Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practice-Book in English Composition Present day conditions seem to call for a very plain, practical text-book, brief, yet sufficiently varied in contents to provide both oral work and written work, home tasks and unprepared class room drill; a course so contrived that definite, de sirable results may be obtained without over burdening the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enlarged Practice-Book in English Composition The reception given the earlier editions seems fully to justify the unusual emphasis placed upon drill in the correct use of words and the framing of sentences. These are days of care less, lawless speech; we must return to dictionary and grammar. Only through persistent drill in spelling, punctuation, and the building of sentences that are grammatically and rhetorically good can we hope to train our young people to speak and write with correctness and skill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Exercises in English Composition: Or the Young Composer's Guide Of the numerous works on education that have been issued from the press, none that has appeared on the subject of English Composition seems to afford the young composer the necessary assistance to the successful pursuit of this study. Without entering into a detail of the defects of the systems before the public, it is sufficient to remark that they presuppose more mature thought, and a closer acquaintance with language than the pupil has acquired at the proper time to commence the study of this art. The work here presented is designed as a sequel to the author's New System of English Grammar, which forms a gradual introduction to the first principles of composition. The plan pursued in the following exercises, as in the work mentioned, is founded on the application of the principle of imitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition: A Manual of Theory and Practice IT is not too much to say that, for a very long time, the soundness of the theory which assumes that the long and laborious study of the dead languages of Greece and old Rome, must needs result in a know ledge of the living tongue of England, has been taken for granted. But, surely, actual experience has taught us, on the contrary, that, to acquire a work ing knowledge of a language by any method, other than the simple plan of studying the language itself, is (in fact) a thing impossible. The educational authorities of France and Germany have already arrived at this conclusion; and their school curriculum provides carefully graduated methods of instruction, ranging from the elements of the national tongue, to a complete system of the theory and practice of composition therein; methods which (as every teacher knows) do indisputably achieve their end: that of enabling the pupil to speak and to write his own language with facility, correctness, even with elegance. And, in so far as I have been able to adapt certain points in these methods to a different genius and tradition, I have been glad to borrow them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition The present text-book is intended as a guide to pupils in the first two years' work in English in the high school. The creed of its authors may be summed up in a few words: (1) A text-book in com position should be short, simple, clear; (2) it should set forth the principles of writing mainly in non technical language, i. E., in such language as the pupils Will recognize as being in their own sphere of interests and ideas; (3) it should lay stress upon the matter to be dealt With before the form, and upon the results to be obtained rather than the method; (4) it should give abundant suggestions as to material suitable for treatment by the pupils. In the view of the authors, the book contains material enough for the instruction in composition over a period of two years, Where such instruction is given once or twice a week. For no exercise in writ ing, of any type, is likely to attain its end if given but once. The pupil needs to try the work, to have his efforts judged by the teacher, and then to try again With the help derived from the teacher's criticisms. Even if his first attempt should be fairly successful, he should do more work of the same kind. For writ ing is an art, and, like all arts, requires frequent and thoughtful practice. With this procedure in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Course in English Composition Reading up beforehand is by no means advised in every case. And yet there seems to be little warrant for the objections to this practice sometimes advanced of late. The early work of nearly every great writer shows clearly that he began by' conscious, if not deliber ate, imitation. Still, it will be apparent from even a hasty glance into this book that style is not considered the all-important thing it is the subject-matter of models and references that has in most cases led to their selection, even translations being admitted. After all else is done, one thing remains for the teacher the criticism of the pupil's work.' There fore, mechanical faults and minor individual vices of style are not discussed herein. They are as numerous and as diverse as are the individual writers. Often, too, they are not matters of absolute right or wrong. Many adventitious considerations, which cannot be foreseen here, must go to settle the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter, Form and Style: A Manual of Practice in the Writing of English Composition But I may be allowed to emphasize here the principle which has guided me - namely, that in all forms of composition it is with the mass that one should begin at first, gradually paying more attention to the details of form and style. I have felt that many methods of teaching were doomed to failure because they took the component parts of a subject first, each part separately, so that the pupil could not see the wood for the trees. Whereas it would appear more human and humane to get first the creative act, and then shape the thing created. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written English: A Guide to the Rules of Composition This little book pretends to be in no sense a text book of grammar or rhetoric. It tries to give as briefly as possible such hints and reminders as all but the most experienced writers are sometimes glad to have. We have sought, not to treat the subject exhaustively, but on the contrary to omit all but the matters that in practice prove trouble some. A certain mass of errors, due to carelessness as much as anything else, appear in the writing of every Freshman class; and we have assumed that those same errors probably trouble the aver age graduate of the High Schools, whether he is a college student or not. We hope to give here the rules that cover these errors, and Such other hints as may smooth the path of the average writer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Composition and Rhetoric What should be most emphasized in a text-book on English composition is a question of much difficulty. My chief concern has been to discover what could be omitted rather than what could be included. The aim of the teacher of composition should be to bring his students into such an attitude of mind that a subject may be to them a genuine question to be answered, and not a mere occasion for combining words into sentences without regard to the thought. I have, therefore, laid especial emphasis on the choice and treatment of themes. If a writer can form the habit of choosing one sharply defined topic and of telling exactly what he thinks, the imperfect details of his composition can be corrected by reading and practice. I need scarcely remark that no book of instructions will make a finished writer. Only constant practice and merciless criticism by the writer himself can yield the desired result. My purpose is, therefore, rather to develop a few general principles than to prescribe definite rules. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practice-Book in English Composition No small part of the book is made up of exercises in spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Drill of this kind is not popular, but practiced teachers realize that, to-day as never before, it is necessary. Nor do such teachers fear in the least that drill in mechanical accuracy will check spontaneity. Spontaneity that sprawls, and tangles, and disregards grammar and dictionary had better be checked. Genius sometimes rebels, but it cannot be killed; it is the last thing a teacher need worry about. Nor is it any longer considered a pedagogic crime to place before the eyes of the impressionable young a faulty sentence and say This is wrong. Why is it wrong? How can it he made right? Some errors, to be sure, disappear of their own accord; but others remain and torment till they are rooted out. In arrangement the Practice-book differs from the ordinary. It is divided into two sections. Part I calls for short compositions, oral and written; Part II takes up an entirely different kind of work, training in mechanical accuracy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Exercises in English Composition: For Public and Private Schools and the Junior Classes in High Schools This little book had its origin in the Exercises in English which I have been contributing more or less regularly for some years to the School Work department of the Educational Monthly. Having been repeatedly assured by teachers that they had found these exercises of great service, and having been urged to collect and issue them in book form, I undertook a few months ago to comply with the request. In doing so, however, I decided to omit those of a purely grammatical character, both because teachers have less trouble in providing these for themselves, and because the new Public School Grammar contains a large number of such exercises. Having revised and arranged the rest, I added to them a considerable amount of new matter, including some exercises of a character different from any that appeared in the Monthly. My object throughout has been to make the exercises of practical value, and suitable for school work; and while the book does not pretend to contain a complete collection, it will be found to include, with two or three exceptions, exercises of every kind mentioned in the course in Composition prescribed for admission to High Schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition From English Models, Vol. 2 This book and its companion volume are the outcome of wide experience in the class-room. The method of teaching composition by means of the study and imitation of masterly passages of English prose is one that has been recommended by several great writers. Among them was R. L. Stevenson, who gained in this way his own fluent and individual style. In Composition from English Models an attempt has been made to systematize the practice, and the exercises are carefully planned so that the pupil may use each passage as an actual model.
