Book excerpt: The combustion of a single hydrogen jet, normally injected into a radio frequency (RF) heated, oxidant-containing, supersonic flow, has been established to characterize the chemical and fluid dynamic phenomena associated with the reaction process and ultimately validate the predictive capability of computational computer dynamic (CFD) codes. The experimental system employed for this study is unique in that it uses an electrodeless, inductively coupled plasma tube to generate the high temperature oxidant-containing gas for subsequent nozzle expansion. Advantages of an RF heated flow system include reduced free-stream chemical contamination, continuous operation, and relative ease of integration into a typical flow laboratory environment. A description of the system utilized for this study is presented including preliminary results of the reactive flow characterization. In addition, the use of the laser-based diagnostic techniques, such as planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), for measuring flow properties is also discussed. 8 refs., 7 figs.

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted utilizing an arc heater as a high enthalpy air source to determine the effects of water vapor contamination on a hydrogen-air supersonic combustion process. A flow apparatus was constructed to permit vitiated, arc-heated airflow to mix coaxially with hydrogen in a constant area duct. The hydrogen was injected at the exit of the vitiated air nozzle which was designed for M = 2.8. Data were obtained in the form of wall pressure distributions and impact pressures and gas samples obtained from nonquenching pitot probes. The enthalpy of the mixture was varied from 1360 to 1860 Btu/1bm and the water vapor mass percent in the vitiated air was varied from 0 to 23. (Author).
