Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Indian Children, Vol. 1 These white men gave the Indians their name. It was in this way. When Columbus first landed on this continent, he found some strange-looking people. He thought he had reached India, you remember, so he called the people Indians, but they would better be called the native Americans or Red Men. These white men found the Indians in all parts of the country living in tribes. Each tribe had a chief whom all respected and obeyed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joyful Star: Indian Stories for Camp Fire Girls In this collection of legends, my aim is to present to the reader a picture of the life and the ideals of the Indian maiden and mother as the;r are illustrated in the legends, folk-tales, and a few historical accounts from various tribes and nations of Indians in North and South America. The making of such a collection has proven a much more difficult piece of work than I had anticipated; but it has been most interesting and profitable. This work has opened wide a new world to me; it has filled me with respect and admiration for the Indian woman. It seems that the Indian woman is Wise, is brave, and withal is gentle, modest and affection ate: she is a devoted wife, living her life of labour with quiet cheerfulness: she is a tender mother, training her children with the most pre cise care, infusing into the minds of her young sons the ambition to become the bravest war riors, or the most skilled hunters, and educating her little daughters, from their very babyhood, to fill their place in the tribal life with the great est efficiency. From almost every phase of the Indian woman's life and experience, her white sister may learn lessons of inestimable value. With this thought, I am sending out these legends for the use of Camp Fire Girls and for all maidens who would turn aside for a time from the noisy highway, and follow the quiet trails through the forest, where once walked the Indian maiden with reverent love for the smallest flower at her feet, for it, too, partook of the nature of the Great Spirit, who cared for his children of the forest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wigwam Stories Told by North American Indians These stories, told by and about the Indians, have been gathered from various sources. They show, among other interesting facts, that the love of the beautiful, and also of the humorous, dwells in the heart of the wild Indian. There are no adaptations from Longfellow's poem of Hiawatha, but the compiler has gone directly to the works of Schoolcraft, whose writings were Longfellow's inspiration. Schoolcraft's Journal states his belief that Menabozho and Hiawatha were one and the same person, the latter name being preferred as more musical. Hence, Longfellow chose it as the name of his Indian hero. Horatio Hale and other authorities on Iroquois history differ strongly from Schoolcraft on this point, and maintain that the name of Hiawatha, or Hey-anwatha, refers only to an Iroquois statesman or deity. Menabozho, or The Foolish One, is very real to the Chippewa or Ojibway Indian of Minnesota. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A #1 New York Times bestseller, this innovative and wildly funny read-aloud by award-winning humorist/actor B.J. Novak will turn any reader into a comedian—a perfect gift for any special occasion! You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here’s how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . . BLORK. Or BLUURF. Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY. Cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly, The Book with No Pictures is one that kids will beg to hear again and again. (And parents will be happy to oblige.)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Indian History: Being the Annals of India Retold in Narratives The work throughout has been written for the people of India, as well as for those of the British Isles. Twenty years ago the author taught the history of India to the higher classes of native students in the Madras Presidency College; and since then he has had large experiences of political affairs in the Secretariats both of India and British' Burma. Consequently he is not only aware of what the rising generation of Hindus are anxious to be taught, but what it is desirable that they should know; whilst he has enjoyed special opportunities of acquiring the necessary knowledge, beyond what is available in libraries or record rooms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the graphic novel and its growth in the library helps librarians utilize and develop this extraordinarily popular format in their library collections. What does the surge of popularity in graphic novels mean for libraries? Graphic Novels Beyond the Basics: Insights and Issues for Libraries goes deeper into this subject than any other volume previously published, bringing together a distinguished panel of experts to examine questions librarians may encounter as they work to enhance their graphic novel holdings. Graphic Novels Beyond the Basics begins by introducing librarians to the world of the graphic novel: popular and critically acclaimed fiction and nonfiction titles; a wide range of genres including Japanese manga and other international favorites; recurring story and character archetypes; and titles created for specific cultural audiences and female readers. The book then offers a series of chapters on key issues librarians will face with graphic novels on the shelves, including processing and retention questions, preservation and retention, collecting related media such as Japanese anime films and video games, potential grounds for patron or parental complaints, the future of graphic novels, and more.

Book excerpt: This new inter-disciplinary book is the first comparative, case-based analysis of media panoply in (and out of) Asia today. Examining what the authors call the "media/tion equation", the contributors demonstrate the multiple links between media, society and culture, and advance the claim that media is the key means through which Asians experience, understand, effect and are affected by the worlds containing them. Exploring a relatively neglected principle in cultural studies - that context counts - medi@sia highlights how the experiences of those encountering media messages differ depending on social, economic, politial and ideational conditions. Balancing social, cultural and media theory with empirical research, the essays in this collection provide a better understanding of the complex relationship between media and people’s practices, values and behaviour in contemporary Asia.
