Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the inconsistency of performance associated with expansion joints in bridges, a Working Group was created to propose the means to improve their usage and reduce the incidence of premature failure and leakage. The research results of this Working Group (see accompanying report, TRL 236, above) have formed the basis for this guide, which sets out procedures and recommendations for the better use and procurement of bridge expansion joints. This practical guide takes the bridge engineer through selecting, specifying, purchasing, installing and maintaining an expansion joint to achieve good performance. It follows a logical sequence, beginning with a short background note and a description of the joint types and other terms used in the report and then goes on to cover the whole process of joint provision and maintenance. It includes details of whole life costing and optional procurement methods as an aid to joint selection, together with sketches of recommended details for joint installation.

Book excerpt: Many countries are exploring the use of concrete to improve the reliability of their road networks. However, many developers, agencies, and companies in the construction industry do not yet have sufficient experience in the use of concrete pavement. This can lead to poorly planned, supervised, or executed infrastructure that requires premature and costly repairs or maintenance. This guide explains the factors to investigate and considerations to evaluate as well as the potential risks and mistakes to avoid when planning and constructing concrete pavement. It is a comprehensive resource that will be especially useful for stakeholders in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many factors affect the amount of temperature-induced movement that occurs in a building and the extent to which this movement can occur before serious damage develops or extensive maintenance is required. In some cases joints are being omitted where they are needed, creating a risk of structural failures or causing unnecessary operations and maintenance costs. In other cases, expansion joints are being used where they are not required, increasing the initial cost of construction and creating space utilization problems. As of 1974, there were no nationally acceptable procedures for precise determination of the size and the location of expansion joints in buildings. Most designers and federal construction agencies individually adopted and developed guidelines based on experience and rough calculations leading to significant differences in the various guidelines used for locating and sizing expansion joints. In response to this complex problem, Expansion Joints in Buildings: Technical Report No. 65 provides federal agencies with practical procedures for evaluating the need for through-building expansion joints in structural framing systems. The report offers guidelines and criteria to standardize the practice of expansion joints in buildings and decrease problems associated with the misuse of expansions joints. Expansions Joints in Buildings: Technical Report No. 65 also makes notable recommendations concerning expansion, isolation, joints, and the manner in which they permit separate segments of the structural frame to expand and to contract in response to temperature fluctuations without adversely affecting the buildings structural integrity or serviceability.

Book excerpt: A Practical Guide to Piping and Valves for the Oil and Gas Industry covers how to select, test and maintain the right oil and gas valve. Each chapter focuses on a specific type of valve with a built-in structured table on valve selection. Covering both onshore and offshore projects, the book also gives an introduction to the most common types of corrosion in the oil and gas industry, including CO2, H2S, pitting, crevice, and more. A model to evaluate CO2 corrosion rate on carbon steel piping is introduced, along with discussions on bulk piping components, including fittings, gaskets, piping and flanges. Rounding out with chapters devoted to valve preservation to protect against harmful environments and factory acceptance testing, this book gives engineers and managers a much-needed tool to better understand today’s valve technology. Presents oil and gas examples and challenges relating to valves, including many illustrations from valves in different stages of projects Helps readers understand valve materials, testing, actuation, packing and preservation, also including a new model to evaluate CO2 corrosion rates on carbon steel piping Presents structured valve selection tables in each chapter to help readers pick the right valve for the right project

Book excerpt: Concise and readable practitioner focused guide to diagnosing the causes of cracks and movement in buildings The expanded and updated Second Edition of Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings shows how movement can manifest as cracking in the building fabric and provides a rigorous, structured approach to understanding the evidence to ensure the surveyor can confidently diagnose the cause and impact of any structural movement they encounter. The book is written in four parts, with part one describing the key principles of movement and cracking. Parts two and three describe the main features of common forms of movement and the associated crack patterns, with part two covering causes other than ground or foundation movement and part three covering movement caused by ground or foundations. Part four briefly describes the techniques used to arrest further movement or repair damage caused by movement. Topics covered in Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings include: First principles, including crack patterns and cracks, rotational movement, weak routes, load distribution, and movement and orientation Expansion cracking, cavity wall tie corrosion, roof spread, springing from deflected beams, and overloaded floors and beams Clay heave, uneven loading, eccentric loading on foundations, drains and drain trenches, differential foundation movement, and load concentrations on foundations Repair methods, including stitching in brickwork, reinforcing brick mortar joints, tie bars, restraint straps, underpinning, grouting, and root barriers Primarily intended for the relatively inexperienced surveyor or engineer, as well as undergraduate students, Practical Guide to Diagnosing Structural Movement in Buildings focuses on identification and diagnosis, helping to correctly diagnose problems while also demonstrating a methodical approach to show and record how the diagnosis was reached, which is critical in client satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Plant Design and Operations, Second Edition, explores design and operational considerations for oil and gas facilities, covering all stages of the plant cycle, with an emphasis on safety and risk. The oil and gas industry is constantly looking for cost optimization strategies, requiring plant-based personnel to expand their knowledge base outside their discipline or subject. Relevant reference materials are scattered throughout various official standards, while staff lack the immediate hands-on knowledge to safely facilitate the full operational life cycle of the plant. This second edition is a complete source of solutions for major process projects including offshore facilities, chemical plants, oil refineries, and pipelines. This single reference provides insight for safer operations and maintenance best practices. It has been updated with more focus on safety in design and operations, standards, and compliance, and more detailed information on equipment and system/component design. Explores design and operational considerations for oil and gas facilities, covering all stages of the plant cycle, with an emphasis on safety and risk Includes updated new chapters covering principles of design, security regulations, and human factors Includes more relevant equipment information covering storage tanks, valves, and control systems Remains the only source to provide hands-on solutions for process plants in the refining and chemical industries
