Book excerpt: Molière combined all the traditional elements of comedy - wit, slapstick, spectacle and satire - to create richly sophisticated and enduringly popular dramas. The Miser is the story of Harpagon, a mean-spirited old man who becomes obsessed with making money out of the marriage of his children, while The Hypochondriac, another study in obsession, is a brilliant satire on the medical profession. The School for Wives, in which an ageing domestic tyrant is foiled in his plans to marry his young ward, provoked such an outcry that Molière followed it with The School for Wives Criticized - a witty retort to those who disapproved of the play's supposed immorality. And while Don Juan is the darkest and most tragic of all the plays in this collection, it still mocks the soullessness of the skinflint with scathing irony.

Book excerpt: This play was acted for the first time on September 9, 1668. In it, Molière has borrowed from Plautus, and has imitated several other authors, but he far surpasses them in the treatment of his subject. The picture of the miser, in whom love of money takes the place of all natural affections, who not only withdraws from family intercourse, but considers his children as natural enemies, is finely drawn, and renders Molière's Miser altogether more dramatic and moral than those of his predecessors. Molière acted the part of Harpagon.

Book excerpt: Through the inner springs of Harpagon —a paragon of the miser and the avaricious money lender— Moliere delves into the psychology of this repulsive literary prototype. Balzac continued the study of such characters; especially in his novel Gobseck. Yet, this characters seems to appear in all societies: Shakespeare's Shylock, and Dickens' Scrooge in England, and Perez Galdos's Torquemada in Spain. When Valere pronounces a maxim —found in Cicero's treatise on rhetoric, Ad Herennium— “frugality should reign in the meals which one offers; and that according to the saying of an ancient, we must eat to live, and not live to eat,” Harpagon is all ears and rejoices in its repetition, and wishes to commit it to memory.Harpagon, despite all his avaricious sins, never loses his passion for money, finding redemption in the peculiar love he shows for his family. So, in Moliere's play he isn't the heartless and cruel creature, but a character that finds his own humanity in the love of his daughter.

Book excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Molière, a French playwright and actor is considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature."The Miser" was first produced when Molière's company was under the protection of Louis XIV himself. It was loosely based on the Latin comedy Aulularia by Plautus, from which many incidents and scraps of dialogue are borrowed, as well as from contemporary Italian farces. The miser of the title is called Harpagon, a name adapted from the Latin harpago, meaning a hook or grappling iron. He is obsessed with the wealth he has amassed and always ready to save expenses. Now a widower, he has a son, Cléante, and a daughter, Élise. Although he is over seventy, he is attempting to arrange a marriage between himself and an attractive young woman, Mariane. She and Cléante are already devoted to each other, however, and the son attempts to procure a loan to help her and her sick mother, who are impoverished. Élise, Harpagon's daughter, is the beloved of Valère, but her father hopes to marry her to a wealthy man of his choosing, Seigneur Anselme. Meanwhile Valère has taken a job as steward in Harpagon's household so as to be close to Élise. The complications are only resolved at the end by the rather conventional discovery that some of the principal characters are long lost relatives.Satire and farce blend in the fast-moving plot, as when the miser's hoard is stolen. Asked by the police magistrate whom he suspects, Harpagon replies, "Everybody! I wish you to take into custody the whole town and suburbs" and indicates the theatre audience while doing so. The play also makes fun of certain theatrical conventions, such as the spoken aside addressed to the audience, hitherto ignored by the characters onstage. The characters of "The Miser", however, generally demand to know who exactly is being spoken to.

Book excerpt: This edition of comedies by Moliere includes: "The School for Wives," a comedy of infidelity and his first great success, "The Critique of the School for Wives," "Don Juan," "The Miser," and "The Imaginary Invalid," the play that Moliere appeared in only hours before his death. Renowned for his comedic genius and ability to portray a true sense of humanity in his characters, Moliere has been delighting and intriguing audiences since the seventeenth century, at which time they pleased King Louis XIV and changed the face of French comic drama. "The Miser," a representative product of Moliere's many-sided genius, is a comedy of manners loosely based on "The Pot of Gold," by the Roman playwright Plautus. In each of these plays, Moliere weaves a dark thread of tragedy into his comic visions of love, society, and the comfortable bourgeois home.
