Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Portraiture of the Roman Catholic Religion Sincerely devoted to the great cause of Catholic Emancipation, yet zealously attached to the religion of Protestants, I hesitated for some time on the propriety and usefulness of publishing the result of my inquiries concerning the faith and worship of Roman Catholics. To encounter the prejudices and mistakes of my friends, and my enemies, if I have any, by taking, what some will call, a favourable view of the Church of Rome, presented no contemptible obstacle to my mind. Yet, convinced that hitherto no Protestant writer has done full justice to the subject, I was not willing to forego the pleasure of, at least, endeavouring to shew, that the religion of our ancestors has been mistaken, and that unworthy and groundless alarms are excited in consequence of that mistake. The views of Catholics respecting civil authority I have traced at some length, in various printed documents and the Ar ticles of Faith I have carefully collected from such works of acknowledged autho rity as have fallen in my way nor have I spared either labour or expense in pro curing correct information on these several subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fifty Years in the Church of Rome" is a book written by Father Charles Chiniquy. Chiniquy was a catholic priest born in Quebec, Canada and this book, his autobiography, is one of the best selling books in Canadian history. Chiniquy's book tells the story of the author's involvement in the Catholic Church, beginning with scenes of a little boy memorizing passages from the Bible. Chiniquy so loved the words of Jesus that he dedicated his life to the scriptures and became a Catholic priest. While serving as a priest, Chiniquy grew increasingly disillusioned with the institution of Catholicism and disgusted with many of the other men that served as priests. Chiniquy tells tales of the alcoholism, womanizing, and abuse that was common amongst other priests. The book discusses Chiniquy's split with Catholicism, excommunication from the church, and eventual rebirth as a Presbyterian pastor. The book also details Chiniquy's relationship with a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln, and the author's hypothesis that the Jesuits were responsible for his assassination. "Fifty Years in the Church of Rome" is a fascinating account of life in the Catholic church. A controversial book since the day it was published, Chiniquy's work is not an unfair or biased account of Catholicism. It is clear that the author still holds Catholicism in high regard, however was simply unable to overlook the misdoings of other religious men within the Church. This book holds historical significance, as it brought to light many controversies that still dog the Catholic Church many years later. Readers interested in Catholicism and the religious path of a former priest will find this to be a highly engrossing book. Touching and ripe with emotion, Chiniquy's work was a sensation upon its original publication and remains a highly important work to this day. "Fifty Years in the Church of Rome" is highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Catholics: Confirmed by Scripture, and Attested by the Fathers of the Five First Centureis of the Church It may be, that I have occasionally erred in the translation of some passages, not always very in telligible; but should any such errors be discovered, I trust, it will not be in any point of moment. On some occasions, the original of certain clauses is given. It was my wish to be literal and plain. As order and precision are necessary for the attain ment of accurate knowledge, I thought it necessary, in quoting the Fathers, to preserve the chrono logical series of their lives; so that each authority should take its proper place. I, therefore, marked each century, and quoted the fathers, who belonged to it, in the order in which they lived. This is repeated under caph Proposition. To each name are, likewise, added the letters L. C. Or G. C. De noting whether they belonged to the Latin or the Greek church; and when any Father is, the first time, introduced, I state in a Note, who he was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Moral and Political Tendency of the Religion Called Roman Catholic The result of this examination is now offered to the public, with all that respect which is due to its awful decisions; but not without that confidence which either conscious truth, or at least the love of it, is wont to inspire. The interests of justice, as well as of truth, are here equally concerned: the subject is therefore both important and interesting. He who fondly believes every tale forged by calumny against the Papists, risks the violation, not only of truth, but also of humanity. Cruelty is here connected with error, and prejudice with injustice. In other cafes, a mistake may be committed without injury, and propagated without any pernicious consequence; but, where the security and tranquillity of many thousands of fellow-creatures are involved, who does not fee that prejudice and malice, error and resentment, are almost equally reprehensible, and equally mischievous? Truth and candour, therefore, direct all, who have any value for either, to form their judgment concerning the political and moral character of Roman Catholics, not from the partial misrepresentations of their avowed enemies, but from an attentive view of their genuine and undisguised principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church, the Renaissance and Protestantism You have been pleased to recall that I myself, long before you, ' devoted eight years of public teach ing in the Sorbonne to the study of this event, bringing to bear thereon the triple light of theology, history, and the Fathers. I willingly accept the thanks you offer me for having lent you the numerous notes which I collected during that most laborious period of my priesthood; and for my part I con gratulate you on having made such good use of them. And yet you have by no means let them hamper you, for you have entirely preserved the freedom of your plan, your explanations, and your conclusions. I shall not undertake an analysis of the lectures in which you have summarised the problems of philo sophy, theology, morals, and even of social economy, involved in the study of Protestantism, which will soon have lived for four centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Catholicism, or the Doctrines of the Church of Rome Briefly Examined in the Light of Scripture The writer, in citing texts of Scripture, has noted the fact that some passages of our Authorized Version have been modified in the Revised Version of the English Bible. The Douay Version, the English trans lation of the Latin Vulgate accredited by Roman Catholic authorities, has been always borne in mind, and in proof passages where any real difference exists notice has been called to its renderings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Religion: A Statement of Christian Teaching and History No less remarkable than the external solidarity of the church, and indeed the secret of it, is her consist ent and coherent system of teachings and practices. From the mighty moral principles that reach down to the depths of human nature, to the symbolic regalia of her holiday pageants, all the church's doctrines of faith and precepts of morals and forms of worship are related to a few great truths, and are, in their time and place, the natural and proper expression of those truths.
