Book Synopsis Words at Play by : Felicia Hardison Londré
Download or read book Words at Play written by Felicia Hardison Londré and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this encompassing and accessible introduction to dramaturgy, Felicia Hardison Londre promotes the dramaturgical essay as both an art form and as a method for improving creative writing skills. "Words at Play: Creative Writing and Dramaturgy "includes Londre s essays on plays produced at several regional professional theatre companies interspersed with instructive examples for writing more clearly, economically, and compellingly. Beginning with an introduction that outlines the purpose of the dramaturgical essay as well as its usefulness as a tool for teaching how to write for the theatre, Londre provides numerous examples of this specialized literary genre culled from program essays she has written for Missouri Repertory Theatre, Nebraska Shakespeare Festival, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, American Heartland Theatre, and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. "Words at Play: Creative Writing and Dramaturgy "contains more than sixty complete essays and pertinent selections from twenty others. Drawing on personal and professional experiences as a teacher and dramaturg, Londre considers plays from timeless classics, including those of Shakespeare and Chekhov, to contemporary favorites and a few unusual and largely unknown pieces. "Words at Play: Creative Writing and Dramaturgy" furthermore incorporates introductory paragraphs that are informal and personal yet cogent and critical, providing readers with object lessons in both writing style and analysis. Taking the reader into her confidence, Londre also shows how a dramaturg develops a print relationship with other theatre artists and the community. A foreword by Royal Shakespeare Company associate artist Barry Kyle addresses the evolving role of the dramaturg in Britain and America. Dakin Williams, brother of playwright Tennessee Williams, provides a letter."

Book Synopsis How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs by : Charles E. Nichols
Download or read book How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs written by Charles E. Nichols and published by Charles Nichols. This book was released on 2008-08-20 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for high school students and beginners. It avoids using complicated grammar. The examples are kept simple. In many cases the hieroglyphs are "unrolled" - each hieroglyphic word is presented to the student one hieroglyph at a time, just as we write an English word one letter at a time. Each hieroglyph is treated as if it were a letter. This makes it much easier for the beginning student. Volume 1 consists of a series of simple lessons which when completed will enable the student to read many simple hieroglyphic sentences and significant parts of more complex sentences. The grammar presented is "Middle Egyptian" which is the most common version taught. It is not necessary to have previously studied any other foreign language. In many ways, learning ancient Egyptian will be easier for the student who has never studied a foreign language before.
Book Synopsis Postcolonial Hauntings by : Sushmita Chatterjee
Download or read book Postcolonial Hauntings written by Sushmita Chatterjee and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often examined separately, play and hauntings in fact act together to frame postcolonial issues. Sushmita Chatterjee showcases their braided workings in social and political fabrics. Drawing on this intertwined idea of play and hauntings, Chatterjee goes to the heart of conundrums within transnational postcolonial feminisms by examining the impossible echoes of translations, differing renditions of queer, and the possibilities of solidarity beyond the fraternal friendships that cement nation-states. Meaning-plays, or slippages through language systems as we move from one language to another, play a pivotal role in a global world. As Chatterjee shows, an attentiveness to meaning-plays discerns the past and present, here and there, and moves us toward responsive ethics in our theories and activisms. Insightful and stimulating, Postcolonial Hauntings centers the inextricable work of play and hauntings as a braided ethics for postcolonial transnational struggles.
Book Synopsis The Drama Dictionary by : Terry Hodgson
Download or read book The Drama Dictionary written by Terry Hodgson and published by New Amsterdam Books. This book was released on 1998-04-21 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference work is designed to be a single source to which readers may turn for guidance on dramatic theory and practice. It therefore concentrates on critical and technical concepts and terms rather than on theatre history or biography. The book contains some 1300 entries varying in length from a few words to several hundred. The terms included relate to the forms of drama (e.g. epic, mime, farce, comedy of manners, tragi-comedy, etc.); to different kinds of stage (thrust, picture-frame, arena, etc.); to technical stage terms (tabs, proscenium arch, sightlines, etc.); to acting terms, including colloquialisms (fluff, corpse-as well as duologue, soliloquy, cross below, upstage, etc.) They also include the critical terms of important theoreticians (e.g. superobjective, magic 'if', throughline, alienation, montage) and the obvious foreign terms (hamartia, peripeteia, etc.). Dramatic movements and styles are described (naturalism, expressionism, neo-classical, Jacobean, etc.), together with terms relating to costume (e.g. buskins), character types (of, say, the Commedia dell'Arte) and dramatic structure (climax, curtain, pace and tempo, episode, chorus, etc.). The entries are fully cross-referenced, and are supported by ample suggestions for further reading and a selection of line drawings illustrating key points in the text.
