Book excerpt: Ages 4 to 8 years. One day a pig called Pete met a cow called Carlotta. A tap-dancing cow called Carlotta. She was having a rest. Pete made friends with Carlotta. She was tap-dancing her way around the world! She tap-danced here. She tap-danced there. Carlotta tap-danced everywhere. Pete told Carlotta he wanted to tap-dance too. Carlotta taught Pete to 'step and shuffle'. She taught him to 'heel and toe'. Carlotta taught Pete to 'slap and flap'! She told Pete he was flamboyant! Together, they travelled the world. But sometimes Carlotta was cantankerous . . . she swished her tail, moo'd loudly and stamped her feet on the ground! So, Pete flew home. Pete told a friend that Carlotta was nice, but sometimes she was cantankerous. His friend told Pete that we should like our friends for just being themselves. Carlotta and Pete the purple flying pig became friends once again. Putting on bow ties and top hats and tails, off they went around the world. They tap-danced here. They tap-danced there. Carlotta and Pete tap-danced everywhere.

Book excerpt: Geoffrey Firmin, a former British consul, has come to Quauhnahuac, Mexico. His debilitating malaise is drinking, an activity that has overshadowed his life. On the most fateful day of the consul's life--the Day of the Dead, 1938--his wife, Yvonne, arrives in Quauhnahuac, inspired by a vision of life together away from Mexico and the circumstances that have driven their relationship to the brink of collapse. She is determined to rescue Firmin and their failing marriage, but her mission is further complicated by the presence of Hugh, the consul's half brother, and Jacques, a childhood friend. The events of this one significant day unfold against an unforgettable backdrop of a Mexico at once magical and diabolical. Under the Volcano remains one of literature's most powerful and lyrical statements on the human condition, and a brilliant portrayal of one man's constant struggle against the elemental forces that threaten to destroy him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hal Wallis might not be as well known as David O. Selznick or Samuel Goldwyn, but the films he produced -- Casablanca, Jezebel, Now Voyager, The Life of Emile Zola, Becket, True Grit, and many other classics (as well as scores of Elvis movies) -- have certainly endured. As producer of numerous films, Wallis made an indelible mark on the course of America's film industry, but his contributions are often overlooked and no full-length study has yet assessed his incredible career. A former office boy and salesman, Wallis first engaged with the business of film as the manager of a Los Angeles movie theater in 1922. He attracted the notice of the Warner brothers, who hired him as a publicity assistant. Within three months he was director of the department, and appointments to studio manager and production executive quickly followed. Wallis went on to oversee dozens of productions and formed his own production company in 1944. Bernard F. Dick draws on numerous sources such as Wallis's personal production files and exclusive interviews with many of his contemporaries to finally tell the full story of his illustrious career. Dick combines his knowledge of behind-the-scenes Hollywood with fascinating anecdotes to create a portrait of one of Hollywood's early power players.

Book excerpt: Indie Next List Pick · ALA Notable Children’s Book · Texas Bluebonnet Award Winner “A winning tale of love.” —Kirkus (starred review) Perfect for fans of Charlotte’s Web and The One and Only Ivan, Saving Winslow is an uplifting modern classic in the making about a young boy who befriends an ailing newborn donkey and nurses him back to health, from New York Times bestseller and Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech. Louie doesn't have the best luck when it comes to nurturing small creatures. So when his father brings home a sickly newborn mini donkey, he's determined to save him. He names him Winslow. Taking care of him helps Louie feel closer to his brother, Gus, who is far, far away in the army. Everyone worries that Winslow won't survive, especially Louie’s quirky new friend, Nora, who has experienced loss of her own. But as Louie's bond with Winslow grows, surprising and life-altering events prove that this fragile donkey is stronger than anyone could have imagined. Written in the spirit of Creech favorites Moo and Love That Dog, this standout tale about love and friendship and letting go will tug at the heartstrings. “This heartwarming story is sure to be a hit with fans of E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web and Kate DiCamillo’s Because of Winn-Dixie.” —School Library Journal (starred review) “Creech packs a tremendous amount of emotion between the lines of her understated prose. Animal lovers in particular will relish Louie’s hard-won triumphs and find joy in Winslow’s strength.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Woven into this narrative is a convincing portrayal of human growth and blossoming—the story is told simply but subtly, celebrating the unexpected strength of the vulnerable.” —Horn Book (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s, with the end of the revolution, the Soviet government began investing resources and energy into creating a new type of book for the first generation of young Soviet readers. In a sense, these early books for children were the ABCs of Soviet modernity; creatively illustrated and intricately designed, they were manuals and primers that helped the young reader enter the field of politics through literature. Children’s books provided the basic vocabulary and grammar for understanding new, post-revolutionary realities, but they also taught young readers how to perceive modern events and communist practices. Relying on a process of dual-media rendering, illustrated books presented propaganda as a simple, repeatable narrative or verse, while also casting it in easily recognizable graphic images. A vehicle of ideology, object of affection, and product of labour all in one, the illustrated book for the young Soviet reader emerged as an important cultural phenomenon. Communist in its content, it was often avant-gardist in its form. Spotlighting three thematic threads – communist goals, pedagogy, and propaganda – The Pedagogy of Images traces the formation of a mass-modern readership through the creation of the communist-inflected visual and narrative conventions that these early readers were meant to appropriate.

Book excerpt: Ages 4 to 8 years. While Pete the Purple Flying Pig is flying around the world he meets a cat called Kitty from Kathmandu under the Eiffel Tower. She is fluffy white and wears a feathery boa and a floppy hat. They eat frog's legs and snails in a sidewalk cafe. They visit the Louvre and see Mona Lisa smile. Pete tells Kitty he wants her to fly around the world with him and he tries to teach her how to fly...but she can't! She tries, and tries but there's no way a cat called Kitty can fly and she feels very sad because of this. Pete the Purple Flying Pig also feels very sad because he wanted to fly around the world with Kitty, and now he can't. He flies off home and while there Pete the Purple Flying Pig very soon discovers that finding a friend is even better than flying around the world! He rushes back to tell Kitty what he has discovered and finds her staring at the stars and imagining flying around the world with Pete. Suddenly, there's a loud knock at her door -- it was Pete - with a big bunch of flowers! Kitty smiles just like Mona Lisa, and Pete the Purple Flying Pig tells her "I don't give two 'oinks' if you can't fly. I like you just the way you are -- Kitty from Kathmandu!".
