Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congenital Heart Disease and Neurodevelopment: Understanding and Improving Outcomes brings together the work of leading researchers from the U.K., Europe, and the U.S. to provide a comprehensive examination of the causes, risks, and neurodevelopmental and psychological outcomes in children with congenital heart disease. The book includes longitudinal studies which have tracked outcomes from birth through late childhood and explores the emergent phenotype and etiologies, risk, and protective factors that strengthen proposed models. Medical and surgical advances have meant that greater numbers of children with even the most severe congenital heart disease (CHD) now survive well into adulthood. Studies over the past 20 years have suggested certain neurodevelopmental and psychological features are common, with clinical interventions being internationally articulated. The U.K. Belfast Center has developed and evaluated unique early intervention programs to circumvent the common problems discerned and promote optimal adjustment and outcomes. The first edition of Congenital Heart Disease and Neurodevelopment: Understanding and Improving Outcomes describes these programs in detail and outlines promising results obtained by researchers worldwide. Such interventions, together with the U.S. consensus statement (Circulation, 2012) on neurodevelopmental screening, hold great promise for clinical interventions. Features input from leading research experts in the field Describes cutting-edge research on longitudinal studies that link neurodevelopmental phenotypes with cutting-edge neuroimaging studies Discusses the first series of early intervention studies developed in Belfast targeted at key developmental transitions—birth and diagnosis, early childhood, and adolescence Includes clinical implications and action points in each section Features generalizable potential of interventions across other pediatric populations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full of evidence-based, easy to understand information about CHD, Healing Hearts and Minds offers strategies for learning to thrive despite living with this condition, but most importantly it will offer hope and connection. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most commonly diagnosed birth abnormality in the US. With great advances in surgery and medicine, however, survival rates have improved by 75% since the 1940s. Welcome news, of course, as only a few decades ago these birth defects were considered a death sentence, but as with any chronic condition, survival does not mean the issue is cured. With better medical care, babies born today with CHD have a good chance of surviving, but throughout their entire lives they can face surgeries, invasive treatments, lifelong monitoring, frequent medical check-ups, and significant limitations on physical activity, in addition to poor public awareness which can have an impact on social inclusion and understanding. Much attention has rightly been focused on the medical needs of these children and on providing their parents and caretakers with resources and information to navigate the complexities of this chronic condition. Little attention, however, has been paid to the psychosocial impacts on these individuals, especially as they grow, mature, and become adults living with a serious, chronic medical condition. Prevalence rates for anxiety, depression, and PTSD are significantly higher (2-3x in some cases) for people living with CHD than the general adult population. From feeling self-conscious about scars and limitations on physical activity and sense of loss around so many of life's little normalcies, to frequent hospital visits and living in constant fear of an emergency, this condition is ever-present. Liza Morton and Tracy Livecchi are both mental health professionals who have developed a specialty in working with clients who have chronic medical conditions, and they are both themselves living with CHD. In this book they set out to provide the resources and support they have been looking for their entire adult lives. While their powerful personal stories are woven into the narrative, the book is focused on providing evidence-based coping and self-care skills for adults living with CHD.

Book excerpt: From birth to adolescence, from doctor's office to playground. Written for parents whose child has a heart disorder, this book provides up-to-date and reliable information from medical experts on children's heart problems. The first edition of The Heart of a Child was widely praised for helping families understand and cope with heart disorders, and many support organizations and websites now recommend this book as "must have" for families. Reflecting changes in treatment and new knowledge about genetics, as well as changes in the system for health care delivery, the text and illustrations have been thoroughly updated with the latest developments in understanding and treating heart problems in children. The second edition includes: • New and updated information on the genetics of heart defects, including syndromes associated with heart defects • Descriptions of new approaches to treatment, including surgery and medication • Advice on how to deal with managed care • Information about advances in prenatal care • Updated list of websites, references, and resources for families • A note to grandparents Written by experts in pediatric cardiology from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the University of Utah Medical Center, this new edition of The Heart of a Child uses case examples, questions-and-answers, detailed drawings, and careful descriptions to explain the causes of heart disorders, how they are discovered and diagnosed, how they affect children, and how they are treated. The overriding principle of modern treatment is to restore the child who has a heart problem to the best possible health with the minimum of tests and procedures. The Heart of a Child helps parents understand the challenges, the options, the decisions—and the many reasons for hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devastating words Congenital Heart Defect thrust parents of more than 36,000 children annually into a frightening, dark tunnel—dramatically changing the dynamics of each family. Because CHD, attacks unexpectedly, parents reel, bombarded with information regarding treatments, tests, and decisions—as parents echo, "I’ve never felt so alone. I can’t believe this is happening to us." From the initial diagnosis and throughout the daunting journey, the twelve chapters and resources in this guide weave advice, support, and hope from fellow travelers and medical professionals who come alongside through encouraging short stories, refreshing helpful hints, and inspiring scriptures and prayers. Many weary parents pull apart as communication breaks down during these devastating times—sometimes far apart. You-niquely Made is a section that helps family members appreciate different personalities and methods of coping. Overwhelmed families find comfort and courage as they read about the struggles parents face, balancing needs of their child and family (the set-aside spouses and the invisible ones—siblings) and self—the caregiver. Readers come to understand—the new normal of congenital heart disease. Heartfelt stories also include becoming your child’s advocate, reactions to stages of grief including unexpected waves and survivor’s guilt. This second book in the "You Are Not Alone" book series joins national award winning, Hope for Families of Children with Cancer, shining rays of light in the darkness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides medical care givers with detailed information on those aspects of adolescence that are of significance in the setting of congenital heart disease (CHD), from anatomic and physiologic changes to behavioral issues. In addition, it explains how care should be organized in order to ensure that the needs of adolescents with CHD are fully met. Both theoretical and practical aspects of the switch from a pediatric to an adult health perspective in CHD patients are outlined in detail, drawing attention to the importance of a structured transition plan and other best practices. As the survival of children with complex CHD improves further, the number of adolescents with CHD will continue to grow. Awareness of the challenges that these patients face is essential if they are to be appropriately prepared to assume adult roles and functioning. Readers will find Congenital Heart Disease and Adolescence to be an excellent source of relevant knowledge and guidance. It has been written for a broad audience, bearing in mind that care in adolescents is an interdisciplinary task involving close collaboration among physicians, specialists, nurses, patients, and relatives.
