Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sermon on the Mount: A Practical Exposition There is no plant in the spiritual garden of the Church of England which at the present moment needs more diligent watering and tending than the practical, devotional study of Holy Scripture. The extent to which spiritual sloth, or reaction against Protestant individualism, or the excuse of critical difficulties is allowed to minister to the neglect of this most necessary practice, is greatly to be deplored. It is surprising in how few parts of the Bible critical difficulties, be they what they may, need be any bar to its practical use. Download or read book An Exposition of the Sermon on the Mount written by Pink Walkington Arthur and published by Martino Fine Books. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1950 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Arthur Walkington Pink (1886-1952) was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. After Pink's death, his works were republished by a number of publishing houses and reached a much wider audience as a result. "The Sermon on the Mount" (the first and lengthiest of the five discourses of Jesus in Matthew) is one of the most rich and interesting, yet misunderstood sections of sacred Scripture. This sermon is one of the most studied, quoted, yet also ignored sections of God's Word. The Savior's sermon is crucial-for it is one of the lengthiest, most complete expositions of what Christ expects from His disciples in their attitudes, behavior and service to God. Pink's study on "The Sermon on the Mount" consists of a series of expository articles on the subject.

Download or read book An Exposition of the Sermon on the Mount written by Arthur W. Pink and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Matthew's Gospel breaks the long silence which followed the ministry of Malachi, the last of the Old Testament prophets. The silence extended for four hundred years, and during that time God was withdrawn from Israel. Throughout this period there were no angelic manifestations, no prophet spoke for Jehovah, and though the Chosen People were so rely pressed, yet were there no Divine interpositions on their behalf. For four centuries God shut His people up to His written Word. Again and again had He promised to send the Messiah, and from Malachi onwards there was a believing remnant who anxiously awaited the appearing of the predicted One. It is at this point that Matthew picks up the thread dropped by the last of the Old Testament prophets. The first purpose of Matthew's Gospel is to present Christ as the Fulfiller of the promises made to Israel and the prophecies which related to their Messiah. This is why the word "fulfilled" occurs in Matthew fifteen times, and why there are more quotations from the Old Testament in his Gospel than in the remaining three added together." Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Book excerpt: This volume is not, as a glance at any page will show, a translation of St. Augustine's 'Commentary on the Sermon on the Mount', but an attempt to draw from the whole circle of his writings (that one of course included), what of most valuable he has contributed for the elucidation, or for the turning to practical uses, of this portion of Holy Scripture. . . . It is not my intention to offer in the pages which follow any estimate of the worth and significance of St. Augustine's theology, regarded as a whole; but so far as possible to restrict myself to the subject indicated by thte title of this Essay, and to consider him in a single light, that is, as an interpreter of Scripture. -- from the Preface
Book Synopsis Exalting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount by : Danny Akin
Download or read book Exalting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount written by Danny Akin and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exalting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is part of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series. Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ-centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition presented as sermons and divided into chapters that conclude with a “Reflect & Discuss” section, making this series ideal for small group study, personal devotion, and even sermon preparation. It’s not academic but rather presents an easy reading, practical and friendly commentary. The author of Exalting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is Daniel L. Akin.
