Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Simplification of the Method of Least Squares: A Lecture Given at the Galois Institute of Mathematics at Long Island University The given experimental results are plotted on accurately ruled millimeter paper, the scale large enough to show the likely errors of observation or experiment. 4 smooth curve is drawn free - hand to represent the trend of the points as closely as the eye will allow; or else a neat wavy curve is drawn through the points themselves. In some cases, if the points are more or less evenly thrown by the errors to the one and the other side of any curve on which they might belong, neighboring points may, for the purpose of interpolation, be con nected by straight lines. From the curve, or from the broken line, we read the ordinates corresponding to a set of uniformly increasing abscissas to which are assigned the values x 8 0, l, 2, 5, 4, 10; or some similar set. Still further simplification comes of assigning to the abiscissas the values (3-5) 2 -5, 4, 5, 2, l, O, l, 2, 5, 4, 5. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Method of Least Squares In writing the following pages I have had two objects in view: first, to present the fundamental principles and processes of the Method of Least Squares in so plain a manner, and to illustrate their application by such simple and practical examples, as to render it accessible to Civil Engineers who have not had the benefit of extended mathematical training; and secondly, to give an elementary exposition of the theory which would be adapted to the needs of a large and constantly increasing class of students. Hence the work falls into two parts, the first practical and the second theoretical, but each illustrating and supplementing the other. The numbering of the articles renders reference from one to the other easy; and the more thorough acquaintance the engineer makes with the second part the better will he adjust his observations, while it is only after much exercise with practical problems that the student can become thoroughly grounded in the theory. Should the book, then, be taken up by students unfamiliar with the subject, let me suggest to them, that even if their aim be only to acquire a knowledge of its theory, the shortest and best way to do it is to become first familiar with the practical applications of Fart I.; this attained, the rest follows naturally and easily. Book excerpt: This book continues where DOE Simplified leaves off in Chapter 8 with an introduction to "Response Surface Methods [RSM] for Optimization." It presents this advanced tool for design of experiments (DOE) in a way that anyone with a minimum of technical training can understand and appreciate. Unlike any other book of its kind, RSM Simplified keeps formulas to a minimum—making liberal use of figures, charts, graphs and checklists. It also offers many relevant examples, amusing and fun do-it-yourself exercises.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on the Method of Least Squares The "Elements of the Method of Least Squares," published in 1877, was written with two objects in view: first, to present the fundamental principles and processes of the subject in so plain a manner, and to illustrate their application by such simple and practical examples, as to render it accessible to civil engineers who have not had the benefit of extended mathematical training; and, secondly, to give an elementary exposition of the theory which would be adapted to the needs of a large and constantly increasing class of students. In preparing the following pages the author has likewise kept these two objects continually in mind. While the former work has been used as a basis, the alterations and additions have been so numerous and radical as to render this a new and distinct book rather than a second edition. The arrangement of the theoretical and practical parts is entirely different. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ...and that they be independent of one another, so that no one of them could be obtained by combining any of the others. If a dependent condition were included, by mistake, it would be indicated during the solution of the normal equations by a derived equation having all of its coefficients zero, or nearly so, so that the corresponding correlate would be indeterminate. The necessary number of independent angle and side equations will be given by formulas (107) and (124), namely, Number of Angle Equations = L'--S' + 1 (107) Number of Side Equations =L-2S +3 (124) in which L and S are the total numbers of lines and stations, and L' is the number of full lines and S' is the number of occupied stations. (For a station to be considered as occupied, at least two lines must be unbroken at that station.) The best method of writing the angle and side equations so as to be certain of their independence as well as their number, is to draw a sketch of the system or figure to be adjusted, adding one station at a time, with its lines to the previous stations, and writing the equations introduced by that station and those lines. For each station so added, there will be as many angle equations as new full lines, less one, and as many side equations as new lines, less two. As has been stated, small angles should be used in the side equations where practicable, although it is best to use each but once. In angle equations, on the contrary, they should be avoided. 1 These local conditions are avoided in the figure adjustment by using directions instead of angles, as will be shown later on. For example, the equations for Fig. 22, page 96, will be written. In this case, L = 13, L' =12, S = S' = 7, and there are six angle and two side equations. The complete...
