Download or read book Visually Impaired: a Practical Guide written by Andrew Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide practical information that is directly applicable to the lives of individuals with visual impairments. This book brushes aside abstract talk on the subject and focuses on concrete issues that are common to people who are visually impaired. Throughout the book, I draw on mainly two types of information to give the reader a more holistic view on how to tackle these different issues. The first type of information can be called objective, and consists of portraying a factual snapshot of what sort of information and resources are available for the visually impaired. This includes information on what kind of assistive technology is available, procedures to get accommodations in school, federal aid programs, and more. The second type of information can be called subjective, and consists of providing valuable insight learned from many years of experience with being visually impaired. For example, what accommodations can work best in the classroom, tips for interacting with others, drawbacks associated with certain pieces of technology, and more. These two types of information work together to provide a more nuanced perspective on tackling different issues relating to being visually impaired, and can be a useful guiding hand in the reader's own journey. Chapters Chapter 1: Assistive Technology Chapter 2: Early Education Chapter 3: College Chapter 4: Life After School Chapter 5: The Social World

Download or read book Foundations of Low Vision written by Anne Lesley Corn and published by American Foundation for the Blind. This book was released on 2010 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Low Vision: Clinical and Functional Perspectives, the ground-breaking text that highlighted the importance of focusing on the functional as well as the clinical implications of low vision, has been completely updated and expanded in this second edition. The revised edition goes even further in its presentation of how best to assess and support both children and adults with low vision and plan programs and services that optimize their functional vision and ability to lead productive and satisfying lives, based on individuals' actual abilities. Part 1, Personal and Professional Perspectives, provides the foundations of this approach, with chapters focused on the anatomy of the eye, medical causes of visual impairment, optics and low vision devices, and clinical low vision services, as well as psychological and social implications of low vision and the history of the field. Part 2 focuses on children and youths, providing detailed treatment of functional vision assessment, instruction, use of low vision devices, orientation and mobility, and assistive technology. Part 3 presents rehabilitation and employment issues for working-age adults and special considerations for older adults.

Book Synopsis Visual Impairment and Work by : Sally French
Download or read book Visual Impairment and Work written by Sally French and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of paid work for visually impaired people in the UK from the 18th century to the present day. It gives a voice to visually impaired people to talk about their working lives and documents the history of employment from their experience, an approach which is severely lacking in the current literature about visual impairment and employment. By analysing fifty in-depth face-to-face interviews with visually impaired people talking about their working lives (featuring those who have worked in traditional jobs such as telephony, physiotherapy and piano tuning, to those who have pursued more unusual occupations and professions), and grouping them according to occupation and framed by documentary, historical research, these stories can be situated in their broader political, economic, ideological and cultural contexts. The themes that emerge will help to inform present day policy and practice within a context of high unemployment amongst visually impaired people of working age. It is part of a growing literature which gives voice to disabled people about their own lives and which adds to the growing academic discipline of disability studies and the empowerment of disabled people.

Book Synopsis Visual Impairments by : National Research Council
Download or read book Visual Impairments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children and adults apply for disability benefits and claim that a visual impairment has limited their ability to function, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is required to determine their eligibility. To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.

Book Synopsis Working with Voice Disorders by : Stephanie Martin
Download or read book Working with Voice Disorders written by Stephanie Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential resource for clinicians of varying levels of experience from student to very specializer, "Working with Voice Disorders" provides practical insight and direction into all aspects of voice disorders from assessment and diagnosis to intervention and case management. This second edition retains the successful format of mixing theory and practice, a melding of scientific knowledge with clinical art, which was such a feature of the first edition. In recognition of changes in practice and theory over the past decade, it contains a wealth of new, up-to-date, evidence based material. This blends with a practical approach to clinical efficiencies and management of the voice service. The second edition of "Working with Voice Disorders" provides a sound theoretical framework to this specialism and also offers a rich variety of tried and tested, practical and photocopiable resource material, which is the result of the authors' wide experience, accumulated over several decades in the field of voice therapy. The multi-dimensional structure of the manual allows the clinician to look, not only at specific aspects of patient management, but also at aspects such as clinical effectiveness, clinical efficiencies and service management. The authors' aim is that this resource should provide clinicians with a pragmatic, patient-centred, easy to use and accessible resource, facilitating and informing decision-making along the clinical journey from referral to discharge. The contents of this title include: Anatomy overview; The Spectrum of Voice Disorders; The Case History; Assessment; Treatment Strategies; Management Strategies; Service Provision; Over 50 pages of practical, photocopiable exercises. Photocopiable Appendices: Voice Care Advice; Voice Disorders Summary Chart; Voice Assessment Sheet; Voice Record Sheet; and, Voice Diary.
