Book excerpt: Hold High the Torch, the first of a series of regimental and squadron histories by the Historical Branch, G-3 Division, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps, is designed primarily to acquaint the members of the 4th Marines, past and present, with the history of their regiment. In addition, it is hoped this volume will enlarge public understanding of the Marine Corps’ worth both in limited war and as a force in readiness. During most of its existence the 4th Marines was not engaged in active military operations, but service of the regiment in China, the Dominican Republic, and off the west coast of Mexico, was typical of the Marine Corps’ support of national policy. In many of its combat operations, the 4th Marines was only one element of a much larger force. In other instances, as in the Dominican Republic and China, the regiment was a subordinate unit in situations which were essentially political and diplomatic. Only so much of these higher echelon activities as are essential to an understanding of the 4th Marines story have been told. This is a regimental history and the focus is therefore on the 4th Marines.

Troops in the LSTs began debarking from them in landing vehicles, tracked (LVTs). Control vessels containing Navy and Marine personnel with their radio gear took their positions displaying flags indicating which beach approaches they controlled."

As a leader, I believe all members of the team are important. Our civilian shipmates are essential to the success of our mission. As a military leader, I believe, as the Sailor creed says, “I proudly serve my country's Navy combat team with Honor, Courage and Commitment. I am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all”. I cannot over emphasize the importance of leadership from E-1 to O-6, everyone has a part; I expect officers to lead from the front by setting the example. Be sure that regularly scheduled performance counseling sessions are conducted for military and civilian employees. Cover the good which should be sustained as well as the areas which need improvement. Although I like to be informed, I believe in allowing leaders to lead, managers to manage. A big part of my job is to provide you the support systems necessary for you to accomplish your mission. Tell me what you need and don't worry how it will be resourced. Let me worry about that.
