Download or read book The Reformation in Britain and Ireland written by Ian Hazlett and published by T&T Clark. This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a new and wide-ranging introduction to the Reformation throughout the British Isles. Full treatment is given to the fascinating and often very different but interrelated experiences in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. This approach is unique. Previous introductions have invariably concentrated on England, with lesser sections on Wales and Scotland, often ignoring Ireland altogether. The book is more than a modern introduction, survey and summary of the Reformation period. Ian Hazlett provides fresh research and critical analysis, which will be of considerable interest to a new generation of scholars and students. The material is written and organized in a highly readable and accessible form. Here is a well-balanced introduction and resource for non-specialists as well as scholars and students.

Book Synopsis Reformation in Britain and Ireland by : Felicity Heal
Download or read book Reformation in Britain and Ireland written by Felicity Heal and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-03-20 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the Reformation in England and Wales, Ireland and Scotland has usually been treated by historians as a series of discrete national stories. Reformation in Britain and Ireland draws upon the growing genre of writing about British History to construct an innovative narrative of religious change in the four countries/three kingdoms. The text uses a broadly chronological framework to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-Reformation churches; the political crises of the break with Rome; the development of Protestantism and changes in popular religious culture. The tools of conversion - the Bible, preaching and catechising - are accorded specific attention, as is doctrinal change. It is argued that political calculations did most to determine the success or failure of reformation, though the ideological commitment of a clerical elite was also of central significance.
Book Synopsis The Covenanted Reformation by : James Kerr
Download or read book The Covenanted Reformation written by James Kerr and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has been brought up to date and revised to drink from the wells of its zealous and hearty resolve for the truth by those who both preached and taught the doctrine which stood behind both the National Covenant in Scotland, and Solemn League and Covenant. These documents create a religious and binding foundation for the framers of the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Catechisms. What was their purpose? To uphold the “reformation and defense of religion.” They desired this, 1) to preserve “the reformed religion in the Church of Scotland, in doctrine, worship, discipline, and government, against our common enemies,” and 2) to bring about the “reformation of religion in the kingdoms of England and Ireland, in doctrine, worship, discipline, and government, according to the Word of GOD, and the example of the best reformed Churches.” Such a consensus of unity on the issue of doctrine should be a hearty witness to the 21st century’s church. Authors include Samuel Rutherford, James Kerr, Alexander Henderson, Philip Nye, Thomas Case, Joseph Caryl, Edmund Calamy, Robert Douglas, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in the study of the Reformation period within the three kingdoms of Britain, revolutionizing the way in which scholars think about the relationships between England, Scotland and Ireland. Nevertheless, it is a fact that the story of the British Reformation is still dominated by studies of England, an imbalance that this book will help to right. By adopting an international perspective, the essays in this volume look at the motives, methods and impact of enforcing the Protestant Reformation in Ireland and Scotland. The juxtaposition of these two countries illuminates the similarities and differences of their social and political situations while qualifying many of the conclusions of recent historical work in each country. As well as Investigating what 'reformation' meant in the early modern period, and examining its literal, rhetorical, doctrinal, moral and political implications, the volume also explores what enforcing these various reformations could involve. Taken as a whole, this volume offers a fascinating insight into how the political authorities in Scotland and Ireland attempted, with varying degrees of success, to impose Protestantism on their countries. By comparing the two situations, and placing them in the wider international picture, our understanding of European confessionalization is further enhanced.
