How far the Author may be likely to succeed in accomplishing these important objects, will be seen in the perusal of the following pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Bandaging The present volume is based on a previous one by the same author, issued in 1891. The illustrations, however, have all been redrawn and the manuscript rewritten, so that it is practically a new book. In describing the roller bandages an endeavor has been made to give their simplest and best mechanical construction. As a rule only the essential turns have been described and illustrated; to have done more would be simply to confuse the learner. Of recent years the prevalence of gauze bandages and their substitution for those of muslin have caused a great deterioration in their application. Many surgeons seem to wind them aimlessly around a part without the faintest idea of order or sequence. It is hardly necessary to say that there is a right way and a wrong way to apply even a gauze bandage, and the right way is the best way. No attempt has been made to describe all peculiar bandages or turns. Every surgeon will modify the bandage according to the emergencies of the case, but the bandages and turns embodying principles have been both described and illustrated in detail. Simplicity is the main characteristic of the modern bandage. The old writers, particularly Galen, describe most intricate bandages winding in many unusual directions. Almost every newly invented turn can be found in the bandages of the ancients. Their bandages were too complex, while we on the other hand are apt to be ignorant of their proper construction and careless in their application. Inasmuch as the book is intended for beginners and others not informed in medicine, the language used has been as simple and direct as possible, technical terms and expressions being avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Minor Surgery and Bandaging The Office of house-surgeon to a public hospital is one of the most responsible posts a young surgeon can occupy, and, at the same time, its value in giving him both experience and confidence can be scarcely too highly estimated. Before, however, entering upon the more purely surgical duties of the house-surgeon, it may be well to say a few words on his relation to the other Officials of the establishment, to the patients, and to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Minor Surgery, Including Bandaging The author has paid special attention to the aseptic and anti septic methods of treating wounds, methods which originated within the past few years and have brought indescribable benefit to humanity. The details of this important subject are given and in every way possible the reader is urged to follow certain rules in a way that we hope will be considered as characterized by clearness and simplicity. No bibliography has been given and literary references have been largely omitted. This has been done purely for the sake of simplicity and because the book represents the result of sev eral years of considerable experience in dispensaries, hospital practice and in college work. My grateful acknowledgments are due to Dr. W. E. Trego, Professor of Operative Surgery in the Cleveland Homoeopathic Medical College, for writing the chapter on Bandaging. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Minor Surgery and Bandaging for the Use of House-Surgeons, Dressers, and Junior Practitioners The relation of the house-surgeon to the visiting surgeon varies also in different institutions, and with different individuals. Some visiting-surgeons wish to do everything themselves, and are very wroth if a house surgeon has opened an abscess or tightened a bandage; while others allow their subordinates considerable liberty, provided the patients suffer no harm. Here, again, tradi tion and observation during student-life will enable the house-surgeon to keep clear of all collision with his superior officers and he is certainly bound to respect the reasonable prejudices of each surgeon with regard to the details of his practice, and not to attempt to bring the practices of two or three individual surgeons to one uniform level, by which all possibility of comparison would be lost. It is bandages and bandaging treated upon from the standpoint of a nurse, and the book is, as the title implies, a book especially for nurses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roller Bandage: With a Chapter on Surgical Dressing The plan which has been adopted in this book, as will be seen at a glance, is to teach by nu mercus illustrations rather than by elaborate description the method of applying the roller bandage. In order that the student may most readily familiarize himself with this very im portant subject, a series of illustrations is presented which were made in the following manner: Each bandage was applied to a living model, and whenever the. Roller pursued a course which the author has found in his association with students was the cause of any uncertainty, it was at once photographed. From these pho tographs accurate drawings were made. In this way it is hoped that the intricate course trav ersed by the roller in the most complex dressing has been made sufficiently plain to enable the student to apply it for himself almost unaided by the text. The latter will be found very brief and devoid of everything but the rule for application and the use to which the dressmg is commonly put. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Bandaging and Surgical Dressing: With Directions Concerning the Immediate Treatment of Cases of Emergency; For the Use of Dressers and Nurses This little book is chiefly a re-issue of those portions of Surgical Handicraft which deal with bandaging, Splinting. Etc. And of those which treat of the manage ment in the first instance of cases of emergency, only such new matter being added as is required to give some sort of continuity to the extracts. While I am anxious that the book should not pretend to be anything but a reprint, I yet hope that within its own limits it is fairly complete, and' that it will prove to be useful to students when they begin their work in the wards and casualty rooms, and useful also to surgical nurses and probationers.
