Book excerpt: The Maple Summer Workshop and Symposium, MSWS '94, reflects the growing commu nity of Maple users around the world. This volume contains the contributed papers. A careful inspection of author affiliations will reveal that they come from North America, Europe, and Australia. In fact, fifteen come from the United States, two from Canada, one from Australia, and nine come from Europe. Of European papers, two are from Ger many, two are from the Netherlands, two are from Spain, and one each is from Switzerland, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. More important than the geographical diversity is the intellectual range of the contributions. We begin to see in this collection of works papers in which Maple is used in an increasingly flexible way. For example, there is an application in computer science that uses Maple as a tool to create a new utility. There is an application in abstract algebra where Maple has been used to create new functionalities for computing in a rational function field. There are applications to geometrical optics, digital signal processing, and experimental design.

Book excerpt: The development of powerful computer algebra systems has considerably ex tended the scope of problems of scientific computing which can now be solved successfully with the aid of computers. However, as the field of applications of computer algebra in scientific computing becomes broader and more complex, there is a danger of separation between theory, systems, and applications. For this reason, we felt the need to bring together the researchers who now ap ply the tools of computer algebra for the solution of problems in scientific computing, in order to foster new and closer interactions. CASC'99 is the second conference devoted to applications of computer al gebra in scientific computing. The first conference in this sequence, CASC'98, was held 20-24 April 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia. This volume contains revised versions of the papers submitted by the par ticipants and accepted by the program committee after a thorough reviewing process. The collection of papers included in the proceedings covers various topics of computer algebra methods, algorithms and software applied to scien tific computing: symbolic-numeric analysis and solving differential equations, efficient computations with polynomials, groups, matrices and other related objects, special purpose programming environments, application to physics, mechanics, optics and to other areas. In particular, a significant group of papers deals with applications of com puter algebra methods for the solution of current problems in group theory, which mostly arise in mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: When a student of mathematics studies abstract algebra, he or she inevitably faces questions in the vein of, "What is abstract algebra" or "What makes it abstract?" Algebra, in its broadest sense, describes a way of thinking about classes of sets equipped with binary operations. In high school algebra, a student explores properties of operations (+, −, ×, and ÷) on real numbers. Abstract algebra studies properties of operations without specifying what types of number or object we work with. Any theorem established in the abstract context holds not only for real numbers but for every possible algebraic structure that has operations with the stated properties. This textbook intends to serve as a first course in abstract algebra. The selection of topics serves both of the common trends in such a course: a balanced introduction to groups, rings, and fields; or a course that primarily emphasizes group theory. The writing style is student-centered, conscientiously motivating definitions and offering many illustrative examples. Various sections or sometimes just examples or exercises introduce applications to geometry, number theory, cryptography and many other areas. This book offers a unique feature in the lists of projects at the end of each section. the author does not view projects as just something extra or cute, but rather an opportunity for a student to work on and demonstrate their potential for open-ended investigation. The projects ideas come in two flavors: investigative or expository. The investigative projects briefly present a topic and posed open-ended questions that invite the student to explore the topic, asking and to trying to answer their own questions. Expository projects invite the student to explore a topic with algebraic content or pertain to a particular mathematician’s work through responsible research. The exercises challenge the student to prove new results using the theorems presented in the text. The student then becomes an active participant in the development of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, revised, consists of XI Parts and 28 Chapters covering all areas of mathematics. It is a tool for students, scientists, engineers, students of many disciplines, teachers, professionals, writers and also for a general reader with an interest in mathematics and in science. It provides a wide range of mathematical concepts, definitions, propositions, theorems, proofs, examples, and numerous illustrations. The difficulty level can vary depending on chapters, and sustained attention will be required for some. The structure and list of Parts are quite classical: I. Foundations of Mathematics, II. Algebra, III. Number Theory, IV. Geometry, V. Analytic Geometry, VI. Topology, VII. Algebraic Topology, VIII. Analysis, IX. Category Theory, X. Probability and Statistics, XI. Applied Mathematics. Appendices provide useful lists of symbols and tables for ready reference. Extensive cross-references allow readers to find related terms, concepts and items (by page number, heading, and objet such as theorem, definition, example, etc.). The publisher’s hope is that this book, slightly revised and in a convenient format, will serve the needs of readers, be it for study, teaching, exploration, work, or research.

Book excerpt: Popular computer algebra systems such as Maple, Macsyma, Mathematica, and REDUCE are now basic tools on most computers. Efficient algorithms for various algebraic operations underlie all these systems. Computer algebra, or algorithmic algebra, studies these algorithms and their properties and represents a rich intersection of theoretical computer science with classical mathematics. Fundamental Problems of Algorithmic Algebra provides a systematic and focused treatment of a collection of core problemsthe computational equivalents of the classical Fundamental Problem of Algebra and its derivatives. Topics covered include the GCD, subresultants, modular techniques, the fundamental theorem of algebra, roots of polynomials, Sturm theory, Gaussian lattice reduction, lattices and polynomial factorization, linear systems, elimination theory, Grobner bases, and more. Features · Presents algorithmic ideas in pseudo-code based on mathematical concepts and can be used with any computer mathematics system · Emphasizes the algorithmic aspects of problems without sacrificing mathematical rigor · Aims to be self-contained in its mathematical development · Ideal for a first course in algorithmic or computer algebra for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students

This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra, as a subdiscipline of mathematics, arguably has a history going back some 4000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. The history, however, of what is recognized today as high school algebra is much shorter, extending back to the sixteenth century, while the history of what practicing mathematicians call "modern algebra" is even shorter still. The present volume provides a glimpse into the complicated and often convoluted history of this latter conception of algebra by juxtaposing twelve episodes in the evolution of modern algebra from the early nineteenth-century work of Charles Babbage on functional equations to Alexandre Grothendieck's mid-twentieth-century metaphor of a ``rising sea'' in his categorical approach to algebraic geometry. In addition to considering the technical development of various aspects of algebraic thought, the historians of modern algebra whose work is united in this volume explore such themes as the changing aims and organization of the subject as well as the often complex lines of mathematical communication within and across national boundaries. Among the specific algebraic ideas considered are the concept of divisibility and the introduction of non-commutative algebras into the study of number theory and the emergence of algebraic geometry in the twentieth century. The resulting volume is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of modern mathematics in general and modern algebra in particular. It will be of particular interest to mathematicians and historians of mathematics.
