff, and policy makers can assist in the transition for community college transfer students and provide support to a growing portion of the student population in higher education.
