Book excerpt: We have measured the spin structure functions g2{sup p} and g2{sup d} and the virtual photon asymmetries A2{sup p} and A2{sup d} over the kinematic range 0.02 (less-than or equal to) x (less-than or equal to) 0.8 and 0.7 (less-than or equal to) Q2 (less-than or equal to) 20 GeV2 by scattering 29.1 and 32.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and 6LiD targets. Our measured g2 approximately follows the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. The twist-3 reduced matrix elements d2{sup p} and d2(superscript n) are less than two standard deviations from zero. The data are inconsistent with the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule if there is no pathological behavior as x --> 0. The Efremov-Leader-Teryaev integral is consistent with zero within our measured kinematic range. The absolute value of A2 is significantly smaller than the A2

We extracted the polarized structure functions g1 and g2 of the proton and deuteron. Both experiments made precision measurements through a wide range in x and Q2. These data fall into the kinematic range between existing world data and have good consistency with them. In combination with the other world data, the results for g1 allow increased constraint on NLO QCD fits to the polarized structure functions. For g2 no significant world data existed before E155X. The E155X measurement provides information about the higher twist effects in the nucleon.

Book excerpt: E143 was a high precision measurement of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g1 and g2 in SLAC's End Station A facility, with longitudinally and transversely polarized NH3 and ND3 targets, and a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The experiment was done, at beam energies of 29, 16 and 9.7 Gev. The deeply inelastic scattered electrons were detected by two independent spectrometers at 4.5{sup o} and 7{sup o} relative to the incident electron beam. At a beam energy of 29 Gev, the measurements covered the Bjorken x range from 0.03 to 0.8, and the Q2 range from 1.2 (GeV/c)2 to 9.8 (GeV/c)2 . It was found that the +"1 g1{sup p}(x, Q2)dx is more than two standard deviations away from the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule, and the corresponding deuteron integral is more than three standard deviations away from the Ellis-Jaffe's rule, but the Bjorken sum rule is consistent with the experimental data. Tests of the sum rules at different values of Q2, and the implications of these results for the quark-parton model have also been done.

Book excerpt: Measurements were made of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g1{sup p} and g1{sup d} at beam energies of 29.1, 16.2, and 9.7 GeV, and g2{sup p} and g2{sup d} at a beam energy of 29.1 GeV. The integrals [Lambda]{sub p} = ∫01 g1{sup p} (x, Q2)dx and [Lambda]{sub d} = ∫01 g1{sup d}(x, Q2)dx were evaluated at fixed Q2 = 3 (GeV/c)2 using the 29.1 GeV data to yield [Lambda]{sub p} = 0.127 ± 0.004(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.) and [Lambda]{sub d} = 0.041 ± 0.003 ± 0.004. The Q2 dependence of the ratio g1/F1 was studied and found to be small for Q2 > 1 (GeV/c)2. Within experimental precision the g2 data are well-described by the twist-2 contribution, g2{sup WW}. Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry A2 was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit √R for both proton and deuteron targets. A2{sup p} is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero.
