Lyman C. Draper, the patient and persevering originator of them. Mr. D. S. Durrie, the librarian, has held that office since Jan. 1, 1856, and has taken an active part in the management to the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisconsin The history of Wisconsin concerns itself with three political regimes - those of New France, Great Britain, and the United States. Its civilization, however, is of the first and third, for the influence of the second was negligible. When, in 1816, American troops first took possession of Green Bay and Prairie du Chien, the country between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River was still French to the core. Indeed, still another decade was to pass before the Americanizing process began to show results. These came, not by transforming the character or habits of our mild-mannered and non-progressive habitans and voyageurs, who remained quite unchanged through full two centuries of residence in Wisconsin, but by means of the influx of New Yorkers and New Englanders, who gradually crowded them to the wall. It was nearly twenty years after American occupation began, before the fur-trade, now managed by Americans but almost wholly manned by French, ceased to he Wisconsin's dominating industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Green County, Wisconsin: Together With Sketches of Its Towns and Villages, Educational, Civil, Military and Political History; Portraits of Prominent Persons, and Biographies of Representative Citizens In the general history of the county, as well as in the sketches of its city, towns and vil lages, the reader will find that incidents, reminiscences and anecdotes are recorded with a variety and completeness commensurate with their importance. Herein is furnished (and this is said with confidence) to the present generation and to those which follow it, a valuable reflex of the times and deeds of the pioneers. It has been truly said that a people that take no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors will never achieve anything to be remem bered with pride by remote descendants. It is believed that, in the following pages, there is erected a lasting monument to the memory Of the pioneer men and women of Green county. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rediscover Wisconsin history from the very beginning. A Short History of Wisconsin recounts the landscapes, people, and traditions that have made the state the multifaceted place it is today. With an approach both comprehensive and accessible, historian Erika Janik covers several centuries of Wisconsin's remarkable past, showing how the state was shaped by the same world wars, waves of new inhabitants, and upheavals in society and politics that shaped the nation. Swift, authoritative, and compulsively readable, A Short History of Wisconsin commences with the glaciers that hewed the region's breathtaking terrain, the Native American cultures who first called it home, and French explorers and traders who mapped what was once called "Mescousing." Janik moves through the Civil War and two world wars, covers advances in the rights of women, workers, African Americans, and Indians, and recent shifts involving the environmental movement and the conservative revolution of the late 20th century. Wisconsin has hosted industries from fur-trapping to mining to dairying, and its political landscape sprouted figures both renowned and reviled, from Fighting Bob La Follette to Joseph McCarthy. Janik finds the story of a state not only in the broad strokes of immigration and politics, but also in the daily lives shaped by work, leisure, sports, and culture. A Short History of Wisconsin offers a fresh understanding of how Wisconsin came into being and how Wisconsinites past and present share a deep connection to the land itself.

This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iowa Journal of History and Politics, Vol. 6 It had been hoped that the past services of George W. J ones would entitle him to a unanimous election. But a few Whigs were willing to administer a measure of partisan politics to the infant Territory. In the campaign lasting hardly a month the past records and capabilities of J ones and Meeker were paraded for comparison. Personal and local considerations, however, such as the location of county seats, internal improvements, and a discussion of the vari ous claims of Burlington, Belmont, Du Buque, and Madison for the capital of the Territory constitute the principal record of the first political activity in Iowa. The popularity of Col. G. W. J ones was general through out the Territory. It was he whose efforts had secured the passage of the Act of April 20, 1836, establishing the original Territory of Wisconsin, and the voters generally believed that his election was necessary to secure the best interests of the young Territory in matters of National legislation.
