Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous Barsoom series. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. He wrote it between July and September 28, 1911, going through four working titles; initially, he was going to call it My First Adventure on Mars, then The Green Martians, Dejah Thoris, Martian Princess, and finally Under the Moons of Mars. The finished story was first published under the last of these titles in All-Story as a six-part serial in the issues for February-July 1912. For the serial publication, the author's name was given as "Norman Bean"; Burroughs had chosen the pseudonym of "Normal Bean" as a type of pun stressing that he was in his right mind, being concerned he might suffer ridicule for writing such a fantastic story. The effect was spoiled when a typesetter changed "Normal" to "Norman" on the assumption that the former was a typographical error. The story was later published as a complete novel under the present title by A. C. McClurg in October 1917.Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction.

Book excerpt: Best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure, A Princess of Mars is the first adventure of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who unexpectedly find himself transplanted to the planet Mars. Yet this red planet is far more than a dusty, barren place; it's a fantasy world populated with giant green barbarians, beautiful maidens in distress, and weird flora and monstrous fauna the likes of which could only exist in the author's boundless imagination. Sheer escapism of the tallest order, the Martian novels are perfect entertainment for those who enjoy classic "space opera."

It's the beginning of an incredible odyssey in which John Carter, a gentleman from Virginia and a Civil War veteran, unexpectedly finds himself on to the red planet, scene of continuing combat among rival tribes. Captured by a band of six-limbed, green-skinned savage giants called Tharks, Carter soon is accorded all the honor of a chieftain after it's discovered that his muscles, accustomed to Earth's greater gravity, now give him a decided advantage in strength. And when his captors take as prisoner Dejah Thoris, the lovely human-looking princess of the city of Helium, Carter must call upon every ounce of strength, courage, and ingenuity to rescue her-before Dejah becomes the slave of the depraved Thark leader, Tal Hajus!

Book excerpt: Her oval face was beautiful in the extreme, her every feature finely chisled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Similar in face and figure to women of Earth, she was nevertheless a true Martian--and prisoner of the fierce green giants who held me captive, as well! First book in Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars series.

Book excerpt: Rediscover the adventure-pulp classic that gave the world its first great interplanetary romance—now featuring an introduction by Junot Díaz In the spring of 1866, John Carter, a former Confederate captain prospecting for gold in the Arizona hills, slips into a cave and is overcome by mysterious vapors. He awakes to find himself naked, alone, and forty-eight million miles from Earth—a castaway on the dying planet Mars. Taken prisoner by the Tharks, a fierce nomadic tribe of six-limbed, olive-green giants, he wins respect as a cunning and able warrior, who by grace of Mars’s weak gravity possesses the agility of a superman. He also wins the heart of fellow-prisoner Dejah Thoris, the alluring, red-skinned Princess of Helium, whose people he swears to defend against their grasping and ancient enemy, the city-state of Zodanga. John Carter first appeared in 1912 in the pages of The All-Story magazine and immediately entered the dream-life of American readers young and old. He was Edgar Rice Burroughs’s favorite among his many creations and remains a favorite of lovers of science fiction and fantasy everywhere.

Book excerpt: John Carter, a Civil War veteran on the run from the Apache Indians, finds himself supernaturally transported to Mars -- not the Mars we observe from here on Earth, but a magical Mars -- a Mars that calls itself Barsoom, is populated by all sorts of weird creatures, human, alien -- animal and vegetable. It is a Mars made of magic and stranger things. Enslaved by giant, green barbarians who also respect him for his vast strength (remember, folks who grow up in Mars's weak gravity are, well, weaker than you and me), Carter manages to survive despite overwhelming odds and win the hand of a beautiful princess. A PRINCESS OF MARS was Edgar Rice Burroughs's first novel -- it marks the beginning of one of the most successful, prolific, and, in a strange way, literary, careers ever.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This book contains a historical context, where past events or the study and narration of these events are examined. The historical context refers to the circumstances and incidents surrounding an event. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its time. Therefore, when analyzing events that took place tens, hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is essential to know the historical context to understand them. Otherwise, we would be analyzing and judging what happened in a totally different era with a current perspective.Edgar Rice Burroughs (Chicago; September 1, 1875-Encino, California; March 19, 1950) was an American fantasy genre writer, noted for his series of Barluom stories (set on Mars) by Pellucidar (taking place in the center of the Earth), the Venus cycle with Carson Napier as the main protagonist and, especially, for the creation of the world famous Tarzan. Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago, Illinois (for many years he lived in the Oak Park suburb),
